[ Today's the fourth of July, and the city is bustling with happy, smiling citizens on their way to watch fireworks tonight with their loved ones. And then there's the Corvette of people sailing through traffic with almost desperate abandon, as Des steers his way through the city with a basically heartwrenching nat 20 drive check towards the hospital. Rafael lets Violet sit on his lap in the passenger bucket seat, but he doesn't say a word as he stares forward grimly, lost inside his thoughts entirely the whole way there.

They make startling time. There's another car of Knights on the way, but lagging quite a bit behind by the time Des pulls into a spot right up front. ]

[ when she rounds the corner, and with vi gone inside, raf affixes him with a judgmental look ] Her brother?

Yeah, Des drives like a maniac, as it turns out. It's really -- if we got arrested I wouldn't have been surprised. [She moves forward, hands reaching toward the edge of the bed before she pulls them back, worrying her fingers together.]

Are you... [No, she isn't okay, that is a stupid question and Vi cuts herself off.] They're outside, both of them. Burt said you wanted to see us?

It sounded better than implying she was a swinger. What? Did you wanna be her brother?

[And then he just... flicks him on the ear. Or tries to because there's a lot of hair involved and I'm not rolling an attack for a bitchy earflick.]

[ the smile grows the tiniest bit at the mention of des' speed demon ways. but then fades altogether. ] Before I go...

[ GLARE. at least all this playground bs is distracting him from waiting on vi. or crying. ] Did you hear what she said about Eterna's condition? [ because he sure didn't, tell him everything ]

Yeah. I thought you might. [She looks around for a chair, decides its too far away and perches on the edge of the bed, tugging her knee up so she can still face the dying woman.] Do you want me to, like, write notes for people?

[He huffs.] It's bad. Something Myri did must have kept her stable, but they couldn't help her any further than that. She was a goner and then... she just woke up.

[ she shakes her head very slightly, and her eyes shift to the side table, where violet's necklace is laid out ] You should hold onto it.

[ he takes that in a sec ]

She must remember. To have asked for us both.

I gave it to you. It was gift, you're not meant to give it back. [She smiles a little, but it comes at the same time as the tears starting to fall.]

Yeah, and don't you think that's a little weird? Myri's no slouch, but I don't think she's capable of bringing back someone's memories. [(Wis 21)]

You already gave me something better. [ it's said gently, but with good humor. ] I wouldn't be here now if I'd been wearing mine.

Elena has it. I haven't actually, um, gotten the balls to ask for it yet. I think I'm avoiding it. [She sucks in a breath, there is no stopping the tears now, it's impossible.] Why did you do it? Jade, they would have figured something out, he would have had to let go of you to get the necklace from me. Why didn't you just wait?

You have another explanation?

No, but if she was gonna intervene somehow, you'd think she would've blessed you with better aim.

She took Eterna's memories in the first place. She urged her to leave this world.

I do not think she wanted her to remain a part of it.

No, no it's not. [She shakes her head, but a little laugh bursts out. Because she would say the exact same thing so as much as she hates what Jade did she can't fight it too hard. She would have done the same thing, she did.]

She took her memories because Jade asked her to. [He rolls his eyes.] And if she took her memories, then why give her back the new ones? What was so important about us?

Isabella told us everything. [She seems to waver a little, before she just gives up and does what she's wanted to do since the night before. Pulling her legs up, she turns and just lays down next to her friend. She can't do this otherwise.] You know who my mom is, a death bed promise? That's like... cheating.
