The "afterparty" is rumored to be the real main event of the night. A black-tie affair in the lavish, opulent ballroom, it is every new Knight's chance to mingle and meet some of their new brothers in arms. Of course, a couple hours are provided following the ceremony for everyone to change, do hair and makeup, and choose from the vast array of formal attire in the closets of the balcony "dressing rooms" located at the top of spiraled staircases on either side of the ballroom. A separate dressing room exists for men and women, and they include full bathrooms (with, thankfully, very modern plumbing).

The squires are usually among the last to arrive, and the ballroom is full to the brim with a fancy array of people, of all shapes, sizes and species.

Hope none of you are shy. They're all here to meet you.

[Well Tia's also scored a nat 20 looking-hot check, so you two can start a club. She's done all up in a beautiful purple dress, and doesn't seem to care that she ... really doesn't have anyone to impress. Whatever, she will enjoy her wine and give no fucks, like a boss]

I heard you also scored a squire out of this.

[Francesca definitely knows who Tia is, but they haven't really talked much. But, as Tia has most likely experienced many times before, Francesca had known her father fairly well.

The best part about being a part of such a large yet devoted organization is that every member has something in common to talk about. Tia seemed to realize this and Francesca was grateful. She could talk with her co-workers about work all day. It was the other stuff that was potentially awkward.]

I did, yes. Ethan Mavery. Which squire belongs to you?

[With sly humor:] Well, I don't think she's been branded yet, but Andrea Dodge. [Tia figures that Francesca, as an older knight, will likely pick up on the significance of the last name. Andie's mother, head of the Dragon's Hoard before Lis'sa took the title, had gone out in a rather terrible lab accident right here in the castle, after all.] You?

[The name Dodge is very familiar to her, as well as the tragedy surrounding it, but she wasn't going to rudely bring that up in this public setting.] Honestly, it's been quite a while since I've had a squire. I'm just hoping I don't bore him to death. [She gives Tia a friendly smile]

He's a man. You could always just let him do all the talking and he'll probably be perfectly happy. [jk jk]

[And Francesca laughs. Like... honestly laughs. It's not even that the comment was so funny. Maybe it was just because it was coming from Tia and she said it like that. You have a very good point, Sir Ellison.

From the way he's prancing around here, I think he might be exactly that type. [She sighs]

[Tia snorts at that, but then holds up a hand] Tia. Please. Sir Ellison was my father, as everyone loves to remind me.

Of course. Tia. [She says her name with emphasis and a smile. And the connotation that she won't make the mistake again. Sorry Tia...

Francesca takes a sip of her drink and she scans the room.]

So you're not nervous about having a squire? [Just trying to make some friendly conversation.]

[It hardly looks like she's about to hold a grudge over it, and she gives a half smile at the question] Who said that?

It'll be a... new experience, but when Wynn asked me and I knew the circumstances, I couldn't really say no.

He does make it sound like quite the honor. [She smiles to herself.] Hopefully it will be.

Well, worst case scenario, it should make for some interesting stories to tell years down the road.

[Wow. Tia's the most laid-back person she's talked to... well at least tonight, that's for sure. How relaxing.

Francesca raises her glass to her lips, taking the woman's advice.]

[Save the drama for yo' momma. She downs some of hers as well, and then looks at Francesca askance.]

So do you still remember yours? [She gestures at the ballroom floor] Was it a lot like this, even back then?

[Francesca laughs lightly.] It was exactly like this. I think the food's gotten better though.

It's funny that every time I come to one of these there's an overwhelming sense of nostalgia. I guess that's why I come. [She brings her drink up to her lips, but pauses.] I made a fool out of myself at mine though. Nothing too terrible, in retrospect, but troubling at the time for sure.

[Drinking sure does make one chatty.]

You plus social faux pas. Hard to imagine. [She smirks sympathetically though.] Guess we all have our moments.

Unfortunately. [She doesn't look too upset about it though.]

It helps to remember that feeling though, especially now. I'm trying to keep in mind that he must be more nervous than I am. Or at least he should be. [She takes a drink] At least I know what I'm getting myself into.

I was probably one of the most sullen squires Wynn had ever seen. I wouldn't really call it nerves, just... annoyance. [She smirks] It was the last place I wanted to be.

[She just glances at Tia out of the corner of her eye.] That seems understandable.

What made you actually decide to join, if you didn't really want to be here?

Because I realized the hard way that I really wasn't built to do anything else.

[A smile slowly stretches across Francesca's face as she listens to Tia's response.] Isn't that how it always goes? At least for us Knights.

Some people perceive it as an option for those who don't have many others, but really it's our only option because no other vocation or profession could offer us what we find here. [She keeps her gaze steady on the party in front of her as she speaks.]

Plus, you can only live this life of pompous grandeur and exciting adventures for so long before it starts to rub off on you. And then you're a little too weird to fit in well outside these walls. [She says her last comment lightly, but means every word of it.]

Not to mention when you grow up around it. [She might sound rueful, but it's said with good humor too.]

I think I was more or less afraid of just failing the legacy, instead of fearing that I'd end up losing who I was.

[Francesca analyzes what Tia says for a moment. She's never known the glory or the burden of upholding a legacy, but she can only imagine the turmoil it could cause.] Well, I must say, I've heard good things about your work. And with all these new squires coming in, you'll have plenty of opportunity to make a name for yourself.

[Small consolation:] Could be worse. You could be Fred, Jr. [Take that as you will.]

... God save us all from such a fate.

[She smiles a little, though] I'm not really interested in making a name. I suppose that's the difference.

[Francesca just nods her understanding.]

What are you interested in accomplishing then, if you don't mind me asking? [Just genuine curiosity. Francesca doesn't meet many Knights who aren't out for some kind of glory. But she isn't it in for that. And it's kind of nice to meet someone new who isn't either.]
