[ The castle can be a happening place, even on more mundane days. This log is for random interactions over the course of these few months. Because not everyone is into parties, ok. Characters who are not currently squired in may also post, as their characters are living in the castle awaiting their ceremonies.  This takes place after the Knights have returned from Dimitris' wedding. 

You are encouraged to start your own threads and tag around, and feel free to threadjack into any on-going threads that aren't specified as 'closed' in the subject lines since people can enter into rooms even in the middle of what's going on. WE ARE BIG ON THREAD-JACKING HERE. [ His own teasing grin softens into something fond as he takes another bite of Thai. ]

You had your reasons. Back home, things were complicated. And Crane was there. And then we got here and... Well. It took us both a while to find our feet here, I suppose.

[leftenants]

[She raises an eyebrow, wanting to ask what Crane had to do with it-- but maybe that's a can of worms better left unopened, one of those things she's done all she can not to dwell on over the last few years.]

That, and accept that this is our reality for the foreseeable future.

[But even if they went back-- she can't say for sure that she would have said yes, but she wants to believe that she'd still be capable of giving him a chance. He'd more than earned one, at any rate.]

[procurer]

[ He casts her a curious look at that, thoughtful as he chews on a mouthful of dinner to give him a moment to think. ]

Is that what you've done? Accepted you're not going back?

[leftenants]

[She adopts a thoughtful expression of her own, lips pursed slightly as she helps herself to another forkful.]

There's no way back across the Veil. Not right now, anyway. That could change-- but until then, I have to tell myself that this is where I'm meant to be. That I'm here for a reason.

[Because otherwise, she'd feel too helpless, too bitter that she'd been taken away from the family she'd built for herself.]

I have to believe that my serving a cause here is part of a calling.

[procurer]

[ He makes a quiet scoff at that, but it's gentle rather than derisive. ]

You get a lot of those, it seems. But that doesn't explain why I'm here. I'm not exactly the calling type. Besides, you already have a partner when it comes to that department.

[ And he's pretty sure Crane would have a lot of very long words over the fact that Hawley's now here in his shoes. ]

But here's not so bad, I guess. I mean, there's probably worse alternate universes we could have ended up in.

[leftenants]

I find if I question the 'why' of it too often, I start to make myself crazy.

[Why she's here, why either of them is here-- and so she tells herself what she has to in order to keep herself going.]

It helps, that we're not the only ones. So many others have been uprooted and brought here without warning. We're lucky to remember as much as we do.

[procurer]

Yeah, there's that. I've run into one or two who don't remember much of anything.

[ He shudders at the very possibility, the chance of forgetting himself terrifying on an entirely different scope.

It's what has him shooting her a searching glance before offering a wry smile. ]

Guess our luck was good for once, in that case at least. There's some things I'd rather not forget.

[leftenants]

Same here. People seem to be divided on that point.

[She raises an eyebrow at him as she digs a little deeper into the nearest container, helping herself to more.]

Some think it's better to forget and start clean, not to have to miss anything. I think I'd go crazy, not knowing where I come from.

[procurer]

You and me both. [ He makes a face. ] I mean, I might drive myself crazy occasionally trying to figure out if there is something I'm missing, but I'm pretty sure you'd tell me if I weren't being very me anyway, right?

[leftenants]

Of course. Figure you'd do the same for me.

[At least if either one of them was missing something glaringly obvious.]

So far, though-- seems like both of us are mostly intact. Can't say I'm disappointed about that.

[procurer]

What, you wouldn't have been happier if I'd forgotten you completely?

[ He's teasing her now, the smile playing over his lips just a faint curve, one corner hooked up higher than the other as he leans his elbow on the table. ]

[leftenants]

[Come on, Hawley.]

I think you know me better than that. [She smirks in turn, offering a brief shrug.] Otherwise, I don't think you would've kept on trying as long as you did.

[procurer]

Maybe. I dunno. I can be pretty stubborn about some things. And you're still the same person that attracted me the first time around.

[ Hinting that he would have been doomed regardless of his memories. Which was probably true. he'd been drawn to her the moment he'd laid eyes on her. ]

[leftenants]

Don't think circumstances would have made a difference?

[It's an honest curiosity, and she raises an eyebrow as she considers that. She doesn't think it would change things for her, either. In fact, without her memories, things might have been less complicated-- but she's grateful to have them.]

[procurer]

Circumstances always make a difference.

[ There's something definite in the way he phrases that, taking another bite of his Thai food as he meets her gaze across the table. ]

But in the long run? Maybe not. Maybe we'd still be right back here. Who knows. Maybe we'd be having pizza instead.

[leftenants]

That's some heavy talk for a first date.

[But she smiles, and a part of her knows that the date itself is something of a formality. It's their first, sure, but you dated to get to know a person. They already knew each other plenty, although she's sure there's more that he's either never shown or she's never cared to look into, if only to force herself to keep a healthy distance. Attachment was always tricky. Even moreso when it was your sister's ex.]

I think I like where we ended up.

[procurer]

Yeah, well. You and I never do things the normal way, do we?

[ He lifts his take out container in a playful toast to her. ]

Yeah? See now. That wasn't so hard to admit, was it?

[leftenants]

Don't make me regret it.

[But she's teasing, mostly, and lifts her own container to meet his in a makeshift toast.]

I just like to take my time. Be thorough about things. Guess we'll see if it was worth the wait?

[procurer]

[ Great word choice there, Mills. Nick smirks, mischief lighting in his gaze. ] Considering I also enjoy taking my time and being very thorough, I think it will be.

[leftenants]

Walked right into that one, didn't I.

[She'll own up to it, at least.]

[procurer]

You do make a useful habit of it, on occasion. [ His smile is downright roguish but the look in his eyes is all warm affection. ] I'm not complaining, mind.

[leftenants]

[She snorts.]

Of course you're not. I don't think I've ever seen you summon up the willpower to pass up that kind of opportunity.

[But it comes out affectionate on her end, too, rather than critical-- a far cry from the tone she would have used a year earlier. And as long as she's being genuine:]

Thanks, Hawley. For tonight, and for being even more stubborn than I am.

[procurer]

[ He gives her a smile that's all fondness and toasts her with his take-out container. ]

Any time, Mills. Any time.

[leftenants]

[Her smile hitches wider, and she lifts her own take-out container to toast him in return, fork and all. /scene?]
