Hasmed's announcement does not brook any rebuttal: all Knights are recalled to the Castle, where they must remain until the Section Heads and Jack Chessing have spoken about the events in Los Angeles that have left the Knighthood without their usual leader.

The entire Los Angeles area is now covered with a dark miasma that has interfered with any signals that might be sent out from phones, etc., leaving the whole world wondering what exactly is happening down there. Final images showed horrendous monsters, a panic of citizens, looting and violence from humans and Shadowkind alike.

Hasmed has warned of extra magical wards on the castle, and anyone arriving will immediately take notice of one very prominent one: above the entire roof of the excessively large building hovers a black and red sigil in the air, a pentagram in a circle surrounded by runes or words in an unknown language, stretching for miles.

[Toby wipes her mouth again, grimacing, and sits up.]

That's never happened before. Apparently you're descended from a bottle of weapons grade hot sauce.

[He super duper doesn't want to leave, because he's pretty worried and freaked out by this whole thing, but nods.]

I'll be right back. [He doesn't keep a coffee pot in their room, so he's gonna run down to the kitchen to start some.]

[She loves you, Andrew, but she needs half a second to deal with this before she has a mental breakdown and being fawned over ain't gonna help.]

Come on. The bathroom's over here.

[They both needed water for different reasons.

She pushes open the bathroom door, turns on the faucet, and gestures to the cups near the sink.]

They're clean.

[She's just gonna turn on the water in the bathtub to rinse her arm off over here.]

I was just drinking your blood. It's probably a little late to start worrying about germs now.

[But she nods gratefully and goes over to the sink. She swirls the first few sips in her mouth and spits it out to wash the taste out, then fills the cup again and takes a long drink. She needs to clean herself up too, but washing the blood out of her mouth is more important. Usually blood lends her strength, whether its hers or someone else's. Right now? Not so much.]

Something was blocking me from reading your blood. [She frowns and turns towards Bo, still sipping from her water, though more slowly now.] It burned me.

[Andrew moves as quick as his long legs will carry him, flying into the kitchens and getting a pot of water boiling. Thankfully there's some state of the art coffee makers around this place, so it doesn't take long for him to be on his way back with two giant travel mugs full of coffee and some sugar packets crammed into his pockets.

He'll be back in a minute. Carry on.]

[She silently hopes that Andrew hurries because she's kind of an internal mess at the moment and just faking her way through it.]

The same thing happened when Ana tried to check on the baby ages ago. Now I don't know if he was the one being blocked at all or if it was always me.

Well, I can check that too, though I'd understand if you don't want to bleed your baby. Especially since I'm guessing it's going to just be more of the same.

[She's still frowning. She isn't exactly naturally gifted when it comes to detective work. She's just stubborn and good at shaking things until answers come out. But she has one trick that usually works.

Having it fail her is extremely disconcerting.]

We need to find out why you're being blocked. And who's doing it. Then we can figure out how to get around it.

I don't exactly want to put you through that again, either.

[But yeah, she's guessing it's not gonna have a different outcome.]

I don't even know where to start with that. I mean, I came through the Veil. Who would know or even care that would bother here?

Don't worry about me. I bounce back fast.

[And it'll be easier if she's expecting it. She honestly wants to try again with Bo's blood even, but she figures she should get more information first.]

Do you have any memories from before you came through the Veil?

That's good at least.

[Means she doesn't have to feel as guilty about worrying about herself and her kid a little more at this point.

She shakes her head.]

Not really, just from a couple of days before I crossed over. A bunch of other fae had tracked me down because I couldn't control my powers. They filled me in on what I was, the world I was supposed to be a part of, and said they'd help me learn to deal with being, well, me. Clearly that didn't happen because I ended up on this side of the Veil instead with barely anything more than what I already knew. [She sighs.] I know my parents must have ditched me at some point, probably when I was really little, since no one seemed to know who I was or who they were, and I guess that's a big no-no.

So it might not even be something from this world. [GREAT. GOOD. She'd hate it if this were too easy.]

That's what I'm guessing, anyway. I might not actually be human, but that doesn't mean I understand a whole lot about the supernatural yet.

Too bad these things never come with a guide book, huh? [She gives a half smile.] I found out fairly recently that I'm Dochas Sidhe, and not Daoine Sidhe as I'd always thought. It... explained a lot. But it also meant I got a whole lot of blood magic abilities I never knew to even try.

[Here is Andrew, fifteen minutes late with... well, it's not Starbucks. It's just black coffee and some assortments of sugar and creamer options.]

I didn't know what you liked so... [He hands Toby the travel mug and starts piling the rest of the things on his desk.]

You okay? [He looks at Bo, then Toby.] Both of you?

[Bo gives Andrew a grateful, but somewhat forced smile as he comes back in.]

We're not hurt, babe.

[She sighs.]

Something blocked her magic. It burned her.

[Just like before.]

[She entirely ignores the sugar and creamer in favor of swigging half the coffee in one gulp. Finally, her mouth tastes less like blood and fire and more like coffee.]

I'm going to find out what, though. [She raises the cup again, nodding towards Andrew.] This is perfect.

[Andrew is glad that his coffee run was helpful, at least.]

So it wasn't the baby? [He's sort of relieved because yay their kid isn't going to kill them in their sleep probably (he watches a lot of bad horror movies okay). But he doubles back to being worried because that means it's something about Bo's heritage and that's not really any better.]

Can you do that? Find out what it is, I mean.

I don't know. It might be both of us. We share the same blood, after all.

[Which makes it a her family thing instead of a their baby thing. Too bad Caeden is under both of those umbrellas.]

I can certainly try. [She doesn't like making promises. Especially not now, when she doesn't know if she'll even live long enough to learn anything useful. Potential apocalypses are fun like that.]

If there's anything in the lab that might help, just let me know. [Not that he knows how much mixing tech and magic would work for this, but he's got some connections and can at least offer them.]

I have no problem offering up blood samples to the knights scientists, either. Whatever will help.

That's probably a good idea. It's not like any of them will be dumb enough to drink the blood. [Toby takes another swig of coffee, then stands up.] Ugh, I'm gonna have to do research. But maybe I can find a record of something like this having happened before.

If you let me know what to look for, I can probably help with that. [He's pretty good with those sort of deep dives, after all.]

I appreciate this a lot, Toby. Seriously.
