Hasmed's announcement does not brook any rebuttal: all Knights are recalled to the Castle, where they must remain until the Section Heads and Jack Chessing have spoken about the events in Los Angeles that have left the Knighthood without their usual leader.  

The entire Los Angeles area is now covered with a dark miasma that has interfered with any signals that might be sent out from phones, etc., leaving the whole world wondering what exactly is happening down there.  Final images showed horrendous monsters, a panic of citizens, looting and violence from humans and Shadowkind alike.  

Hasmed has warned of extra magical wards on the castle, and anyone arriving will immediately take notice of one very prominent one: above the entire roof of the excessively large building hovers a black and red sigil in the air, a pentagram in a circle surrounded by runes or words in an unknown language, stretching for miles.

What do you mean? Like in a big, existential kind of way?

I mean why the gods sent us here. To this world.

Yeah, that's what I thought. [She lets out a big sigh because that's heavy to think about.] I don't know. Maybe? Does that mean someone or something used the Veil like a distress signal that doesn't understand what consent is?

My people believe that's Sehanine's domain, in some ways. She guards the Veil - sometimes she sends people through it on purpose.

Is she also in charge of who gets to keep their memories?

Theoretically? I suppose if anyone is.

Gotta say, she's kind of the worst, then. As someone who came through only remembering their name, it fucking sucks.

How do you know that your memories might not have sucked more?

Maybe they did, but they were mine and I should get to decide if I want them or not.

There's a lot of things we don't get to decide in life.

Sure. And I'd be just as pissed if some asshole god was picking and choosing those against my will. [She's equal opportunity in that regard]

How is it any different from it being the random whims of the universe?

Say you get struck by lightning and end up in the Light wing- random whim of the universe. Say I shoot you with lightning right now and put you there- active decision by me. I'm gonna guess you'll be a little more angry about one than the other.

I don't like anyone making my decisions for me. Gods or not.

Gods aren't exactly like you or I, however, are they? Their motivations are on an entirely different level.

I don't really do the whole... reverence thing. So I don't hold them to different standards. [s h r u g]

It isn't about reverence, even. It's that the power they possess is so far and above anything that we can even conceive of, that it's impossible for us to understand the way they see the world, or why they act as they do.

Which goes both ways. The difference between us is that you seem to want to believe those reasons are good ones. I choose to believe they're assholes. Maybe one day we'll find out which one of us is right.

I see it less as a conception of good or bad. I think their very way of perceiving morality is something we cannot grasp. It lies beyond us. Do you think it fair for ants to consider us, er... what you said, for stepping upon them from time to time?
