[ The castle can be a happening place, even on more mundane days. This log is for random interactions over the course of this month.  Because not everyone is into parties, ok.

[ it hasn't gotten any better.

the sword that feels as though it's meant for her is mangled and shattered and useless, and in its place, she has something that sends tendrils of dread through her like a poison to use. the crystal sword has a heavily decorated hilt, and that's precisely all anyone will be seeing for now, thank you very much. she'd rather it stayed right in its sheath where it was.

she's tried, periodically, to take it out and make use of it, but the damned thing is - well, damned. the evil comes off it in waves, she doesn't need extensive magic training to feel that. she's quite certain that she's lucky not to be dead just from touching it - and were someone without magic to try the same, she can't say she believes they'd share that luck.

so, she does the practical thing and takes advantage of her connection with the knights now that she's spent enough time among them to grow familiar, to make something of a home amongst these people and deem them trustworthy. she brings it to the library, laying the sheath out on the table in front of where she finds belle working. ]

If I wanted to learn more about where this came from, where would I start?

[ entirely absorbed in leafing through the pages of a tome on gnomish inventions, belle starts a bit at the sound of the sword clattering on the table in front of her, looking up with widened eyes before realizing it's... just a person. a very intense looking person. wanting some librarian assistance.

she politely pushes the book aside, keeping it open to the place where she was last, and runs her eyes along the sheath, as she says with a hint of uncertainty: ] To discover a sword's history? Er, I imagine that might depend on where you received it.

The other side of the Veil. Surely there are some books to come through as the rest of us have. [ but the uncertain strain in her expression says it's not really a surely so much as a hopefully, because the familiarity of it that she can't place is maddening. ] The sword's ... magical - probably cursed - someone must've written on it.

If it's cursed, I would imagine Wynn would like to know about it. But it's possible that there could be some recording of it somewhere, yes. Does it have a name?

[trebond]

If it does, I don't know it. [ she shakes her head, looking grim. apologetically, she adds; ] I know I'm not providing much in the way of information, but that's why I'm here.

There are tomes full of recorded artifacts, often with drawings that might help... But what leads you to believe it's cursed?

[trebond]

I can feel it when I hold it. [ she settles down into a seat across from belle rather than stand over the table dramatically. ] The blade has its own magic, it has this ... this pull. Like it tries to control me when I use it. If it weren't for my own magic, I'm sure I wouldn't even be safe touching it. [ she doesn't touch it, but her gaze lowers down to the blade, and she concentrates on it, trying to recall the feeling. ]

Tries to control you to do ... what?

I know it sounds insane, but ... to keep attacking. To fight harder, more violently, beyond the point of incapacitating someone and into - well, into bloodlust.

[ belle's breath hitches just a little ] Dark magic. It almost sounds possessed with a ... berserker spirit.

[trebond]

Possessed? [ alanna's discontent only grows. she straightens up. ] Can that even be fixed? A spirit in a sword?

[untethered]

Maybe... maybe some kind of exorcism? It probably depends on the nature of the spirit and how it's bound.

It doesn't... speak to you, does it?

[trebond]

Not words, no. It's more like - like a feeling.

[untethered]

Perhaps that's safer. [ or perhaps not at all. feelings can trump words, sometimes. ] Either way, I'll see what I might uncover. You may do well to have a member of the Dragon's Fire detect what sort of magic it possesses, as well.

[trebond]

More magic to suss out the magic problem. Splendid. [ she doesn't hide the sour look, but she does grab the sword off the table and stand. ] I'll track one of them down. Thank you.

[ belle pipes up with: ] Have you met Sir Gold? He might be able to help. [ oh right, that was probably presumptuous. whatever. ] You can mention I sent you.

[trebond]

Gold? I haven't. The Fire, right?

[untethered]

[ a nod ] He's rather powerful, from what I've seen.

[trebond]

[ it's supposed to make her feel better, she realizes, but alanna's tense expression makes it clear that it doesn't, despite the fact that she says nothing. powerful sorcerers, in her book, have never been the sort of people she particularly wants to spend time around. even thom has grown scarier the more power he's attained - his letters, before she'd come here, had begun to worry her. she can't help but think on where he is now, and if that power had consumed him the way it had duke roger. ]

I'll see if I can find him.

I'll keep looking and see what I can find in the meantime.
