Super strength and speed. Your typical comic book superhero-y stuff. [ Pause. ] Not that I think I was a hero or something. It was just a job.

No, this is different. This isn't sitting back and letting other people take charge. This is being told that I'm a liability, that I have to stay behind, without a choice. And -- [She makes a sound like an angry cat and shoves the tea away without tasting it.] -- Most people don't have to fall asleep at night and have their failures forced on them with that feeling turned up to eleven. So... no, you're wrong. It's damn near impossible to master because it doesn't end and I always feel it, like its there under my skin, like an illness. I can barely tolerate it.

What would you have us do instead? To dangle you closer to him, when we still do not know what it is he desires from you? Merely that he seeks to lure you in, to try to sway you to whatever his purposes may be.

[ he looks down, brow knitted slightly as he tries to explain himself. ] I do not for a moment believe he would succeed in that, but there is a considerable risk that if he realizes you will not come of your own accord, he will change his tactics and seek to take you by force.

[Usually she is okay with what other people eat, so long as they don't try to force it on her (which is why she doesn't force vegetarianism on anyone else as a kindness), but stuff like caviar and veal (IT IS A BABY COW!) and any other meat that is a cute baby animal, she can't always hide her distaste for.

Especially fish eggs, apparently.]

I will definitely remind you of that. [A beat.] Where do you even live?

Used to live in Manhattan. [DING goes the elevator. He reaches over to hold the door closed so she can get out.] Top floor of an old boarding house. My lease ran out about two months before I saddled up with you guys. Hotels ever since.

Not that I'm saying anything, but knights have free room and board... [Out she swans.] I'm from California. Probably.

Ha ha ha. Like no one's ever pulled that one on me. If Wynn ever got me, I'd still be living out on the street. I go where the work is. [And maybe now that he's got his buddies in New Orleans to quit leering at him, he can actually go back.] Manhattan's just a place I stayed. New Orleans was my home. That better part of a year we spent down there was the first time I'd been back since the 80's.

Never been. Not that I recall at least. Who knows if I've actually been. Funerals are pretty big there, it's probably happened... [She rubs her head absently.] Which 80's?

1980's. [He snorts.] Rule of thumb? I barely remember anything before 1920. It's all just kinda hazy.

You were trying to help Jade and thought the artifact to be that of a good goddess only. You could not have known any differently. And it's possible they could have discovered what you are through other channels: they certainly had some way of hunting down the others.
