chapter five ♔ it'll be a day like this one when the sky falls down

the blues - switchfoot
WHO || The Knights
WHAT || Failboat returns from the disaster in LA as the Knighthood goes on lockdown
WHERE || The castle, London
WHEN || Directly after this, Fall 2017
HOW || Actionspam

Hasmed's announcement does not brook any rebuttal: all Knights are recalled to the Castle, where they must remain until the Section Heads and Jack Chessing have spoken about the events in Los Angeles that have left the Knighthood without their usual leader.

The entire Los Angeles area is now covered with a dark miasma that has interfered with any signals that might be sent out from phones, etc., leaving the whole world wondering what exactly is happening down there.  Final images showed horrendous monsters, a panic of citizens, looting and violence from humans and Shadowkind alike.

Hasmed has warned of extra magical wards on the castle, and anyone arriving will immediately take notice of one very prominent one: above the entire roof of the excessively large building hovers a black and red sigil in the air, a pentagram in a circle surrounded by runes or words in an unknown language, stretching for miles.

[ This is the social log for post-LA lockdown.  Failboat must complete the top log before being allowed to tag outside of it. ]

You're David Levin, aren't you?

[ she looks him over and tbh he doesn't look like much. at least, not by her nation's standards. rough around the edges and bulky — markers of a life spent in physical labor. ]

I've heard you knew the sorceress who repaired the castle after it was invaded.
generaldavideus: ([david] seriously?)

[personal profile] generaldavideus 2017-12-01 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Amara?

[So the answer to that is yes.]

Yeah, I knew her. Are you looking for her?

[Because she isn't here and he's been told not to go looking, even if he does kinda want to.]

[personal profile] pilgrimages 2017-12-02 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
For people who knew her, at least. It's quite the feat of magic.
generaldavideus: ([david] you're an idiot)

[personal profile] generaldavideus 2017-12-02 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, she was quite a powerful sorceress.

[He pauses for a moment, because he isn't sure if he should really talk about this, but it's not like Zara could stand a chance against her, really. No offense, Zara.]

She's Homo Magi.

I've heard legends about the Homo Magi. Their blood was said to run with pure magic itself. They're a fairytale.

[ but apparently more than that. ]

Lots of things are fairy tales. Doesn't make them any less real.

[Says the guy who's had the bulk of his missions with ACTUAL FAIRY TALE CHARACTERS over the past four years. And who hung in a world with gods.]

They hid themselves away from the world for a long time due to a curse on their people.

[personal profile] pilgrimages 2017-12-06 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
What kind of curse?
generaldavideus: (Default)

[personal profile] generaldavideus 2017-12-11 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
A love curse. The minute a member of the Homo Magi laid eyes on a human they instantly fell in love with them.
pilgrimages: (Default)

[personal profile] pilgrimages 2017-12-23 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Who would lay a curse like that on a whole population?
generaldavideus: (pic#9114285)

[personal profile] generaldavideus 2017-12-26 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
A god.

[Because Poseidon is a dickwad.]

A god with a bruised ego is always going to take retribution for that far exceeding what he actually should.

What makes you say that? Where I come from, the gods are seen as benevolent. It's their followers you have to watch out for.
generaldavideus: (Default)

[personal profile] generaldavideus 2018-01-02 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Not all gods are like the ones where you're from.

[He just wants to put that out there, because the Hellenistic gods sure aren't benevolent.]

The Hellenistic deities are incredibly petty and self-centered. They're pretty much infamous for how they decide to arbitrarily punish mortals.

[personal profile] pilgrimages 2018-01-02 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
But only the deserving are punished.

[ right ??? that's normal, david. that's the way of things. ]

[personal profile] generaldavideus 2018-01-02 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
[His face says "not so much."

There's a moment where he debates how to provide context for that - he could make it personal and talk about the curses he's seen with his own eyes, but given that those stories involve knights in the castle, he decides to stick with the myths.]

There was a woman named Medusa who worked in the temple of Athena. She was one of Athena's most loyal followers and incredibly beautiful and Poseidon decided he wanted her. Medusa refused, Poseidon took matters into his own hands and forced her to be with him on the stairs of Athena's altar room.

Athena, furious with what had taken place, punished Medusa for defiling her temple. She turned her hair to snakes, gave her scales and claws, and was said to be so fearsome in appearance that anyone she laid eyes on would turn to stone. Medusa retreated to a cluster of caves near Athens, where for the rest of her days, her only company was a statue garden of fools who thought they could defeat her or wanted to sneak a peak at the monster she had become.

[He knows that there are other ways to read the myth, ways that place Athena in a better light, but at the end of the day, David has enough experience with the gods and their inaction on behalf of the people they claim to love that he isn't so sure he believes that it's possible to read it another way.

If Athena truly wanted to protect her follower, she could have stood up to Poseidon. She could have banned him from her temple when he began pursuing Medusa in the first place. He didn't understand why this woman's suffering was a necessary cost. And he still feels that way, even with her as his patron.]

[ she looks

visibly confused by 'forced her to be with him'

because the thing about coming from a society where rape isn't a violent act used to keep women in line is that euphemisms are hard to come by and infrequent. she's been here long enough, though, that she gets there. it's just ... second nature, instead of first.

and then she has the good sense to look horrified.
]

Anyone who would violate one of the clergy is no god. Poseidon is a monster. And Athena blamed her daughter for the act?
generaldavideus: ([david] alright calm down)

[personal profile] generaldavideus 2018-01-02 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
[David nods, shifting to lean back against the counter a bit.]

Poseidon was technically her uncle. He was one of the three most powerful members of the pantheon. Some people say that Athena did what she did because she was forced to - the rest of the pantheon wouldn't hold Poseidon accountable and being a chaste goddess, Athena needed to punish someone.

They say that Athena did what she did to protect Medusa from something worse, and sealed her cave from women so that Medusa's curse wouldn't effect them but ... it's still blaming the victim. Medusa lived the rest of her life alone, considered a monster by the rest of world. Poseidon stayed the god of the sea and probably did the same to others.

[He holds out his hands in front of him and shrugs.]

I don't think trying to "spin it" in Athena's favor actually works on that one.

[ evident in the way her nostrils flare and her brow furrows is the fact that this is

really putting zara on edge.

like this is the most egregious of culture shocks where built into the foundation of one of this world's primary and foundational religions — she's read enough literature and art, now, to at least recognize the gods in passing, if not be familiar with their stories — is so steeped in

women's total powerlessness :')

lmao she's screaming inside.
]

And these are the gods who took away the Homo Magi's autonomy too. [ she shakes her head, folding her arms around herself and just really. needing a self-hug right now. ] Disgusting.
generaldavideus: (pic#9114358)

[personal profile] generaldavideus 2018-01-03 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Which is why we helped them.

[Or at least why David helped them. Amara deserved to be free of being cursed to love someone she didn't truly have feelings for. And now, he hopes that wherever she is, she's okay.]

But they're rid of it now.
pilgrimages: (Default)

[personal profile] pilgrimages 2018-01-03 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
[ she smiles, a flickering thing that's genuinely grateful to david even though they were people she didn't even know. it falters then and she says, ]

Only the Homo Magi. How many others in this world have been cursed by the gods and lacked such a champion?
generaldavideus: (pic#9114364)

[personal profile] generaldavideus 2018-01-10 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
[He gives a small shrug.]

I don't know. They've kind of fallen out of favor with the Veil and the Faerun deities taking a more prominent position in things, as well as Christianity, so I don't know if there are any left that are still alive.

[personal profile] pilgrimages 2018-01-28 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
If you were them, wouldn't that only make you more spiteful, more embittered to a world that had forgotten you? I would lash out more.
generaldavideus: (Default)

[personal profile] generaldavideus 2018-01-29 03:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know. Poseidon's the only one I've had any interaction with, so I can't really tell you what the rest of them want. But from what I can tell, Poseidon is gone.
