Everybody loves a media circus and the trial of Rafael Giovanni is no exception. If he was famous before, in the days following the shooting, now he's all people are talking about, and all the tabloids want to focus on. The complications presented at some of the early hearings by Jaka, regarding the identity of the Black Scourge and Rafael's alleged reaction have only made the story more appealing to the millions watching.

They've also caused the trial to drag out for months as facts are checked, evidence is poured over, and the jury becomes only more split on the issue. In the meantime, the holidays fly by, and one of the most terrible winters in years blankets Chicago in blizzards.

This log covers any work and non-work related shenanigans the Knights have while staying in Chicago, immediately following the last log and continuing for the next couple months. This will be the Knight's last time in Chicago before the trial: after which they plan to return to the castle to fully Knight Violet and Elena and decide where to head next.

[To think that Myri wouldn't worry about Violet as the winter wears on would just be ridiculous. She doesn't understand what's happening to her friend, doesn't know exactly what the other girl is feeling. But she knows how to make soup and she really like Boy Meets World (early years Topanga sort of speaks to her previous life okay).

She's made herself comfortable in Vi's nest of blankets, leaning against her friend slightly as they spend some quality time in silence.]

[ vi likes it when myri climbs into her nest, honestly. she wants to be alone because she's too emotional and emotionless to actually talk to people like she is okay at all, but she doesn't want to be alone because she's lonely. so myri just being there is perfect. it's also easier since she knows her friend can feel what she's feeling -- something she wishes she could protect myri from, but maybe she's more selfish than she realizes. she doesn't just want myri, she needs myri.

after a while, a couple or a few episodes, violet manages quiet and tired words. ] Wynn is Mr Feeny.

Does that make Gar our Mrs. Matthews? [She agrees though. Except that Wynn never seemed quite so sassy to her. That may be because she rarely talks to him. He makes her nervous, but that's because part of her still worries about doing something and losing this wonderful family, this home she's made.]

Probably. I guess Kat would be Alan. [ i guess vi ships it too. she shifts a little, burrowing deeper into the blankets and sighing, the breath pffting her brittle hair out of her face. winter doesn't just destroy her mental health, it's not very kind to her body. her normally glossy hair is thin and dull, her bright eyes faded, skin pallid and wan, making her look thinner than she actually is. luckily she gives approximately no fucks how she looks and probably hasn't looked in the mirror in a while anyway.

she knows she should eat the soup myri made, but she also doesn't want to move so she's locked in an internal struggle that always seems to side with not moving. oops. ]

[Imagining Kat as the patriarch of their family is amusing and accurate all at once. Myri doesn't really ship Gar and Kat but she does see them as paternal figures since they helped her so much when she first arrived.]

Was school really like this? [She never went. Hell, she had to learn to read when she got here. Glancing past Vi as she burrows in further, she notices the untouched soup on the nightstand and her brow gives a scrunch of worry. But she doesn't say anything. Yet.]

I don't remember. I didn't go to school after I joined the legion and I left college before I flunked out, so. [ she shrugs, like that explains it all. ] It might be.

I like to imagine it is. The teachers all seem to care so much. [And that one with the motorcycle is cute okay.]

Well, it's kind of a profession you go into because you care. That might be real. [ when she talked to alaric that one time he seemed to be pretty gung ho about protecting the kids and educating them and making sure they were alright. ] I don't know, if I did go to school, I would have hated it so maybe it's better I have no memory.

[witchwoman]

The only schools we had were for magicians. And my magic wasn't...well it wasn't quite the same.

[Which isn't really true. She could have tried to get into the University but that meant chancing being around people like Moncriith.]

I think I would like a school like this one though.

Why don't you go now? Take some non-credit class at the college. I think Northwestern is, like, a block away. [ pop culture 18, she knows this from er. ] Never too late or something equally encouraging. Go, fight, win.

[witchwoman]

Oh, I don't think so. I don't even know what I would study. [She's quick to dismiss it, but there's an itch in the back of her mind. Learning to read had been a joy. Maybe learning more could be just as rewarding.]

Unless...you wanted to come with me? [Ulterior motives to potentially get Vi out of the hotel? Or just to spend more time with her? Both? Who knows ]

[ she snorts out a fairly unamused laugh. ] I already did college. And quit. Education and I don't get along. [ there is only so much of a hit her self-esteem can take on a daily basis and school had always been the worst, feeling stupid 24/7 is not fun. ]

[witchwoman]

It could be different here. [But that's the last she says on the subject.]

How's your soup? [Not a better topic. Nice try, Myri]

Cold, probably. I'm not very hungry. [ she sighs. ] Sorry.

[witchwoman]

Don't be. But you do need to eat. [She's gentle about it, not wanting to push too hard.] At some point.

..We could order ice cream sundaes from room service?

[Totally counts as dinner.]

Yeah, sure. [ she still... isn't hungry, but she doesn't want to worry myri and it seems like such a simple thing. surely she can manage a freakin' sundae. she likes ice cream. ]

[Myri will take victories anywhere she can okay. Leaning over to the nightstand, she grabs the phone and starts to dial to order. She obviously knows all of Vi's favorite toppings, because what sister wouldn't??? Hanging back up, she smiles.]

Last one of these I had of these was with Mark. I think the bowl is the size of your head.

[ it doesn't hurt that vi's ice cream habits are the same every time: mint chocolate chip, hot fudge, whipped cream, all the cherries. no, all of them. no, the entire jar. shhh, just do it. ]

Sounds like the one in Harry Potter.

[Myri ordered an extra jar of cherries on the side. Because she loves you.]

I still haven't seen that, you know. [Or read it, but wow that will take a long time.]

There's eight movies. [ she doesn't want myri to think its just the one... ] I have the DVDs in one of those drawers if you want to start your wizarding education. [ she waves a hand toward the small dresser the tv is sitting on because is not like she uses it for clothes or anything. that's what the pile in the closet is for... she is such a mess, but at least she is like that all the time. ]

[Part of her sees the Harry Potter stuff as something that's Vi's to have with Finnick. That's where she's heard all the comments about it, after all- conversations with them that she's walked in on. It's almost like she doesn't feel right stepping into that.]

But how will we ever know if Corey and Topanga get back together? [Apparently they are in the middle of one of those 'breaks' those crazy kids took.]

[ she shakes her head, a tiny little smile, genuine, touching her lips. ] Nah, Cory and Topanga are like you and Finnick. They might have some situational problems, but they're better together.

[ she doesn't mean it to be some inspirational pep talk (because it would be a rubbish one), but she is pretty honest about it. as much as she can't help landing on finnick's side -- no matter how close she and myri are, the solidarity of someone just as emotionally dissolved as she is is irreplaceable -- and as useless as she is in helping myri cope, she does believe the two of them are meant to be together. they're a set. and she is their shawn. with less codependency but just as many daddy issues. ]

Sometimes it just takes them a while to figure it out because like gets complicated and messy.

[At the mention of Finnick, Myri looks away slightly. She's avoided talking about him in relation to herself ever since the last conversation she had with Vi about him. She knows why Vi might feel the way she does, why it's easier for her to understand his perspective, but it doesn't make it hurt less to feel shut down by two people she cares for so deeply.]

Right. [She can't make herself sound convinced in the slightest (bluff 4). It's unfortunate because she had wanted to keep it all light hearted but that wasn't how life worked lately.]

[ sense motive 22, but vi doesn't make a big deal out of it. or say anything at all. because she is a shitty friend/person/human tbh. it makes her feel worse, but she can barely drum up enough energy to exist, the idea of talking to myri about finnick again makes her want to vomit a little because a. she knows she'll say the wrong thing and b. she knows she will say the wrong thing. again. so her mouth stays shut. ]

[And so they sat in silence, Myri already regretting most of her choices of conversation for the evening. More and more, she feels like she can't say the right thing. It hardly occurs to her that maybe there just isn't a right thing to say.]
