The Knights fly into the port city of Cape Town in the height of summer, which luckily for them is actually a comfortable Mediterranean climate. They have come in search of Le Chien de l’Onyx to return it to it's former (and rightful) owner, the elf mage Nieulor -- it had been stolen from him in eighteenth century France and once Nieulor was freed from the Bastille, he had tracked its whereabouts across the globe trying to retrieve it. Finally, he has found it in Cape Town and the Knights have been asked to meet him for further information at the Blanched Escargot, a hole in the wall French restaurant on the waterfront.

[ off they trot the way they came? ]

[bloodrager]

[ out they go, to meet up with taradiddle and the guy they've rescued at a nearby quiet location. he immediately looks relieved at seeing the briefcase, and seems to have been healed up pretty well.

"May I?" he asks, and looks to shawn for the briefcase ]

[And Shawn will hand it over without comment, but still dramatically, stretching it out in front of him and bowing his head a bit, as though to go "my liege."]

[bloodrager]

[ they gather around a bit as the man takes the briefcase and places it on a table, putting in a combination and then unlatching the locks. there's a click as he opens the lid. the interior is almost entirely foam padding - there are only two items held securely in place by all that padding. one is a sealed letter and the other is an old slim book, whose title is in french. he looks up at them. ]

Do any of you speak French?

I do. I was in Brussels for two years, that immersion learning really works.

[ he nods and holds it up so she can read the title: Le Chien
de l’Onyx—Sa Fonction et Son Origine Mystérieuses.

indra glances to thea for a translation ]

The Onyx Dog, uh, its mysterious function and origin. [ a beat. ] It's not a real dog, is it?

[bloodrager]

[ he shakes his head, opening to an illustration of a stone fetish shaped like a dog.

"The book was written by Duc de Rouen, a survivor of the French revolution, and printed in 1802 in Paris. It describes the Onyx Dog, seized from a man-creature who called himself Nieulor, who disappeared from the Bastille in 1789. The final chapters, however, discuss the object’s magical properties: that it in fact can turn into a real dog."

he snaps the book shut and fixes them with a steely eye. "I am this same Nieulor. I came here to recover my property - this Onyx Dog. It seems I may be in need of some assistance, and I would be willing to pay for your aid." ]

[ thea brushes off the offer of payment. ]

Wynn sent us. [ a beat. ] We'll help you get back Sirius.

[ names the dog for him, it's fine. ]

Yep. What do you know about the people who have it?

[The more information they have to start with the better.]

[ "It is in the hands of a man named Vincent Lastrode. He purchased the dog and the manual at separate auctions. I believe he's used that information to discover how to summon the dog already. I intend to set up a meeting with him to deliver this manuscript, and in so doing, reclaim my dog. It's said he is never seen in public anymore without a faithful pet at his side. In case things go... sideways, I would appreciate your assistance." ]

[Shawn nods his agreement, because this sounds easy enough.]

So we're your bodyguards. We should pick up some sunglasses and fake ear comms.

[bloodrager]

Why would we want fake ears?

No, not fake ears. The little earpieces that go in your ears, with the spiral chord and the ...

[A beat.]

Never mind. We should just go with the sunglasses.

[bloodrager]

[ "Then I shall call and arrange the meeting for tomorrow morning. Will you reconvene with me then? There is a park downtown. That seems public enough." ]
