The ballroom of the hotel is a study in elegance, which isn't surprising considering who the bride is, but perhaps more surprising are the personal touches and sheer sentimentality of the room. Circular tables are scattered on the edge of the dance floor, covered with ivory tablecloths, and while there isn't a seating chart, everyone invited can find a place card with their name scrawled on it so they can claim their spot at a table. Along with the simple centerpieces and floral arrangements, each table holds a different photo of Lila and Sylar, often times selfies, and a location that has some sentimental meaning. London, Nando's, New York, Chicago, Tahiti, Andres, etc. (The tiny table for two by the dessert table is labeled Oregon.)

Once they're presented to the guests, Lila and Sylar have their first dance, to get it out of the way and so no one can ruin it. After a dinner of steak, crab stuffed sole, creamed potatoes, and late summer vegetables, the DJ starts playing dance music and probably won't stop all night if we're being honest. Castle party music this is not. There is a brief pause to cut the cake and so Lila can inhale about twelve petit fours by herself, but it's party, party, party all night long. And, oh yeah, it's an open bar.

Just my mother really. I mean, we had a father, but I never really knew him. Aurelian did.

Oh? Why's that? I mean- were you two not raised together?

[pickyourbattles]

Well, we were, but my father lived in an elven settlement and my mother lived in the city - she's the one who raised us. Aurelian was supposed to take my father's place some day, as a Sentinel, so she was sent there to train with him from time to time.

[olreliable]

And you weren't invited? [Her brow furrows in a sort of concerned confusion.]

That must have been hard- being away from both of them.

I never really knew him, so it was hard to... miss him, I suppose. I was meant to take my mother's place, so I stayed with her to train at the same time.

[olreliable]

Ohhh... well, that's neat that you two were both going to take over the different family businesses.

[pickyourbattles]

I thought so. Aurelian was... less enthusiastic.

[olreliable]

Why? [Maybe because she was going to end up trapped in vampire hell instead.] Did you get the better job out of the deal?

[pickyourbattles]

I... suppose she might have seen it that way. It's not as if she particularly loved libraries and acquiring knowledge, either, but being the Sentinel of the Vale--

Well. It was a lifetime appointment to serve as a guardian of my father's village. Forsaking all, er, other personal pursuits.

[olreliable]

Oh... Like dating, I'm guessing? [Well they are currently on a date so it's sort of relevant.]

[pickyourbattles]

Yes, precisely that. Our, er, existence wasn't ever supposed to be. My father broke the rules, so to speak.

[olreliable]

[Willow's eyebrows raise.]

Did he get in trouble for that?

[pickyourbattles]

He did. But that was why they said his child would have to take over for him when he died. They never expected there'd be two of us.

[olreliable]

Whoops. [She gives him a little smile.] Sounds like it worked out. I can't imagine you doing any sort of...guardian...ing.

[pickyourbattles]

Well, neither could Aurelian, really. I think she would have been fine at it, but-- she didn't really have the interest.

[olreliable]

What did she want to do?

[pickyourbattles]

I don't think she'd decided. Either way, she... expected to have much more time before our father passed away.

[olreliable]

Oh no... I'm sorry to hear that. So is that why you were so surprised when you saw her on our mission? I'm guessing the whole... guardian gig wouldn't have put her anywhere near that mess.

[pickyourbattles]

I hadn't seen her in years even before I came through the Veil.

She ran off, rather than take over for him.

[olreliable]

Oh... [She looks a little worried about how much of a bummer this conversation is turning into.]

I'm sorry. I really do think we can go back and get her one day. I mean- we made it through once before.

[pickyourbattles]

It's not there anymore. The fog.

[olreliable]

But it was there! Which means it could come back! Or... we could find it! [She's so optimistic.]

You really think so?

[olreliable]

Sure! I mean... if you had asked me if finding a foggy portal to another world was even a little possible before? I would have said no. But we already found it! Which means we could find it again!
