[ The castle can be a happening place, even on more mundane days. This log is for random interactions over the course of this month.

You are encouraged to start your own threads and tag around, and feel free to threadjack into any on-going threads that aren't specified as 'closed' in the subject lines since people can enter into rooms even in the middle of what's going on. You can also specify 'single thread', meaning you want only one response for all participants, rather than multi-thread, where a number of different scenes/threads can be done as replies to the top prompt. ]

[ All squires have to do their time assigned to desk duty once in awhile. They're required to monitor activity at the front gate, have guests sign in to a large, ancient looking yellowing tome, direct inquiries, disperse and record keys to company vehicles, etc. This job seen as a test of patience and responsibility. The job also entails fielding any phone calls made to the "Karthur Institute", the Knights' cover organization, and doing their best to discourage questioning (by putting people on hold eternally, accidentally hanging on them when transferring their call, answering questions as vaguely as possible, etc. etc.). Shifts at "the desk" are scheduled in eight hour blocks. Food is brought out to the desk by the kitchen staff.

Feel free to rp out your time on desk duty here... you never know who might show up. ]

tia ellison, head of the dragon's mind, doesn't have her own office here. ]

[ just outside the Dragon's Hide wing on the second floor of the castle there's an impressively well-stocked tavern, decorated in Faerunian fashion. it's dark and smokey inside, with heavy curtains covering the windows and only candlelight on the tables. a large bar is off to the left, and there are several older-looking Knights solemnly nursing their pints of ale: sir lanston, the gruff older knight who wears his full plate everywhere and is hardly ever seen in the castle, sir dovan ironsides, the jovial dwarf who heads the dragon's hide, sir zero, the ill-groomed technomage, and sir christos la krail, one of the castle's only drow, who wears his black hooded cloak almost all of the time. the four of them appear well accustomed to sitting in their current arrangement, and the only one of them who cracks any smiles is dovan, as they drink down their alcohol and share stories. ]

[He's not overly enthused about the crowd here, but the decorum of this place reminds him of his favorite watering hole back in the Dales - so he walks past some of the newer-styled bars, before walking into this old pub, and sauntering up to order a whiskey and cola.]

[He doesn't seem to mind most of the company, though he notably sits at the opposite end of the room from the Drow]

[ the knights library is an extensive location, complete with information on all kinds of fields of arcane research, monsters, and lands beyond the veil. specialty rooms exist with hundreds of books on a specific topic: one of which is dragons of all kinds.

if you'd like to come browse the stacks, look for information on a certain topic, or learn a little more about the world you've found yourself in, this is the place to do it.

it's also a very relaxing place to find a corner and curl up. ]

[ none of them so much as acknowledge his entrance, but he can overhear their conversation now. and it doesn't sound like they're swapping stories after all.

the dwarf slams his mug against the wooden table and splashes beer onto it. the drow frowns and picks up the pack of cloves he had lying there, removing one and lighting it, filling the room with a spicy, sweet smell. ] --our day we never would've stood for it. I'll never understand what's holding Wynn's hand on this one. Andres has always been a friend of the Knights! Why, I remember serving the King over a hundred years ago when he needed our arms.

If he doesn't do something soon, someone will. And we'll wind up with another damn Slovechnia on our hands. Ask me, I'd rather prevent the mess in the first place than dealing with cleaning it up after the fact.

Wynn'll move when he's good and ready. It's your job to be prepared when the day comes, not to get ideas in your head before orders come down.

[ the dark elf finishes a drag and says flatly: ] Let's not forget, gentlemen, that restructuring governments is a game for fools and idealists. The people of Andres were naive enough to agree to follow Sarandis in the first place - to turn a blind eye to what he's done to the population - to sit inactive as he turned into a despot.

Are we really to believe they'll show any greater discretion in selecting a new leader to follow should we ever succeed in deposing the tyrant? [ he scoffs dryly ] They made their bed. Let them lie in it.

What kind of attitude is that, La Krail? [ the dwarf frowns and takes a large bite of bread ] Anyone'd be better than that son of a glabrezu.

[Felicity is at the front desk, browsing through a magazine when the phone rings. However, instead of speaking in her normal voice, she puts on a raspy, Jersey-ish accent.]

Karthur Institute, this is Veronica.

[a pause.]

Oh, hi there, Mr. Wallace. How's it goin'? ... ah-huh ... ah-huh ... well, sure I can tranfer ya through. Just let me put you on hold for one second.

[she hits the hold button, places the phone back on the receiver and goes back to the magazine. This part of the job is actually fun.]

[Lila loves the library because she is a closet nerd and she will never admit to how much she missed when she was... catted. She basically missed all of high school and then she dropped out. Remedial is not the word. Add in the perpetual lack of sleep and it isn't uncommon to find Lila curled up in one of the corners reading something or other, a notebook by her side and a purple pen being twisted between her fingers.

At the moment, she's reading Moby Dick because she was supposed to read it her last semester and never ended up doing it, but she remembers the basics from errant in-class texting with Cassel. Pausing her pen flittering, she scribbles something in her notebook that looks suspiciously like "this book sucks" before turning the page and yawning.

Wow, the soporific qualities of this book were not exaggerated.]

[ coming out of his office located close to the lobby is the dapper sir chessing, one of the two oft-spoken of dragon's claws, wynn's special agents. he hears the tail end of felicity's conversation and smiles slightly, veering her way to hover by the desk ] All in order?

[ maybe it's because she's in one of the back corners that she's easy to overlook, but when dumage wanders into the library, an unlikely looking regular visitor of the room in her sexy dress and high heels, she glances about as if trying to see if anyone else is there, before disappearing into one of the small specialty rooms in the back. she's in there for a short time while lila reads, before coming out, no books in hand. she stops short, seeing the girl this time, and looking surprised for half a second, before composing her expression and glancing at lila's reading material. ] What a dreadful book.

[Phineas watches them curiously for a time, amusing himself with the juxtaposition of familiar words with words he's never heard.]

[He can't help but raise his glass and nod at the Drow's point, though he isn't moved to do much more.]

What has this... Sarandis, was it? What's he done?

[Those heels... want. She glances up mildly, taking the rest in.]

So I've heard. Didn't want to take anyone's word for it.

If ye believe the rumors - which we do - he betrayed the old King of Andres Isle, the man he served and advised for years, by killin' his Queen in a mad quest for power.

The son was accused - a young prince, only 16 or so - imprisoned and sentenced to death for treason to the land, but his father, the King, tried to steal him away from the Isle in the dead of night.

Sarandis was waiting for him, with a unit of guards, and the boy and his father were both beheaded. They took the King's head off publicly - bloody spectacle, that was. Mobs screaming about corruption, and here sat Sarandis with a ready plan in place to replace the monarchy with a parliamentary system where all his fat cat friends and supporters would sit and raise him up as Prime Minister. A ruddy ruse, that's what it is. He has the whole Parliament in his pocket, runs the country like a true despot, that one. Hates Shadow of any kind, and took their land, their homes, their jobs. Sometimes their lives.

Andres is a dangerous place, lad, for any Shadowkind to venture. And now there's talk of Sarandis joining some cult that's using technology to control Shadow creatures. Some kind of experiments, chopping people up, messy, horrible rumors. [ he shudders ] And that's all just the tip of it.

I suppose that's your funeral. [ shrug ]

[ anyone cutting through the lobby on this day in early may will notice a parade heading through: castle servants toting a number of pet carriers from which issue a number of puppy whines, a few servants with trotting dogs on leashes, and one at the back carrying a very large cage with a slithery pal inside. behind them all is a short, energetic blonde girl, this little guy in her arms, as she gives them all orders ] Careful! Don't rattle Nile's cage. Poor baby's been through enough lately!

[Alaric would quickly become a regular fixture in the library as the month wore on--spending just as much time in here each day as he did ~~at the bar~~ on any other assignment handed to him. Mostly he kept to himself, but that didn't mean he kept a low profile, exactly. By the end of each day, the table he'd commandeered for himself would be stacked with texts.

Most of these were informational, as familiarizing himself with this world's history was high on Alaric's list of priorities going forward. He'd also venture into the domains of arcane lore and biology as there were a number of races and creatures he'd never encountered before co-existing with humanity. All the while, he was taking what looked to be extensive notes.

It was a vast difference to the drunken first impression he'd given at the party at the start of the month, but it was clear that he was in his element here.]

[Aaaand even when he's on desk duty, Alaric is more interested in the books he's smuggled along than actually providing any sort of cover. The phone will ring, and he'll reach over to lift the receiver before promptly hanging it back up without bothering to so much as glance up from whatever he was reading that day.

Look, there was a lot to learn about this place. It's not like he wasn't investing his time wisely or anything. Besides, he'll usually pick up and do the whole Karthur Institute spiel if it rang more than three times in the span of five minutes, just in case the same person kept calling back. At least he had a system, right?]

Nah, can't actually die of boredom. [Serious amounts of experience here, cats are boring as hell.]

[Phineas' eyes widen more and more as the dwarf continues his tale. Despite favoring the Drow's viewpoint when he'd walked in, hearing the whole story from the dwarf seems to start a fire in him. He slams his drink and stands up when the tale is over.]

What in the nine hells are we doing drinking in our castle while good men are being killed? What can be done to stop this madman?

[A secluded table in the back has become more home to Phineas than his room. After a few days, the heap of books becomes a permanent fixture, eventually obscuring Phineas.]

[He's not overly intelligent or wise - but he's spent most of his life buried by books, studying his craft, so this setting is very comforting to him. He also is very lacking in history and general knowledge of this world, so whatever he can read to help him acclimate to the world and the way these folk speak is of great interest to him.]

[Feel free to walk over and pester him while he attempts to learn things.]

[His room is filled with books he's smuggled out of the library, and a few of those end up posted here during the days he runs the desk also. Phineas spends a lot of the time reading and taking notes, alternately drawing obscure symbols and trying to draw correlations between them and what he's reading in the books.]

[He's actually really enjoying the interrupting phone calls, if he's not in the middle of a deep thought. About half of the calls he redirects to voicemail without even answering - but if he's not tied up, he happily talks in circles with the callers until they get fed up and hang up on him. He's trying to get a better grasp on how these people converse, so this exercise really helps.]
