The "afterparty" is rumored to be the real main event of the night. A black-tie affair in the lavish, opulent ballroom, it is every new Knight's chance to mingle and meet some of their new brothers in arms. Of course, a couple hours are provided following the ceremony for everyone to change, do hair and makeup, and choose from the vast array of formal attire in the closets of the balcony "dressing rooms" located at the top of spiraled staircases on either side of the ballroom. A separate dressing room exists for men and women, and they include full bathrooms (with, thankfully, very modern plumbing).

The squires are usually among the last to arrive, and the ballroom is full to the brim with a fancy array of people, of all shapes, sizes and species.

Hope none of you are shy. They're all here to meet you.

[rationalizes]

[Annnd Gar finds her way over, looking nice in a practically long sleeved black dress. She doesn't have a glass in hand, but she steps forward hesitantly drawing her arms out as if to give the other woman a hug without really knowing how she'll receive it, since they're still practically strangers. She can always change it into an awkward shoulder clasp at the last minute if Martha doesn't look into the hug thing.]

You did marvelously back there. I was thoroughly impressed!

[aproperdoctor]

[Martha is totally cool with hugs! She's even good at making sure she doesn't accidentally dump her wine down the back of Gar's dress while she hugs her, because that would be bad. She blushes demurely at the praise, shaking her head to dismiss it.]

It was nothing, really. Reminded me of my graduation from med school more than anything else, though, I have to say, the dean of the school wasn't half as intimidating as Wynn is. [Martha grins a little at this admission.] Mind, I don't think anybody is as intimidating as he is. At least, nobody I've ever met.

[rationalizes]

[Yay! Now she feels less socially awkward, at least.] Yes, well, he does have a certain ... presence to him that's quite remarkable. [She chuckles, then glances around as if to make sure he's not like... listening somehow from across the room o__o]

But I suppose one would require that sort of charisma, to lead such a vast organization as ours.

[aproperdoctor]

[MARTHA WOULDN'T PUT IT PAST HIM TO EAVESDROP.] I would call it scary, actually. But whatever works for him.

[pause] So, uh, should I call you Sir Gar, or Jeanne, or...I dunno, what d'you prefer?

[rationalizes]

Well... perhaps a bit. [She gives a guilty little smile, glancing over her shoulder again and chuckling quietly] Though you didn't just hear me say that.

[She smiles widely at the question] Oh, I don't mind, but--

[shootfirst]

[And she's suddenly clapped on the back hard by this petite blonde girl, who's smirking, and it causes her to jump]

But Gar's just so much snappier!

[aproperdoctor]

{AHHH SUDDEN LITTLE BLONDE LADY ATTACK. Martha blinks in surprise, nearly dropping her wineglass.]

Er, hello there. [She offers the newcomer a hand politely] I'm Martha.

[shootfirst]

[Kat smiles widely at that, shooting Gar a smug glance] I know. You're sort of celebrity of the week for your squiring party. It's a thing.

[She takes Martha's hand and gives it a very masculine pump] Kat Samcelot. And stick with Kat.

[aproperdoctor]

Well, there's seven of us - I wouldn't really expect everybody to remember all our names. I know I certainly don't, as terrible as that is.

What do you specialise in, Kat?

[shootfirst]

Mage-in-training. [She lifts her chin proudly] I'm really into potions, which not everybody is, that's sort of how I got into the whole witchcrafting world in the first place.

Plus, I have some mean hacker-fu when I need it.

[rationalizes]

Kat was my previous squire. She's a member of the Dragon's Fire - our sort of catch-all for those who practice arcane arts.

[aproperdoctor]

A regular Snape, are you? Though, you know, obviously better looking and not a dick- sorry, you probably don't have Harry Potter here, do you? I mean, if you've got mages and everything anyway, there's not really any reason to have a book about a kid at wizarding school.

[Oh, crap, she's blathering nervously again.]

[Gar laughs at that, shaking her head] Of course we have Harry Potter. Young mages need something to read too, that they can identify with.

[shootfirst]

[Kat in the meantime, looks slightly confused] Why wouldn't we have Harry Potter in England? I mean, it kind of came from here. [Even though she's the... only American one in this conversation]

[aproperdoctor]

[Well, now Martha feels extra-dumb. LOOK IT MADE SENSE IN HER HEAD, OKAY.]

Magic doesn't really work like that, though, does it? I mean, I couldn't unlock a door by waving a wand and going 'Alohomora', right?

You know, never mind that I'm not a mage.

[shootfirst]

No, that's part of it, we just don't use wands. It's called a knock spell, and it does need a verbal component.

[Thoughtfully] I should have totally based all my verbals off Harry Potter spells.

[aproperdoctor]

[okay now she's going to ask a really stupid question BRACE YOURSELVES]

But Voldemort - definitely not real, right?

[Real concern winds its way across Kat's face] I sure as hell hope not. I never really thought about that.

[rationalizes]

[Trying not to roll her eyes] Definitely not real.

[aproperdoctor]

This is the bit where you tell me that even though Voldemort and, I dunno, Darth Vader aren't real, there are plenty of magic users out there who use their powers for bad and nasty things, and that's what the Knights are here to defend against, right?

[rationalizes]

Well, I'm not certain about... Darth Vader precisely, but ... but yes, in a manner of speaking. [Gar smiles a bit at the explanation]

[aproperdoctor]

The Force is sort of like magic, and, you know, light side, dark side, and all that. Besides, for all I know, magic users could have midichlorians. [She looks at Kat for confirmation. BACK HER NERDINESS UP OKAY.]

[shootfirst]

[Kat seems to find this a fantastic comparison, eye lighting right up] Actually, Gar, that sounds a lot like that whole 'eldritch energy' field thing you were talking about everyone having. She's totally got a point.

[aproperdoctor]

[Martha grins a little.] So you're really just like Jedi, only minus the lightsabres. Which is a bit sad, really, because I might have to make an exception for one of those.

You know, if we asked them to, I bet our tech department could totally come up with a way to actually build lightsabers.
