Merlin would, for the second morning in a row, be disturbed up by an insistent bird pecking at his door. This time, however, it was not one of Sir Thomas's "borrowed" owls, but Fede, Alainn's ever-so-charming hawk. When he opens the door to receive his guest, Merlin would be quickly assaulted by a lot of feathers to the face as she invites herself in, swoops through his room and to his dresser, where she proceeds to hop around apparently in search of something.
When she finds this certain item she somehow manages to pick it up and fly it over to Merlin and drop it into his hands, landing on his shoulder. He would notice a piece of parchment tied to her leg where, upon reading it, it would say "Press the Green Button now!"
The phone (cuz that's what it was that Fede had found for him) would start to buzz in his hand, all the different lights and buttons on it suddenly glowing, though there was thankfully only one Green Button. Now, banking on the fact that Merlin won't drop and break the phone, all he has to do is press the mysterious Green Button and find out what this could possibly be...

"And a good morning to you, Fede." Merlin tilts his head at her, slightly baffled to be seeing her at all, much less this early. "...Can I help you with something?" She can't answer, of course. Not in words. But then Merlin probably wouldn't be too surprised if she started speaking to him, not here.
He braces himself when she flies towards him, but she alights perfectly on his shoulder. Merlin stares at the tag on her leg, looks from it to the object in his hands-
And almost drops it when it starts to buzz and light up.
Almost, but not quite. Merlin gathers his wits enough to recall the instructions he just read, and after another moment presses the green button firmly with an index finger.
"Alright. Now what?"

After a few seconds she pulls one of the ear buds out and smiles into the screen on the phone, directly up at Merlin.
"Well, top o'the morning to ye, Merlin! I hope I didn't wake you up? I tried to wait a bit longer, but the day's already almost half gone!"
no subject
It's only when she speaks that he's sure she's alright, and Merlin laughs a little in relief.
"Uh...no, I was awake." Years of being early to rise so he could fetch Arthur's breakfast and get him ready for the day would make Merlin inclined to agree with her - the day's almost half gone. "You seem cheerful. Bit of a morning person?"
no subject
Also to re-assure herself that Thomas's terrible man-whore qualities weren't rubbing off on him already.
"Aye, I wake up much earlier than this usually, to study my spells. I only ever sleep about four hours a night, one of the perks of being a half-elf."
Fede prawks in Merlin's ear, bobbing her head in the phones direction, then begins to preen Merlin's hair gently. Alainn rolls her eyes at the phone muttering under her breath.
"Alright ye beast, alright. Fede wants us to get a move on. Did you still want me to show you some of the perks of modern living? I'm in the lounge just down from the Dragon's Fire, not too far from the Squire's rooms."
no subject
"Four hours. Even less than I normally get." Merlin offers her a sympathetic smile. He remembers though, sitting up late into the night, reading and memorizing the spells from the book Gaius gave him. Not to learn magic, that would be like learning how to breathe for him. But to give the magic focus. To bend it even more to his will.
"Oh yeah, definitely." Merlin holds perfectly still for a moment longer though, just in case Fede decides to peck at him. At least until he realizes that she probably will if he doesn't get a move on. "I know where that's at! I'm on my way." Merlin lowers the phone, but doesn't disconnect as he leaves his room and turns in the direction of the lounge.

Fede glides over her head to land on the open window sill, the brisk breeze blowing inside putting a light chill in the air. Alainn smiles when she sees Merlin walk in, then hops off the couch and walks towards him quickly.
"I forgot I'd have to tell ye to turn the phone off as well. I guess that's what we're here for today anyway, right? To show you the technological ropes, as it were!" She reaches out for his phone, picking his hand up with hers and showing him the red button to push.
"Green for on. Red for off. It applies to mostly everything, actually, so that's something to remember."
no subject
"Did you know any of this stuff before or did you learn it since coming here?" He remembers Bancroft saying something about trees, and Merlin's pretty sure that phones don't grow on them.

She leads the way back to the couch, sitting down and pulling her knees under her so she is more kneeling in the corner, gesturing for him to make himself comfortable as well while she answers him.
"No, I had to learn everything when I was in Ireland. I honestly didn't remember a thing, I mean I knew the basics like how to get dressed and what things were. But for the rest I had to be taught, or learn on me own."
"It's a very strange feeling to not remember anything, and yet to know when you've never done or seen something before, like an electric light-bulb." A wistful look comes over her face as she looks down at her hands, a tender smile crossing her features when she looks back up at him.
"I didn't even know my own name."
