Strange transmissions cutting into radio stations with no recognizable source. Mysterious messages in Shadowkind languages that no one's been able to decipher. And very few leads on where to go with all of this, except for a couple names of some of the random citizens who seem to have received the messages. It's hardly much to go on, but definitely an interesting mystery, that takes the small team into the heart of NYC. They arrange their flight to arrive after sundown, for Davin's sake, and he's pretty openly scornful about being assigned to what's likely a wild goose chase.

[Falling into step with Alice.] So what's with the New York hate? [She doesn't look offended however, more amused if anything.]

Born and raised in Boston, it's in my blood. Can't help myself.

Gotcha. [A wry grin pulling at the corners of her mouth.] And you got involved with these guys how, exactly?

I'm a... well, I was a magician's assistant and an escape artist, but it pays for shit, so I got a part time job sort of freelance breaking into places for insurance companies so they could make sure the security was up to snuff. There was an HQ in Boston and I ran into them a few times when we were both stealing magical artifacts from the same place. I always had to put my stuff back so sometimes I swapped out the real ones they stole with the fake ones and after them asking if I wanted a job enough times I just gave in. [ also there was a Thing with Wild Magic but that's not the point, that was just the push over the edge that alice needed to pack up and move to england. also because the boston office blew up. ]

[She's going to need to process that one for a moment before clarifying.]

You were stealing shit and they kept offering you a job? Or like, you were passing on the real artifacts to the Knights?

Little bit of both, if we're being honest.

[incantatio]

[There's a hint of surprise there but she bobs her head, a smirk touching her lips.]

So, the knights aren't all Boy Scouts then. [She at least sounds something close to pleased by this.]

Considering some of us are ladies and some of us are gay, that's probably a good thing. [ a beat. ] Merit badges would be cool though. And pine wood derby...

Could live without the shorts though. [Grin widening as they push out towards the busy Manhattan streets and Sawyer throws a look at Alice like, this is your area of expertise.] You seem to have the cab hailing mastered.

[ she really has, stepping off the edge of the curb and throwing one hand out while she whistles impossibly loud. still not sorry, davin. (dex 21) gonna get that cab in no time, holding the door open for sawyer with a sweeping gesture. ]

[Sawyer slides into the cab and tells the driver they want to head to the Toy Store, making idle chit chat as they travel.]

So the - [Wis 17] Institute. Do you get much of a chance to meet the other people you work with? The ones in different departments?

Oh yeah. There's a main castle that a bunch of people live in and you can just intermingle with everyone. Like, take me. I'm what they call a Freelancer because I don't really fit anywhere, but my boyfriend... is also a freelancer. Ignore him. My best friend, Lance, he's in the sect -- that's what they're called -- that is sort of healers and doctors and stuff. He's a psychologist.

Sects. [Getting the hang of all the terminology.] And everyone is based in... London you said?

Just outside, yeah, that's where the main HQ is, where the boss lives. But there are places all over the world. London, France, I'm literally blanking on any other place on the planet, but there's a bunch.

[ wtg alice. LOOK GEOGRAPHY IS NOT HER STRONG SUIT OK. ]

[Her eyes widen, Sawyer giving a small shake of her head.]

So there's branches all over that you people in HQ would never even see?

Not unless you asked for a transfer or had to stop there during a mission, yeah, probably.

[She bobs her head, thoughtful, absorbing all she can.]

But they set you guys from London so, pretty decent bet that anything big gets handled by HQ, huh. [Drawing conclusions and waiting for Alice to contradict them rather than keep posing too many questions.]

Yup. I can't say for sure because I'd only just started, but it seemed like a bunch of people flew in for Andres, at least, so I'm pretty positive Wynn still keeps tabs on all of his Knights.
