Everybody loves a media circus and the trial of Rafael Giovanni is no exception. If he was famous before, in the days following the shooting, now he's all people are talking about, and all the tabloids want to focus on. The complications presented at some of the early hearings by Jaka, regarding the identity of the Black Scourge and Rafael's alleged reaction have only made the story more appealing to the millions watching.

They've also caused the trial to drag out for months as facts are checked, evidence is poured over, and the jury becomes only more split on the issue. In the meantime, the holidays fly by, and one of the most terrible winters in years blankets Chicago in blizzards.

This log covers any work and non-work related shenanigans the Knights have while staying in Chicago, immediately following the last log and continuing for the next couple months. This will be the Knight's last time in Chicago before the trial: after which they plan to return to the castle to fully Knight Violet and Elena and decide where to head next.

[ vi runs into elena in the kitchen. because occasionally she remembers food is her best friend. or occasionally she can't remember when the last time she ate was and since that seems... bad, she ventures off into the kitchen.

and lo and behold, one day she finds an elena. ] Hey, Awesomesauce. [ she even manages a smile but it's weak and exhausted. ]

[She gives her friend a smile over her shoulder as she finishes pouring milk over a bowl of cereal.]

You okay?

Yeah, I'm... [ she doesn't have the energy to lie. ] Yeah.

[ that's... you know, close to the truth. haha no it's not. ] How's your lessons going?

[Elena just gives her a sympathetic smile.]

Well, if you ever want to talk about it, you know you can, right?

[But she's not going to make her. Just let her know that she's here.]

Fine. If we needed to up and leave tomorrow, it would be...okay. So, that's something.

[She knows the basics, though she's sure she could learn more.]

Yeah, I'm not real good at the feelings part of talking. But thanks. [ srsly, how are you still so sweet after all this, elena? WHAT IS YOUR SECRET, BB??? ]

So can you do the whole face switcheroo thing? Can we do it? 'cause I personally would be highly amused in seeing if anyone could figure out who is who. [ nope, not thinking about using elena's awesome new power to reenact the parent trap. why would you think such a thing? ]

[Because sometimes dealing with other people's problems is easier than your own. And right now, her problems are also minuscule compared to others, and you all were there for her when she went through her own crisis.

[ vi doesn't even hesitate, just shoves her hand in elena's. she looks kind of excited, in fact. ]

[Because she's new at this, and it takes a little while, and it hurts, and Vi will probably be able to...see her bones moving and her shape changing. Elena doesn't break eye contact the whole time though, because copying an image is easier when you look at it, but touching her helps too.

Holy shit. [ she stares at elena in a kind of delighted fascination. ] Jesus, I'm really pretty. And I should definitely eat a sandwich...

[ ...idk what anyone expects from her, but she thinks this is super cool. ]

[She gives her a bright smile.] Of course you are. Anyone with eyes could see that. [She chuckles.] I don't think food is the first thing on anyone's mind lately, but I don't think one could hurt.

[Funny how it was easy to look at the good things about yourself when looking from a third person perspective.]

Oh man, this is literally the coolest. [ SHOCK AND AWE, SHOCK AND AWE. ] You have my tattoo and everything. Do you have my scar? [ because even with all the time they've spent together, not many people have seen it. so she yanks her tee shirt up to display the scar curving like a c across her torso from her hip to just under her bra. ] 'cause I think that would be the only telling feature.

[She chuckles, clearly pleased that she thinks this is so neat. Elena is starting to think it's a lot cooler than she did when she first found out about it too, and enjoys the idea of it beyond it's usefulness.

She watches her expose her abdomen, and Elena does the same. And no, in fact, there is no scar there.]

I'm supposed to read people's minds so I don't miss things like that.

[She looks a little sheepish.]

Well, I don't think about it so... learning curve? [ she doesn't want elena to feel like she's not doing amazingly, after all. ]

Yep, one thing at a time. In most cases, no one's going to look at things that closely. Not at first, anyway.

[She doesn't feel bad. After all, she knows she's come a long way.]

Maybe, though I think they're probably a little more used to it.

[She leans toward her conspiratorially.]

I wanna say Myri but... she'd know, like in a heartbeat. [ she pinches her bottom lip together between her fingers, thinking. ] Maybe Finnick or Luthir. Or Kat. [ her hand falls a little and her lips twist up into a smirk. ] Kat, definitely Kat.

[Her mouth breaks into a wide smile.]

Perfect.

[Because Kat is always good for a reaction, and she won't take it too seriously.]

[ she grins right back, but reaches out to take elena's face between her hands. because as much as she's looking in a mirror, she's never stopped knowing it's elena in there. ] You know you're incredibly special, right? This is amazing, you're amazing, as self-obsessed as that sounds since I'm pretty much telling myself, but you are. You're hella amazeballs. Don't ever forget that, okay? This is a gift and it's beautiful. And if anyone says differently, you send them to me. I could use the target practice.

[Her expression softens, and she can feel the sting of tears behind her eyes. Dealing with learning about all of this has been hard for her, though she's tried to hide it as much as she can, with so much other stuff going on.

And she's only heard this from two people in their group, and she knows that not everyone has approved of what she's doing, so it's...really nice to hear.

She wraps her arms around Vi's neck and gives her a tight hug, which is something she hasn't had in a long time.]

[ oh. oh if vi knew this was the reaction elena was going to give her she would have said that long before. her arms immediately go around the younger woman, one hand reaching up to smooth down messy, wavy curls she knows are impossible to tame the frizz out of. ]

You're welcome, sweetie. I mean it. What you can do is incredible and you should be proud of it.

[There's a reason her bluff mod is so high, okay. She doesn't burden people with her issues and feelings, and most people tend...not to notice that she's hiding anything.]

I am. I just...keep waiting for everyone to stop trusting me.

[She's worried about going back to the castle, mostly. Because those people don't know her like these ones do. And if things are falling apart here?]

If they don't trust you it's because they don't deserve your trust. [ she pulls back a little to look elena in the eyes. ] What you are doesn't change who you are. It might take some people a little bit to accept it, but if they can accept you then they can accept this. [ a beat. ] And if they don't? Fuck them. Which I know is easier to say than to do, but seriously, fuck them.

I think I just feel like that because we've been gone for so long.

[And not everyone knows who she is. But they'll know what, she can guess. Things like that spread quickly.

She takes a breath and nods, making herself smile.]

[ she darts in quick to kiss her on the cheek. ] On the upsides, if people are dicks, I get more Elena time. So...
