[ The quiet village of Stenskind is on edge when the Knights arrive. It has a small town vibe, but isn't without its modern amenities. However, there are visible signs of recent trouble - not a lot of people out and about, some signs of burned buildings, traffic signs bent over or pulled out by the roots. Danish police walk the streets, keeping an eye out, and keeping a close eye on the forest line at the village's edge. ]

[we'll say he's been hanging in the back listening and trying not to draw attention to himself. the ill-fitting hoodie covering his horns is probably doing the opposite.] Hope they aren't suspicious of everything from the forest. But that sounds good.

Good. [he will turn to Deryn] You speak their language, yes? Why don't you lead the way for speaking to them?

[he motioned to a pair of policemen who were approaching as they patrolled the streets]

I can! I learned it before English.

[ he replied far to happily, moving up to step beside Baal.]

Excuse me, a moment of your time please.

[ the two policeman stop, smiling politely at the group with a nod. one of them, the man, who looks to be in about his late 20s, tips his hat and answers in danish. ]

Of course. Something amiss?

[theshadowspeaks]

[ Deryn smiled back at then, replying just as politely in danish. ]

Yes, me and my associates were hoping to learn more about the recent attacks on your village.

[ Looking back to Baal and the other's he switched to English.]

How do I explain what we need? I can translate for us. I asked about the attacks.

[ he exchanges looks with his female partner ]

Gruesome business, that. As long as we've lived here, I've never seen anything like it. They raided at night, hit everything they could. Seemed to be after nothing but rampant destruction.

[ Cassie thinks for a long moment, trying to remember some of the questions they needed answers to - places to start. Her attention falls on Deryn, considering he was translating. ]

Did they attack anyone in particular? Like, as a starting point? Or were there any attacks that stand out in their minds? Something maybe a little more gruesome or controlled than the others?

[ She's not sure if those are even good questions since they'd said it looked like they weren't doing anything other than being destructive, but she's trying. She'll just look at everyone else to see if people might have a better phrasing for what she said. ]

[ he frowns a bit, but his partner says:

"They seemed to be mostly businesses, I suppose? Not sure how much of a pattern there was at all, or where it started. They came out of the woods at several places at once." ]

[and he's listening to all this, and then leans to Deryn]

Before this started in earnest, what would happen if or when they came to the village?

[ she replies: ]

They very rarely did. But on the off chance, it was mostly to try to trade with the local store owners. Most of them were confused by this at first, but we got used to it.

[theshadowspeaks]

[ Deryn keeps translating for both sides. Sounding all to happy to do so.]

[he thinks a bit before asking]

Have you heard of anything in town happening against them? Perhaps rumors of some locals or outsiders going to them and instigating a problem that has now become yours?

[ they shake their head. ]

Nothing that we've heard of. Most people around here know to steer clear.

[ thea is listening, taking in the details as deryn translates for them, wondering what the common feeling is among the townspeople, trying to get a read on how the police are leaning. (sense motive 14) ]

[theshadowspeaks]

Has no one ever tried to seek a peaceful middle ground with them?

[ Deryn himself asked, looking to his team mates to let them know what he asked. Being an outsider himself he wonders if it was a misunderstanding.]

[behindcloseddoors]

[ thea gets the feeling that they are off-put by this chance in the usual routine, that they'd prefer to keep things as they used to be with limited contact with the bugbears in general. ]

We've tried, or at least, some of the officials have. No luck. It seemed better for everyone not to push.

[and he will nod, looking at the group to see if they have any other questions for the police, but he feels that he's gotten pretty much what he expected. Perhaps the townspeople would be a bit looser on their tounges with the gossip]

Well, thank you for your time! We very thankful your help.

[ He spoke just as cheerful to the officer before looking back to Baal and the other's, and switching back to English.]

Well, where to now?

Now we find out the local gossip. [he looked around, and then looked at the group] Not to sound like a pirate, but let's go to the local bar and see what we can find out, unless any of you think somewhere else would be a better place for information?

Bar sounds like the best place to me. Loose tongues and all that.

Then the bar we will go. [and he will look, licking his lips a moment and then head towards a bar that looks the most like a place he'd want to go to]

[ there's actually several bars around, ranging from the seedy to the cheerful tavern looking kind of place ]

[the seedy one of course. He used to be a pirate after all]

[ Deryn follows along closely.]

[ seedy bar it is! the place is really damn dark, with only a few foggy tiny slits of windows. the place is steadily populated enough with apparent locals and regulars, who don't even look up when the door opens. it's mostly men, mostly middle-aged or older. ]

[ Moving along close behind Baal, Deryn peered around the room, while listening for anything interesting being said. (Listen Check: 15) ]

[ a lot of it is in the local tongue, but he does hear two old salts throw out 'bugbear' in english, the only word that stands out that he understands ]

[ cool cool cool thea feels out of place here and as such she sticks close to cassie because clearly the young women should team up. she doesn't catch the bugbear comment, alas. ]

[ Cassie is all about sticking close to Thea. This feels like the start of a campy horror movie and she's not about it. Cassie also misses the bugbear comment, but is 100% in support of not sticking around this place super long. ]

[well sorry ladies, because Baal is going to head for the bar and order a beer, because you know, blending in helps keep people from staring, and then looks at the rest of them]

What does everyone want?

I'm fine, [ thea chirps, waving her hand dismissively. none for her thank u. she peers around looking for anything out of place. (spot 18) ]

[ there's nothing much to see, unfortunately. everyone seems to be just enjoying their drinks and in quiet conversation ]

[ Deryn caught the few mentions of Bugbear and moved from Baal to move over to the old salt's table, keeping his hoodie up to keep how pale he is hidden, speaking in his best danish. ]

Excuse me, may I ask about the bugbears?

Damn things. [ one man instantly grumbles ] Can't stay on their own land. Animals.

[Baal will just sit back then, keeping his back to the bar and sipping his drink, keeping his eyes and ears open]
