[Kate's downtime in the castle lately has mostly focused on keeping moving. Training sessions for both hand to hand and weapons that aren't guns, keeping up in the shooting range, or just wandering around the grounds so that she can get to know it better. Things happening in the castle itself have pushed her to want to know all of her exits, all of her places for cover, anything that might prove to be helpful later.

The fact that they were infiltrated is not a comforting one. The fact that that person was released by one of their own is not much better. She's met Elena, she didn't think she was the type, but she also doesn't know the situation, so she's trying not to judge - either Elena, or her own ability to read people, though she's questioning the second a little harder. She's mostly trying to be prepared.

She was probably a girl scout.

She doesn't really remember.]

[ abigail is in the training room, but this time she's not practicing with her rifle. settled at a punching bag in the corner, away from people, she's determinedly punching it. her form is awful though and while she's not hurting herself, she definitely doesn't know that she's not supposed to telegraph her punch or how to put her hips behind it for more power and the wikihow article she has open on her phone and propped up on the bench next to her is not helping her much. help her, obi-wan kate-nobi. you're her only hope. ]

[Kate pauses, hanging back for a moment and watching her form from a distance and eventually she just takes a few steps forward.]

You're telegraphing with your shoulder. Makes it easier to see it coming.

[she holds up her hands before taking another step closer.]

May I?

Sure. [ her head bobs in a nod and she steps back to give kate some room. she was nice at abigail's squiring party. ] I've never done anything like this before. The Internet only gets you so far.

[she nods, before moving to step in front of the bag as she does.]

Right now, you're throwing from your shoulders. You want to throw from your hips. That way, you're putting a little more force behind it and it's harder for them to tell where the punch is coming from.

[She throws a few light punches, moving slowly so that Abigail can see what she's doing (attack 9).]

You're not just fighting with your arms, you're fighting with your whole body.

[ she doesn't really understand completely, but enough that her body moves slightly to mimic kate's movements as she watches. ] But my arm is... connected to my shoulder. [ aka what does her hips have to do with it? ]

Yes, but ...

[Sometimes it's easier if they do it themselves. She takes a step back and gestures for Abigail to stand in front of the bag. Kate will stand behind her and try to direct her if she can.]

Throw a right hook.

Okay. [ abigail lines up in front of the bag and tries to do what kate did, using her whole body to power the punch. she does not... do very well. (atk 5) a rough exhale is all the disappointment she displays, though. ]

Okay, right now, you're throwing from here.

[She places her hands on her shoulders gently, and turns her slightly with the movement.]

You want to plant your feet, and throw from here.

[she moves her hands down to her hips, making the same turning gesture so that she gets a feel for it.]

Instead of turning your shoulder out, you'll just be punching forward.

Okay. [ that actually makes more sense and is easier for her to make sence of. taking a deep breath, she curls her hand into a fist and tries again, this time doing starlingly well. (atk 18) ] Oh!

[Kate grins a bit as she takes a step back from her, giving her room to try again unaided.]

See? It'll make it a lot easier.

[ she throws a few more punches (atk 16, 12, 18) before turning to look back at kate with a smile. ] Thank you.

Of course. A punch like that could save your life in the field. You want to be sure you're doing it right.

[ kate's already dressed and warmed up for some hand to hand training, when syd wanders into the training room. ] Looking for a partner?

[Kate glances up at her mentor and smiles before nodding.]

Yeah, actually. You offering?

I could definitely use it. Carpenter won't come near me these days.

[killmypatience]

[Her eyebrows raise.]

Too worried about getting his ass kicked?

Never let it be said he doesn't learn from experience.

At least there's that.

[she glances around at the options available.]

Hand to hand?

Unless you have a weapon you wanted to practice with.

[She shakes her head.]

Hand to hand works for me.

They keep pushing me to learn as many of these weapons as I can, and while I can understand why it's useful, it still feels a little strange to me, trying to train with an ancient morningstar.

[She nods a bit in return.]

I will always prefer a gun in my hands. But I also know that sometimes you need to get a little unconventional.
