[ The castle can be a happening place, even on more mundane days. This log is for random interactions over the course of these few months. Because not everyone is into parties, ok. Characters who are not currently squired in may also post, as their characters are living in the castle awaiting their ceremonies.  This takes place after the Knights have returned from Dimitris' wedding.

Oh, now I get it. You flew all the way back here just to bust my chops in person.

Of course not. [But it does feel good to have their banter back in his life. He gives Shelby another scratch behind the ears.] You hungry?

Are you asking me, or the dog?

[He finally straightens up fully and gives her a look that's both exasperated and amused.]

Lois, would you like to have dinner with me?

[Clark now it sounds like a date. What are you doing.]

[ she blinks rapidly a few times, an almost imperceptible indication of the surprise that floods through her - not just at the question, but at the way she reacts to the wording of the question. it sure doesn't escape her notice that it sounds like he's asking her out, but she knows better. they're friends, at best, ones who can sometimes barely stand each other on a good day.

so she's not sure why her heart leaps up a bit at the question, but she's quick to tamp that down. ]

... I could eat.

I can handle that. You in the mood for anything in particular?

Something fried and filling?

[He sort of chuckles at that, but also wow it's nice to be back in America where the food is most often fried to perfection.]

I heard about this place with the best hot wings and bottomless baskets of fries. I've been meaning to check it out.

[He turns to head out the door but pauses.]

Do you mind driving? I uh- took a cab from the airport. [bluff 9]

Clark Kent, did you crash your rental car? I know you probably forgot, but here we drive on the right side of the road.

[He ducks his head and flashes one of those sheepish smiles that Lois tends to bring out of him.]

At least I called them fries and not "chips" right? I'm not fully converted yet.

I suppose you're not one hundred percent lost case.

I guess I'll need to keep coming back home every now and again- so you can keep me grounded. [He gestures towards the door.]

Lanes are born ready, Clark. [ she will scoot past him with a smirk ]

[He shakes his head with a smile and gives the pup one last headscratch before following Lois out.]

You know I appreciate you helping out while I've been gone, right?

It seems the least I can do after your family took me in and all back when I was banished to Green Acres.

[ she steals a glance back at him ] How's your Mom, by the way?

Good. Busy. [Talking about her is hard sometimes, because he misses her, but recognizes that they're leading very different, very important lives now.]

We keep in touch as much as we can.

A Senator's work is never done, I imagine.

It seems like you walked away from the call pretty easily.

[He stops with his hand on the handle of the passenger door.]

You really think leaving was easy?

Considering all the bad memories around here? I didn't exactly think you'd be chomping at the bit to stay. I get it. [ she says it blithely, but there's an undercurrent of something else. she can't help but feel hurt at how simple it was for him to leave, and she's not exactly sure why. she sure never let any grass grow under her feet for clark kent. why it should be the other way around, who knew, but he had seemed like such a permanent fixture of smallville that she was still getting used to the place without him ]

I'm not so sure that you do. [He says quietly, but tries to just brush it off with a little shake of his head.] You're right-- Part of me was looking for a reason to run away from my problems, but...

[He looks at her. Really looks at her.]

This place will always be home.

[loisfuckinglane]

[ gross. emotions. what is this terrible will save making her heart flutter around in her chest. ] Well... good. Because I'm not about to find somebody else to call Smallville.

[A smile slowly spreads across his face. He won't ever admit it, but that nickname is important to him, okay. It's his and no one else's.]

C'mon- let's get some food.
