[ Today's the fourth of July, and the city is bustling with happy, smiling citizens on their way to watch fireworks tonight with their loved ones. And then there's the Corvette of people sailing through traffic with almost desperate abandon, as Des steers his way through the city with a basically heartwrenching nat 20 drive check towards the hospital. Rafael lets Violet sit on his lap in the passenger bucket seat, but he doesn't say a word as he stares forward grimly, lost inside his thoughts entirely the whole way there.

They make startling time. There's another car of Knights on the way, but lagging quite a bit behind by the time Des pulls into a spot right up front. ]

[Vi doesn't even wait for the car to fully stop before she opens the door. Which is probably more comfortable for Raf because even if he was silent the entire ride, she was the one literally shaking. Time is of the essence, right, and time... Fuck time. Time is horrible and it should stop. Where is the man of steel when she needs someone to reverse the spin of the Earth.]

Okay, that was really unsafe and I don't like it. I am pro-seat belts and the proper number of seats per occupants. And I really wish I asked Burt what room she is in. Should we... ask at the desk? I mean should I, while you guys wait in the hall since that was all on TV and I am obviously the grieving sister and who is going to let Italia in?

[She chews on her lip nervously. One of you guys best tell her what to do.]

[sorry, Vi. Des is already jumping out of the car to bolt for the door, without letting either of you untangle yourselves.

Because he's a gentleman. And he rolled a 19 dex.]

I would like to see them try and stop me. [ by the time he gets out though des is like AT THE DOORS ALREADY, going inside, jesus. ]

[WOW SHE IS SURROUNDED BY DICKS. She clambers out of the car (dex 5) and might have elbowed Raf in the throat on her way out. She doesn't think he cares much so she doesn't apologize. The girl who apologizes for everything, and she doesn't apologize. Whoops.]

Jesus, could he wait? [She backs away and makes a shooing motion at Raf, she will close the damn door for him because, well, honestly, they're the two important people at the moment.] I'll lock up.

[As they come in, Des is already leaning on the front desk.] Eterna Jade. Coma patient? Gunshot wound? It was on TV. What room is she in?

[ the woman taps it into her computer, without seeming to recognize des. probably thankfully. "Room 317. Elevators are right down that hallway."

as rafael reaches the doors, he yanks out a pair of sunglasses and keeps his head down as he goes inside (disguise check 20), not bothering to even approach the desk since des presumably got the number ]

[IS HE ANDIE? BECAUSE HE IS REALLY FRIGGIN' FAST.]

Why me? [Well now she is talking to herself. Whatever, Italian Stallion, girl's got some issues to work out as she scampers towards the speed demon. At least she doesn't need to disguise herself. She looks like an exhausted teenager, not a pretty co-host covered in blood. Plus, out of all of them she is the least likely to be stopped by anyone.]

[Des does slow it down a bit so he's not completely barreling through the halls, because they have to get to an elevator at some point. And what ho, that's where they catch up to him- pressing an elevator call button.]

She's in 317. And we should probably figure out who should go first so we don't overwhelm her. [He points at Vi.] My vote is her.

You are probably right, si. [ HE DOES NOT SOUND PLEASED, B/C WHAT IF SHE DIES IN THOSE TWO SECONDS OF VI GOING IN BEFORE THEY DO, but oh fine. doors ding open. ]

[So she reaches him only to immediately back peddle.] What, why me? I don't want to go in first. She barely knows me.

[nothingsodivine]

[He holds the elevator door open so she and Rafael can get in.] She asked for you, Buttercup, and between the two of us, he's the guy who shot her- no offense- and I'm... I'm complicated. It just needs to be you, okay? [He slides on into the elevator himself.]

As he says. [ so much awkward ]

[Whimper. She crosses her arms defensively, like she is protecting herself.] I hate you both right now.

Hate me later, kiddo. [ELEVATOR TIME.]

[ there's nothing but elevator music for a moment, and then the doors ding open on three after what seems like too long and too short of a time. rafael looks at des, and then motions for vi to go on.

it's not hard to see the numbered doors up and down the hall there, and the flag for 317 sticks out, far down the line. a nurse is just walking out of the room with a clipboard, checking something. ]

[They're making her walk all the way down there by herself? Why are they doing this to her? It takes her a second to locate the right number (spot 12) but then she reacts the way she is prone to. She takes it at a run (dex 17), calling to the nurse.] Excuse me, nurse! [She stops near the door.]

Can I... can I go in? She's still awake right?

[romanticidal]

[ the nurse stops and looks back at her, then glances back towards the door. "Miss Jade?" she frowns deeply. "Yes, but..." she hesitates. "Her condition is very tenuous. It's really a miracle that she's awake at all. Are you her family?" ]

[Tenuous sounds worse than how Burt had phrased it and Vi has to press her lips together for a second before she can answer.]

She's my sister.

[romanticidal]

[ the nurse crit fails, and her face falls, in clear sorrow for the connection she has to the woman in the room.

"I'm so sorry. We had a difficult time finding any information about who she was or we would have contacted you sooner..." she draws her aside a few more feet. "We've never seen anything like what's happening with her. It's as if... well, as if she had already been dying, and this just accelerated the process. She wouldn't respond to any healing, any medicine... And then she just woke. Just like that." ]

[Just like that. Like when she got her memories back, just like that. Her lips twitch in a tiny smile.]

She does that. [She ducks her head, tears already starting.] I can go in? They're -- [She waves a hand back at the men.] They're with me, they might have more questions, I just want to see her.

[Des apparently just rolls really high where Jade is concerned except for when he has to lie. (listen 19)

He steps up to the nurse, as if to confirm.] Yeah, hi. I'm her brother. This is her fiance. We should have been here sooner. It's terrible what happened to her. [(bluff 26). Which is pretty hilarious considering he had to say that with a straight face. He nods at Vi, urging her to go in.]

[romanticidal]

[ maybe it's something in des' demeanor or maybe it's just that he especially doesn't look remotely elven, but now the nurse NAT 20S and she looks at him suspiciously. "... Her brother, did you say?" and over her shoulder to vi: "You can go in, dear."

then back to des. "I think I'm going to go find the doctor. Would you gentlemen mind not crowding her too much? She's in a very delicate state. Any excitement might..." she lets that trail off ominously. ]

[She pauses a moment longer before moving forward into the room. She doesn't make it very far before the sight of Jade in the hospital bed just paralyzes her. Des and Raf severely overestimated her ability to function when faced with this. Her voice is a croak, raspy and hesitant.]

Hey.

[Des scowls at her as she passes.] Yeah, I'm adopted and I'm real sore about it too. Thanks for giving me something else to talk about with my therapist.

[And there that matter is destined to rest.]

[ it probably doesn't help that a) she looks like the living dead and b) everyone has been talking about her like she's already dead for the last so many hours. her skin is very uncharacteristically pale, her lips dry and colorless, and there's a wooziness to the way her eyes roll around the room to find the source of the voice. when she does, her lips struggle up in the smallest ghost of a smile. ] That was... fast. [ her voice breaks a bit under the weight of a cough and it's clear what an effort words are from the thin, weak quality of those few. ]
