[  The Knights' mission to stop the signal and prevent Draken's cult from spreading whatever subliminal message  was lurking beneath Keijen Blade's performance was a success.  It didn't come without its bumps in the road, however:  Alexander Anderson showed up, and the Knights ran afoul of the Mind Master.    Buffy nearly died fighting Anderson, but in the end, he was defeated, beheaded, and hopefully put to death forever.   Finnick, though, found himself thrust into a mental illusion that convinced him he might still be in the Hunger Games, and left him uncertain about whether any of his life here was real.  

Another surprise came in the form of an announcement by Nadia Reichenov, an artist working with Crombe and company, that she was changing her band name and taking things in a 'new direction'.   This direction was perhaps revealed when after her performance, she approached the Knights in Rafael's dressing room - and handed them the necklace that connects her to the Nightmare God Malaak'a, saying she was willing to tell them everything.  ]

[his expression falls and he glances down at the floor.] Myri's got plenty of people she can turn to. She doesn't need another person who can't help her or Finnick.

[ GDI DES. although you probably think is about her being mad that you're abandoning them or sth but no this is not

[ frustration creeps across her pursed lips ] I froze, ok. I don't know how to handle this kind of thing. I'm not made for this kind of thing. So I just-- I left her there, tried to get out the second I could. What the fuck is wrong with me?

[it's cute that you really think he's any better at this, kat. character development or not.] Nothing. Some people aren't good at that sort of thing. I'm not good at it. Sometimes I just accidentally say the right thing and sometimes I can fake it so well, I convince people it's what they wanna hear. There's no real in-between.

[He rolls his shoulders.] She knows you. You being here for her is enough.

And why is it any different for you?

Because life is unfair and I'm selfish. [it comes out a bit too bitter- probably more than he expected and once the words are out, he has to let them hang there.] I don't know what to do. I honestly don't. Staying won't fix it.

But leaving might make it worse.

Kat. [look at this guilty face. it's pretty pathetic.] I have dedicated so much of my life to this case, but if I don't take some time away from it, I don't know I'm gonna make it through to the end. And then I won't be any good to anyone. I have to do this... Just for a little while.

What do you think the rest of us have been doing? Sure it sucks, and it's hard, but it's sticking together that gets us through it.

And we'll still be together when we're back on this. It's just downtime.

[KAT WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU. STOP MAKING HIM FEEL WEIRD.]

I'm not talking about the fucking mission, Des. I'm talking about our family.

Our... [Oh.

Oh. Well, fuck.] You think I'm breaking up with the family?! Jesus, Kat, I'll be a phonecall away- I'll come around whenever I get a chance. I can't just up and leave you all when you actually still want me around. I'm just not living in London anymore.

I- [what do you even say to that. he's just making horrified D: faces.] I'm sorry.

[He backs away from her to go and pick up his bag.]

Looks like it. [ SCATHING LOOK AT HIS BAG ]

[He opens his mouth a few times to say something, but he can't manage anything particularly profound or helpful, so he chooses not to say anything at all, which given Des's reliance on words (even poor ones) seems pretty telling. He hefts his bag over his shoulder, shakes his head, and walks towards the door.

he'd feel a hand grip his arm, yank him around ] Don't you fucking walk away from me like that.

[Des doesn't even fight back, just drops his bag in shock, and stares at her like he's just gotten caught accidentally kicking a puppy and feels really bad about it. He knows why she's acting this way (wis 13), and what it means for him to be walking out, but at the same time...]

What d'you want me to do, Kat? You knew this was gonna happen. I warned you it would happen. The best I can offer you is that it won't be forever, which is more than I could've promised anyone a couple years ago.

Well, it's not good enough. [ she reaches out to shove him right in the chest ] You've always got your bullshit excuses.

[ one of the doors opens up and fred walks out slowly, surveying the situation with a canny gaze that makes it clear he knows what's up. his tone is carefully neutral, all concern cautiously tailored out of it as he says: ] Everything alright out here? [ kat's back to him, he lifts his eyes to des', silently communicating that he's here to potentially defuse any blonde bombs about to go off, if he can. ]

[fred's arrival makes des look up, pained and mildly panicked.]

I was just... leaving.

[said like that is literally the whole problem here. which it is.]
