The "afterparty" is rumored to be the real main event of the night. A black-tie affair in the lavish, opulent ballroom, it is every new Knight's chance to mingle and meet some of their new brothers in arms. Of course, a couple hours are provided following the ceremony for everyone to change, do hair and makeup, and choose from the vast array of formal attire in the closets of the balcony "dressing rooms" located at the top of spiraled staircases on either side of the ballroom. A separate dressing room exists for men and women, and they include full bathrooms (with, thankfully, very modern plumbing).

The squires are usually among the last to arrive, and the ballroom is full to the brim with a fancy array of people, of all shapes, sizes and species.

Hope you aren't shy. They're all here to meet you.

Feel free to make your own open threads for people to come congratulate your newly pledged knight.

ooc; also if your Knight wants to get all gussied up, you can make a Disguise (Cha) check for how good they were at hair/makeup/stylin', etc! This goes for... any time.

[He huffs but he nods in acceptance of the apology. He's gotten better but he still doesn't know how to be a social creature 90% of the time.]

I'm pretty sure it was that bad, but ... thanks.

[He doesn't sound as injured when he says it, so it's mostly self-deprecating. He knows his dancing skills, they aren't that awesome.]

How about ... we get you a drink and let you lick your wounds. [ She offers genially with a deliberate use of 'we.' ]

[He takes a moment, then nods.]

Sure. Sounds good.

[ And Skye will steer him towards the bar. ]

So where were you from? You know, before here. [ She points to him. ] No accent. But around here, I'm never sure if I should ask about a different country or a different plane.

[He nods for a moment.]

Originally? Chicago. But I'm Shadowkind, so not this Chicago.

[There was also a whole other alternate universe in between. It's complicated.]

Oh yeah? What was your Chicago like?

[He shakes his head.]

I don't really remember it. It was a long time ago, plus the Veil, and I was somewhere else between then and now.

... Somewhere else. [ wait. after carol, it's worth asking— ] Like another plane?

Sort of?

[What follows has become the best way to explain it, even if it isn't actually the same.]

When I was sixteen I got pulled through ... another Veil? To a world called Everworld. From what I've read, it's a world a lot like Faerun, but ... not Faerun. Same level of technology and advancement, different gods.

Yeah, it doesn't sound like you're the only one. Carol said something like that too. Except she's met people who were on both sides of a Veil before, like some kind of parallel universe.

Really?

[He pauses, before shaking his head.]

I haven't met anyone like that here. Even the gods that I knew there were different here. It sounds like her experience is ... unique.

There's a lot of unique going around then. People crossing planes before ever coming through the Veil ... That's supposed to be a one-way trip, and now suddenly, there's all these people who came through, but aren't from Faerun, and who've moved between planes before? It's not supposed to be that easy.

I never said it was easy.

[Everworld was a lot of things, but "easy" isn't one of them.]

I got sucked through a hole in the world made by a wolf the size of a double decker bus. I don't even remember most of it, and since we were mostly caught in the backwash I lived between worlds for ... months after. I would go to sleep in Everworld and wake up back in Chicago again.

Lapsing between planes is a lot easier than not being able to cross the barriers, no matter how you managed to do it. You don't get it: we've got zero movement here.

[His eyebrows furrow for a moment.]

I would rather be stuck somewhere than stuck between them. It may be easier to do? But that doesn't make it easier on the person doing it.

[ The wind comes out of her sails at that. Awash with sympathy, she softens, shaking her head. ]

[He shakes his head.]

It's not your fault. I just ... I know the Veil is complicated and hard to deal with and no one should be subjected to it. I'm not disagreeing with you. But I know that there are worse worlds to be in than this one. And I know how bad it can get here.

[He rescued an slave ship of Shadowkind heading for Andres. He was on Andres. He knows that this world is far from perfect.]

And if there were a safe, sound way to get people back where they belonged I would be all for it. But in my experience, those options are nonexistent, if not few and far between.

That doesn't mean we should stop looking. And looking means finding out whatever we can about anything that might help, even the dangerous and unpleasant parts.

[He shakes his head.]

That's not what I'm saying at all. I think people should look if that's what they're motivated to do. But they should be careful when they do it. Tearing open holes in the world - it could end really badly if they're not.

For all we know, holes in the world are exactly what's already started to happen. [ She sighs, and this time, the sigh is obvious in its source—she doesn't like not getting it. Not understanding what's going on, not having answers that she can find. And since joining the Knights, she's found more questions than anything else. ]

[He can understand that frustration, or at least recognize it. He can't tell exactly who wore that expression but he remembers someone close to him wearing it. He doesn't know how he can help, but he can at least try.]

Have you met Sir Gar?

[ Shaking her head, ] Who?

Jeanne Gar. She's in the Hoard. She's done a lot of work studying the Veil, and she even presented a paper on it about a year ago. She might be able to answer your questions a little better than I can.

[David didn't go because Loki happened, but if she was presenting a paper, she must at least have some idea of what she's talking about.]

[ Slowly, she nods. ]
