Everybody loves a media circus and the trial of Rafael Giovanni is no exception. If he was famous before, in the days following the shooting, now he's all people are talking about, and all the tabloids want to focus on. The complications presented at some of the early hearings by Jaka, regarding the identity of the Black Scourge and Rafael's alleged reaction have only made the story more appealing to the millions watching.

They've also caused the trial to drag out for months as facts are checked, evidence is poured over, and the jury becomes only more split on the issue. In the meantime, the holidays fly by, and one of the most terrible winters in years blankets Chicago in blizzards.

This log covers any work and non-work related shenanigans the Knights have while staying in Chicago, immediately following the last log and continuing for the next couple months. This will be the Knight's last time in Chicago before the trial: after which they plan to return to the castle to fully Knight Violet and Elena and decide where to head next.

[ when violet wanders out into the kitchen, gar would be on the phone at the table, completely and utterly oblivious to the existence of anyone else in the entire world apparently as she doesn't hear or see her enter. for the first time in what seems like months, vi would actually see a smile on the woman's face, a warm, soft, real smile that seems to melt the worry lines off her forehead for once. she gives a small gasp, of amused delight and then says: ] You can't be serious, he wouldn't-- or, well, I suppose there's not much he wouldn't do, is there?

I'm glad the two of you are finding some moments of levity in the midst of... everything. I wish I could say we had more of that ourselves...

[ vi tries, and succeeds quite well, to be quiet as to not interrupt as she pours herself a bowl of cereal. (move silently 29) she's eavesdropping, of course, but she can't help it! gar is smiling, she wants to know who is making her.

of course, being focused on gar's conversation means she's not focused on pouring milk and she ends up pouring a bunch on the counter instead of her bowl. (dex 5) the realization comes with a yelp. ] Oh fuckballs.

[ oh my god, GAR STILL DOESN'T KNOW. she's rolled a 2 twice in a row, jsyk. ] Just promise me that you'll be careful Ja-- Sir Chessing. Who knows what the ramifications of what happened on that boat might be. I-- We're all very worried for you both. [ a beat ] I will. I feel much better, yes, you don't know how much I appreciate it.

[ damn gar, why aren't you in scotland with all the deaf people? oh well, vi hastily tries to clean up her mess with as little noise possible while still rudely eavesdropping and since she doesn't drop anything else, she is a success! a million points for her. scooping up her bowl, she turns and leans against the counter to watch gar.

no, she is not even being subtle about listening.

sir chessing, eh? so gar's on the phone with a dragon's claw. hmmm. and somewhere, someone, possibly t-pain, is on a boat. cue vi daydreaming about the dragon's claws and t-pain in tuxes on a boat drinking santana champ 'cause it's so crisp. with their swim trunks and their flippy floppies, flipping burgers while -- whoa, there vi. chillax. ]

[ it's at that moment that gar glances casually over her shoulder and her eyes get huge as she stares right at vi (suddenly NAT 20). her mouth flops open. ] Er, I-- should probably-- let you get back to work, yes, er thank you again, Jack. [ the words come out in a rush, her cheeks pink, as she turns away. ] Stay in touch. [ and with that she hangs up ]

I-- didn't see you there.

[ om nom nom, casually eating her cheerios. she shrugs a little, but she doesn't look especially apologetic. ]

Yep. I spilled some milk. [ she tosses her hair over her shoulder to indicated the sodden dishcloth. and the milk dripping off the counter. she isn't the best at cleaning up. ] You look... relaxed.

Well, it's always a comfort to be reminded that the Dragon's Claws are working on our behalf.

Mhmm. Though it does shove a load of gravitas into the situation. [ a beat. ] Which I guess is already sort of mucho de gravitas even without that...

Exactly, which is why I'd rather have the big guns involved than not.

So they went on a cruise? [ boat = cruise. shhhh. ] Doesn't sound very big gunny, unless, of course, there is some gossip you are not supplying me with.

Sir Bancroft infiltrated a supply ship being sent to Andres - full of ex-Slovechnian slaves that were supposed to be on their way out of the country.

[ daaaaaaamn. ] People... as supplies. That's disgusting.

[ gar nods, sadly ] He believes they were intended to be used in experiments similar to those we discovered in various laboratories scattered across America - hideous grafting procedures intended to create creatures who could withstand the use of their behavioral chips.

[ she makes a face like she is going to be sick, her poor delicate sensibilities, and sets her cereal down on the counter. ] Oh. [ it takes her a second to not want to hurl. (fort save 16) ] I'm still not really sure what the point of those chips are, couldn't they just... hire people with no morals to do their dirty work?

It might be more logical to us, but these men and women fear the autonomy of non-humans, consider it a ... a threat. They don't want them eliminated, so much as subjugated. They consider them... useful. And inferior.

Useful and inferior. [ she nods a little. ] So it sounds like they have the same mentality as my nighttime stalker. So, can we not call them men and women and just use scum? 'cause I'm not really sure they deserve to be called anything else.

I'm certainly not opposed to the moniker. That's why it's so important that we put a stop to them - but so difficult, given the prevalence of the attitude.

And I guess just wiping them out would be... frowned up, yes? That would be rude.

Sir Bancroft seemed to share your philosophy. He thought it was better to take some of them out before they could do any more harm to people, but...

Wholesale murder doesn't quite sit right with our aims, either. It might seem more satisfying, but what we need to do is discover how to root out their resources, and research and destroy those, so that someone else can't simply pick up where they left off.

[ tbh vi's solution to everything lately has been "kill them all". she only has so much compassion in the winter months and all of that is spent on her family, she has none to spare for anything else. ]

How can you even fight something like that though? It's not a monster, it's an ideology. You can take out Hilter, but neo-Nazis still exist.

That doesn't mean we can't try. Or shouldn't.

It just seems like it's a losing battle. Not that we shouldn't keep at it, it's just-- [ she shrugs. ] When the bad guys win, that's it, they win. When we win, we still have to keep fighting. It's not fair.

Yes, but if we can save anyone from falling prey to them, it's worth the constancy of the battle, I think.

[ it's just so exhausting. she picks up her cereal again and stirs it absently. ] Anyway, I should get back to... [ nothing. ] Sorry for interrupting your call.

Oh, you certainly weren't interrupting anything. [ she blushes slightly, looking down ] Don't worry about it at all.
