Why Wynn ever thinks there will be such a thing as a 'simple recon mission' we just don't know.  

Several Knights were dispatched to a small isolated town in Germany where magic was rumored to not function, only to discover that the situation was a bit more complicated.  Yes, magic didn't function when attempted - sometimes.  But other times it had bizarre and dangerous side effects, including driving townspeople insane.  

Research led the team to a company called Luckman Industries who had bought digging rights to make a large quarry beneath the town, but further investigation revealed that they had actually constructed a massive underground laboratory instead.  Some sort of strange device stood at the center of it, magical in nature, but when they attempted to leave, they found the doors locked, and were forced into trying magic despite the potential side effects.

The spell seems to have attracted the attention of something within the building itself - a disembodied voice that's offered them a (mostly) pleasant greeting - to the Luckman Industries computer-aided enrichment center.

There will be cake.

I think you're giving it a lot more credit than it deserves. I don't think it has any control over how our magic's turned back on us. That's the experiment. With any luck, one of our spells will backfire and blow this whole place to hell.

It certainly seems to have expectations. [Remember how disappointed she got when they figured out how to avoid leaving Mars?? He shrugs, grimacing at Faye's comment.] Let's just hope it doesn't come to anything like that.

[ on to room 05, which is a nice square room, that just so happens to have a wall of fire blocking the path to where the door must be. the flames are about five feet high, but occasionally lick higher. ]

This next test is highly unsafe. Honestly, I'm not certain how it passed through the regulation committee. But given that the chamber must be completed in order to continue on to the next test, we're just going to have to muddle through.

How did I escape a room full of fire to end up in ... a room full of fire? [this is bullshit tbh.]

Repetition is a necessary and integral part of the testing process, to eliminate the potential for extreme outlying data.

[ there appear to be a series of panels underneath the fire itself, out of which it's coming. :O ]

The fire is coming out of those panels. [she motions to the ground.] If you can't put out the fire, maybe it'll stop if we damage them somehow?

We might be able to close them, if nothing else. [(wis 17) He glances at Faye and Emma. HEY LADIES. USE YOUR OPEN/CLOSE SPELLS.]

[ the panel closes... quenching about a six inch diameter section of flame. :'| ]

Well, that's disappointing.

[Gold raises a hand and casts dispel magic because fuck it. maybe the fire is magical.]

[ the LIES whirs up in the distance, which is enough to put everyone on edge after what just happened.

but then

heavy rain starts to fall everywhere, indoors. which, incidentally, puts out all those flames, even while drenching them all to the bone. ]

We should go. It could start back up. [No really. She is going to go cross that threshold and head for the next door before shit dries out.]

[she's zooming right along after faye ok. SHE DIDN'T WANT TO GET WET AGAIN 8( but it's better than being on fire she guesses????]

Every time that thing works in our favor, I'm a little more concerned about what's gonna happen next time it doesn't.

[ the next room also has an obstacle - a pool of water separates them from the door, thirty feet across. On the opposite ledge, in front of the door, are two cubes. The water looks about five feet deep. ]

This next test is a scientific inquiry into which of your teammates is most likely to be eaten by deadly piranhas. If you feel you have grown attached to your flesh in the course of testing, subjects are advised to proceed with caution.

How big is this place?? [She looks at the pool and at the boxes on the other side.] When we get home, I'm working on something that can just teleport us out of this kind of bullshit.

I can run a current through the water to roast the fish. I don't know how fast it'll dissipate afterwards, though.
