[Kyomi's grin fades instantly.] Oh gods, I'm so sorry. [she swallows and looks down at the baby, wagging her fingers in front of her face to distract herself and the baby from all this sad talk.] At least she has a collection of aunties and uncs, then.

[ she offers kyomi a small smile and nods her thanks for the condolences. she still doesn't know how she's supposed to answer? ]

Yeah, she's got a ton. King of Andres is her sweet uncle.

King of Andres, eh? Well, that's somethin'. [Kyomi barely knows how to respond, but she has her own experiences to draw from, and that's literally all she has.] My mum died when I was born. I was raised by the people who took her in after she crossed over from the Veil, so I know a little somethin' about family bein' what you make of it.

And I think he needs us. We're not the only ones making our families from scratch, we're family to him, too.

Aye. [She glances down and smiles.] He seems like quite the man- intense, yet he's gotta have a big heart to have such a mix of people here, yeah?

Yeah. I wish he could get closer, but I get why he can't. It's got to be hard enough as is, sending us into danger and knowing we might not come back.

One could argue that's a risk parents take, and it doesn't stop them any, but... parenting and leading an army aren't the same thing, yeah? [Kyomi laughs her own comment off, and leans down to conversationally whisper at the baby.] You like that silly ol' rabbit, don't you, dearest?

Finnick is her favorite. [ vi made it so. not subtle at all. ] You do make a point though. He's pretty much the team Dad.

I could get used to that. If he was a warmongering arse, I'd probably have hit the ground runnin'. As it stands... I don't mind an extra father figure.

[She beams at the baby.] Can I show her a trick?

[she holds her hands up and casts a dancing lights spell just above the baby's head.] Glowbugs for a glowbug.

[ lucia can't focus very far, but she can see the sparkle of the lights and she seems so fucking entranced by this magic, because even if she was used to it, which she should be, she lacks object permanence so THIS IS ALL SO NEW AND FASCINATING. ]

That's the only magic I can do, and this is about all it's good for, yeah? [Kyomi laughs, maneuvering the lights around.]

meanwhile vi is laughing at her dumbo baby. ] It's not bad magic, definitely found the target audience. Soon you'll be the baby whisperer and you can have your own show on TLC. Or whatever the UK version of TLC is.

Or I'll just go back to California and soothe American babies with my sultry foreign accent. [she shakes her head.] Always need a back-up plan if this knight thing doesn't work out for me.

Mmm California. Sand and palm trees and heat. [ she flops back onto the grass, completely diverting the point. ] I need a desert in the backyard.

Well, that would be lovely, but you'd have to convince London to suffer a drought first.

I could make that happen. [ the little flowers sprout again, this time surrounding kyomi in tiny orange and white blossoms. ] I can do the opposite of that too, I just don't... like it. Deserts have flowers!

[Oooh they match her hair. Don't mind if she do. She begins gathering some up to braid together in a flower crown on a whim.] I wouldn't wanna do the opposite of that if I had that sort of gift either. Who'd want to kill flowers?

[ and no one gets them for her because she can grow them herself that is such crap always and forever. ]

Well, that's a load of shit. [She covers her mouth and looks down at Lucia apologetically.] Pardon me, a thasgaidh. But I can cook my own dinner- that doesn't mean I won't go out and eat, yeah?

[ she waves a dismissive hand. ] I swear in front of her all the time. Vulgarity is not the worst thing she's going to pick up from me. And I convinced someone that cussing is good for a child's vocab or something, so I feel like I should practice the shit I'm preaching.

[ yet she won't swear in front of shayla. that's different. she can ruin her own babies, she can ruin other babies. ]

But yeah, that's what I think, but flowers are different. No one even buys flowers anymore.

They think it's a romantic gesture that went out with askin' dates to the cotillion. [eyeroll.] My mum had a garden, and my papa always brought her fresh flowers every Friday, so maybe I'm just old-fashioned about these things.
