Hasmed's announcement does not brook any rebuttal: all Knights are recalled to the Castle, where they must remain until the Section Heads and Jack Chessing have spoken about the events in Los Angeles that have left the Knighthood without their usual leader.

The entire Los Angeles area is now covered with a dark miasma that has interfered with any signals that might be sent out from phones, etc., leaving the whole world wondering what exactly is happening down there. Final images showed horrendous monsters, a panic of citizens, looting and violence from humans and Shadowkind alike.

Hasmed has warned of extra magical wards on the castle, and anyone arriving will immediately take notice of one very prominent one: above the entire roof of the excessively large building hovers a black and red sigil in the air, a pentagram in a circle surrounded by runes or words in an unknown language, stretching for miles.

[ the jedi are gone but she has a lightsaber. ]

Misplaced, [ jyn offers. that's what she is. a girl with a lightsaber stuck on a planet with zero reasonable space flight technology (but also dvr, which is amazing?)

her hand comes up to tangle in her necklace. what is she? a girl raised as a warrior with no war to fight? ]

You too, it sounds like.

[ she slows, lowers the saber and looks at jyn. ]

What do you know about the Jedi?

They're dead. Exterminated when I was a child.

[ a frown flutters across her expression. ] Even the Guardians of the Whills have nothing to guard anymore.

Guardians of the Whills?

[ that's more than she's gotten from ... well, anyone thus far. ]

They protected the Temple of the Kyber on Jedha, but the Empire striped it bare. [ her grip tightens against the crystal, feeling the edges of it press into her palm, thumbnail catching on the aurebesh etchings. ]

Jedha City was sacred to the Jedi once upon a time, sacred to the pilgrims that followed the Force. [ she swallows down her unresolved, conflicted feelings about the force, swallows past the bitter grief of watching the destruction of the city. ] The city is gone now.

What was in the temple? Why was it sacred?

[ she flounders, desperate. ]

The kyber. [ she gestures to the lightsaber, finally letting her hand fall to from her own crystal. ] Kyber crystals are what powered Jedi lightsabers.

[ it's strange that the girl with the lightsaber knows nothing of jedi, but jyn guesses that after time maybe even the stories and religion itself died out. ]

[ she studies the saber hilt, thoughtful. she'd always figured, mechanically, it must have some rhyme or reason to what went on inside, but she'd hardly put thought into it. ]

Kyber.

[ it's an unfamiliar word. lost to generations, probably. she looks back up. ]

[ jyn shrugs, feeling ...odd, to be thanked. maybe it feels odd because the residual guilt. her father used kyber crystals to power the death star. ]

You don't fight like you were trained with a sword.

Until I got this, I had a quarterstaff.

[ she clips it back onto her belt. ]

But a quarterstaff won't block another lightsaber.

No, I doubt much would.

[ the small, innocent part of her buried deep under the destruction of too many planets and too much loss wishes rey would keep the lightsaber out, but. it's too small and no such hope is voiced. ]

Only problem with that is you'd have to be front line.

[ admittedly plowing through people, cutting off limbs and shit, but. danger, will robinson. ]

I don't mind it.

[ she fights her own fights more than other people's, and it worked fine for those. ]

But I have a blaster, for when I do.

[ jyn's been on the front lines too many times, she wants to rest, but honestly why. she has no reason to stay back, no family to go back to, she's alone again. literally nothing to lose.

even if it sits wrong with her, for some reason she can't articulate. there is no doubt that whatever they're fighting is evil, she'd watched the news with finn, but the way the sections heads have reacted...

it feels like the dissolution of the senate. ]

Good, [ jyn says absently, nodding. ] That's good.

[ she abandons pretense. ]

Why do you know so much about the Jedi?

My mother told me stories when I was young.

[ she's not pathetic enough to say that she's nobody, but she doesn't think jyn erso went down in any history data file. ]

I was born during the Clone Wars.

The clone wars. That was — [ math. ] More than fifty years ago.

[ jyn shrugs like... idk what you expect from me, son ]

I've aged well. [ dry as a fucking bone ]

I only meant ... I didn't realize the Veil worked that way.

[ lips pursing, a fleeting apologetic look crosses her face. ]

Poe told me the Death Star was destroyed right when I arrived.

[ so jyn has known for quite some time. she blames the force. ]

I'm surprised he remembers that.

He might like lived through it. [ she shrugs, idle and not... really concerned. maybe he had a history boner.

anyway what she means is: poe's old. jyn's a generation gone and is still closer in age to rey and finn. ]

Maybe.

[ she's not doing the math. ]

But his memory's spotty.

He told me that, too. Doubt he was a spy before. [ that's wry, her mouth twisting into something so small it couldn't be a smile but there is a fondness to it. ]

[ she's clearly missing something. ]

He's something of a chatterbox. [ it is unimportant really. ] I'll let you get back to your training.
