The "afterparty" is rumored to be the real main event of the night. A black-tie affair in the lavish, opulent ballroom, it is every new Knight's chance to mingle and meet some of their new brothers in arms. Of course, a couple hours are provided following the ceremony for everyone to change, do hair and makeup, and choose from the vast array of formal attire in the closets of the balcony "dressing rooms" located at the top of spiraled staircases on either side of the ballroom. A separate dressing room exists for men and women, and they include full bathrooms (with, thankfully, very modern plumbing).

The squires are usually among the last to arrive, and the ballroom is full to the brim with a fancy array of people, of all shapes, sizes and species.

Hope you aren't shy. They're all here to meet you.

Feel free to make your own open threads for people to come congratulate your newly pledged knight.

ooc; also if your Knight wants to get all gussied up, you can make a Disguise (Cha) check for how good they were at hair/makeup/stylin', etc! This goes for... any time.

[David actually looks fairly decent (disguise 13) - not amazing, but decent. He also tends to hang out on the edges of the crowd with a drink, but people don't usually come right up to him, so when Skye asks him to dance he will obviously glance around to see who she's talking to and get confused when he realizes ...

... oh. She's talking to him (wisdom 3). He follows by looking appropriately confused.]

[ Amused, Skye presses her lips together to try and obscure her smirk. ]

Come on. If you were gonna cling to wall all night, you didn't have to come to a party to do it.

[Oh. Well then. Heh. Dancing isn't exactly David's strong suit. He's basically Kira Yukimura. Put a sword in his hand and he's got the grace and speed. Any other element, and he'll probably fall flat on his face.]

I'm not clinging.

[Yes, David, that is totally helping your case.]

I'm just not a dancer.

[hacker]

[ She rolls her eyes. ]

You're overthinking this. I'm not asking you to lead the Moscow ballet in a performance for the President here.

No, but I'd assume you don't want a guy with almost a foot on you stepping on your feet.

[Because he will totally do that. His dance mod is a -1.]

Yeah, well, lucky for you, these aren't my shoes. Scuff all you want. [ She pops a shoulder in a shrug, nodding her head back towards the open dance floor. ] Come on. Just once.

[generaldavideus]

[He could dig in his heels and be super stubborn about it but he also has a feeling that Skye isn't going to let this go that easily (wisdom 17). So he sighs and nods before agreeing what is sure to be a disaster.

If he actually rolls well for this, the narration will probably die laughing.]

That's the spirit.

[ She leads him out to the more open space and pulls him in closer to dance. Apparently, she was saving her best moves for David, which will make either total failure or actual success extra hilarious probably (perform: dance 22). ]

[And in true David fashion, he ... fails miserably at this particular end of socializing. In fact, it could even be said he fails spectacularly (perform: dance 2). He's trying to stick with your basic one-and-two but he's off the rhythm and it's possible he may never find it. He's not even charismatic enough for Kevin James' funky fresh dance moves.

The narration apologizes for your feet, Skye, because it's pretty certain that his massive stompers probably land on one of hers at least once.]

[ The good news is that as far as people to dance with like that go, Skye's probably the best. She gives up on any semblance of legit dancing for a more Taylor Swift approach when she notices him fucking it up masterfully, which is good because it's more fun anyway, and she makes no secret of laughing at him about it. But it's the good-natured, enjoying his failure kind of laughing, not the malicious mockery kind. ]

[At least she's being good natured about it. He can at least pick up on a little of that but his frustration with himself makes it difficult (sense motive 7). Eventually he just huffs before stepping off to the side.]

I'm sorry, I can't do this.

[hacker]

No, wait! [ She reaches for his arm to stall him, softening immediately. ] I'm sorry. That was stupid, I shouldn't have ... laughed at you. It wasn't that bad. [ diplomacy 21. ]

[generaldavideus]

[He huffs but he nods in acceptance of the apology. He's gotten better but he still doesn't know how to be a social creature 90% of the time.]

I'm pretty sure it was that bad, but ... thanks.

[He doesn't sound as injured when he says it, so it's mostly self-deprecating. He knows his dancing skills, they aren't that awesome.]

How about ... we get you a drink and let you lick your wounds. [ She offers genially with a deliberate use of 'we.' ]

[generaldavideus]

[He takes a moment, then nods.]

Sure. Sounds good.

[hacker]

[ And Skye will steer him towards the bar. ]

So where were you from? You know, before here. [ She points to him. ] No accent. But around here, I'm never sure if I should ask about a different country or a different plane.

[generaldavideus]

[He nods for a moment.]

Originally? Chicago. But I'm Shadowkind, so not this Chicago.

[There was also a whole other alternate universe in between. It's complicated.]

Oh yeah? What was your Chicago like?

[generaldavideus]

[He shakes his head.]

I don't really remember it. It was a long time ago, plus the Veil, and I was somewhere else between then and now.

[hacker]

... Somewhere else. [ wait. after carol, it's worth asking— ] Like another plane?

[generaldavideus]

Sort of?

[What follows has become the best way to explain it, even if it isn't actually the same.]

When I was sixteen I got pulled through ... another Veil? To a world called Everworld. From what I've read, it's a world a lot like Faerun, but ... not Faerun. Same level of technology and advancement, different gods.

[hacker]

Yeah, it doesn't sound like you're the only one. Carol said something like that too. Except she's met people who were on both sides of a Veil before, like some kind of parallel universe.

Really?

[He pauses, before shaking his head.]

I haven't met anyone like that here. Even the gods that I knew there were different here. It sounds like her experience is ... unique.

[hacker]

There's a lot of unique going around then. People crossing planes before ever coming through the Veil ... That's supposed to be a one-way trip, and now suddenly, there's all these people who came through, but aren't from Faerun, and who've moved between planes before? It's not supposed to be that easy.

I never said it was easy.

[Everworld was a lot of things, but "easy" isn't one of them.]

I got sucked through a hole in the world made by a wolf the size of a double decker bus. I don't even remember most of it, and since we were mostly caught in the backwash I lived between worlds for ... months after. I would go to sleep in Everworld and wake up back in Chicago again.
