Yes, yes, that is quite a litany of failures, isn't it? [He waves a hand dismissively.] Now allow me to put a more positive spin on it. The Zataras have closure now about their missing loved one. Sindella is no longer suffering. Those people who are under that spell? Well, they've been returned home to their families- quite the happy ending for them. And now we have the potential for an alliance with the most powerful magic-users in all the world through our affiliation with Lady Amara.

[He shrugs.] Not every mission ends sweetly, Ms. Swan. We take what victories we can.

It's that alliance I'm worried about.

[ and judging by that accompanied suspicious look, gold's access to that alliance. what he could do with that very, very powerful magic is not a good thing. not remotely. he may not have his memories of being rumpelstiltskin, but gold himself had always been enough to scare the townspeople without magic or memories. ]

I guess you could say I'm just not really sure who this one's a victory for.

The Dragon's Fire, mostly. And the Hoard, to some extent. I'm certain Wynn feels comfortable knowing he has more allies than another set of powerful enemies, but it all comes down to pragmatism in the end.

You know, it's funny, I got this impression that knights were supposed to give their squires all of their options for sects in this organization. Not ... doggedly harass them about one after they've already said no.

We're also supposed to encourage our squires to challenge themselves and pursue their best possible path. Do you think you'd suit the Hoard? The Tongue? You might do well in the Dragon's Hide, but something tells me you're not simply about brute strength. You're clever, Ms. Swan, but you accept that aiming a gun and firing is simple. You choose that because it's familiar, comforting, but it's never going to bind you to the Knights or give you your own niche here. You might as well be back in Storybrooke.

[He got a nat 20 on that Diplomacy check. holy fuck.]

He holds up his hand apologetically.] Sorry, but, uh... Your diplomacy skills are sadly lacking. Though I must admit the gun can be quite convincing sometimes. It doesn't work for every occasion.

[He shakes his head.] I just feel like magic is your calling somehow. You remember more than I do- I'm sure you can figure out why.

There are far worse people you could be learning magic from, I assure you.

But he can't be honest about that much, so he'll be honest about the reason he sought it out to begin with.]

Because I didn't feel connected to this world until I discovered I had the talent for it. It made everything else about being trapped here seem so inconsequential in comparison. Some people can adapt to this place as easily as anything, but others... They struggle. And I would think that you would have the same problems, being here, away from everything you've ever known, desperate for something to give you a reason to stay. At least this way, you'll always have a piece of this world that belongs entirely to you.

Not entirely. The hardest part is getting started. And I'm just curious if you're as stubborn with anyone else as you are with me. Once you actually start, everything else comes easier and that's when the true lessons begin.
