War of Hearts - Russell Taylor
WHO ||Dean, Rose, Sam, Alainn [closed]
WHAT || Dean & Rose spontaneously tie the knot
WHERE || The French Quarter 24/7 Wedding Chapel, New Orleans
WHEN || A couple weeks post LA, after the Rafael rescue (2017)
HOW || Actionspam (single thread)
[ No one probably ever thought this day would come, probably least of all the bride and groom.
But a surprise proposal (of sorts) from Rose has led them both here, as the clock clicks close to midnight, to one of the only 24/7 wedding chapels there is, conveniently located right here in New Orleans, where they happened to make the decision. Neither one of them seems to want a big wedding, so much as they just want to get married already, although everyone is a little concerned that Dean is going to develop cold feet as the time draws nearer. With a nat 20 will save though, he's actually eerily calm about the whole thing as Sam drives him to the place and they fill out the paperwork, while Alainn gets Rose ready in a nearby room. Dean takes a moment to slip the guy running the place some cash money under the table not to put their name up on the public registry that they keep on their website, to at least not flagrantly advertise their location. By the time anyone traces them here from the actual signing of documents, they should be long gone. Once all that's done, Dean and Sam have a few moments alone while they go to process everything, and he steps into the chapel room, walking slowly down the aisle with his hands shoved in the pockets of the suit that Alainn picked up for him and Sam talked him into actually wearing, studying the kooky decor with a pensive look on his face. ]

Listen to Bobby, Dean. [ there's a controlled nature to his voice now, but it's no less as passionate, as he reins in some of the hotheadedness that had prompted a lot of those earlier outbursts, between elena's reminder and bobby's placing himself right in the line of fire. his eyes flick to rose, addressing her comment. ]
I walked into this with my eyes wide open. And I'd do it again. [ his gaze skates across the other sam's for a moment, the implications of that hanging in the air for everyone ] I'd do it a hundred times.
But that's not the point. The point is that I get where the paranoia is coming from, Dean. I'm part of the reason you have it. But Des and Elena had nothing to do with you. None of this does.
It's just a coincidence. That, or some big ... cosmic joke. But if you keep trying to fight a one-sided war, it's not going to stay that way. I know what I'm asking sounds impossible, but I did this so that you could have a life, Dean, more than anything else. [ which each word, he grows more intense, although he still manages to a sense of control, to not shout any of it but to just lay it out flatly. ]
I came here to tell you that, so you wouldn't throw it away.
[ (diplomacy ...48). there's a moment where he seems to remember himself, and his eyes drift back towards elena, lingering there for a moment, before he admits: ]
And to say congratulations.

Rose's outburst quickly does her in, each hit feels like a bullet in her back, and she breathes out almost painfully as she turns around. She doesn't step forward, because she doesn't feel like she has the strength to move a muscle.]
I know. Believe me, Rose, there is nothing you can say that I'm not already very aware of. [That she hurt her. That she continues to hurt her. That she's done too much.
That she can't take it back.] I wasn't as strong as you were back then and for that, I'm sorry.
I tried. I tried to walk away as best I could, tried to make sure that no one followed me, to cut ties. I am not responsible for anyone else's actions, so don't blame Des' idiocy on me. He betrayed me just like he betrayed everyone else. He will pay the price for that forever.
[There's a pain there that cuts through her explanation, an old scar brought to the surface.]
You deserve to hate me, but it will eat you apart. I've seen what happens to those that let their anger and their hate take them over and I don't want that to happen to you Rose. I didn't want to be here because I knew it would only make it worse.
[Her eyes flick to Sam 1.0, before she has to look away again.]
But, I am...happy for you.

[Watch as Sam also bombs the fuck out of his will save. Is he gonna bring up the thing?
He's gonna bring up the thing.]
Are you going to stand there and tell us that Glasya showing up in Chicago was just a coincidence? Because I don't fucking think so.
[Anger that he'd kept down until now rises to the surface, but that last thing he wants is to give them the satisfaction of seeing it. He looks over at his brother, placing a hand between his shoulderblades as if that will steady him.
They're here. They're not going anywhere. These two will go back to where they came from eventually. They always do.]
It doesn't matter anyway because like she said, it keeps happening. If you think we can ignore it when you people just show up then you're delusional.

[ For years now, Rose has been holding it together through everything that's been thrown their way. From that Night in New York, right through until today she couldn't remember a time when anything had been too much. A time when she couldn't just push through, in spite of everything that had been thrown their way. From finding out about Dean's deal to learning the depth of Des's betrayal? Nothing had been able to truly penetrate her to the point of breaking... not until now. (Will Save Crit Fail.)
Every word spoken around her becomes nothing but dumb noise as the world falls away. Rose staring at Elena as, with every word that passes her lips, the walls Rose has constructed to protect herself are being ripped away and in that moment? She's not the warrior who marches into battle without fear in her eyes. She's not the one who has promised to stand by Dean through whatever gets thrown their way. She's that teenage version of herself once more and the hurt is like a visceral thing that practically tears her chest open.]
You don't get to be sorry! [ Her words a cry that's ripped from her lips as pain ripples across her features.] You don't get to show up at my fucking wedding like you have a right to be here. You don't get to say you're happy for me. [ The words were one thing, but what's worse is the tears that now stream down her face and she hates her for it. For still, even now being able to wreck her so completely that she can't breathe. Because it never went away. It never eased, not once in the last five years. It's been her constant companion and it's fueled her very existence when nothing else would or could and now it's all rushing back to the surface, as nothing Rose can say or do will hold it back.]
You were my family! I would have done anything for you and you threw it away! I needed you and you threw me away.
[ And the tears won't stop, even as she's furiously wiping at her face like she can force them to cease their endless stream. ]
You don't get to blame Des for what's happened. You could have walked away but you didn't. You didn't have to come here. But you did. You always do, whatever the hell you want and the rest of us just have to live with it.
[ It's always been that way too, from the beginning of this horrible mess they found themselves in. Precious little Elena always knew what was better for everyone else and what did it matter if she ruined lives along the way?!
She tries to breathe, to pull enough air into her lungs but emotion squeezes her chest and it's like there's not enough air, there'll never be enough air as long as she has to share it with the monster her former best friend has become.]
You're right though. [ Desperate to harden herself once more as she snatches another quick breath of air, determined to show her the contempt she deserves, even with the tears that stain her face. ] I do deserve to hate you.
[ Her shoulders shudder as she pulls in a shaky breath, only holding her composure together by the barest thread as she stares them down with a look so devoid of anything that it's hard to imagine she was ever the once lively teenager with a smart mouth and impulse control issues. But that girl was dead and buried and the one who stood before them now? She was as much here today because of them as she was in spite of them.]
If I ever see you again I'll kill you. [ Her words sounding more like a promise than a threat. ] Now get out.

You don't get to tell me what I can and cannot do. I will do and feel however I damn well please.
[Rose has been holding it together for years, which is commendable considering her circumstances.
Elena has been trying to hold it together for centuries in the midst of literal hell. Rose's words snap something inside her, and the reaction is visible and jarring (will save crit fail). Her expression goes slack, blank, and her eyes harden, as if there's nothing behind them anymore.]
If that's what you want, fine. I came here as Elena Gilbert, and you'll never have to see her again. I'll ground her into the ground and leave nothing but ashes behind. The next time you see me, I'll be the monster you seem to want so badly. You can carry around the guilt knowing that you're the one that killed the girl you used to call a friend.
[Her lips lift into a wicked smile, sharp and cruel, devoid of anything resembling joy.]
And you will see me again, because I know you'll continue to inject yourselves into every desperate situation you can find, and you and your boys love misery more than happiness. And that's where we operate, in misery and darkness. [She tilts her head, the corners of her eyes somehow sharpening (intimidate 40).] And you won't kill me, because you know exactly what will happen if you do. You want to protect those boys of yours, and there will be nothing you can do to stop what comes if you get in my way.
[She addresses Sam 1.0 without even turning her body toward him.] Take me home. Now. [Her voice is back to that commanding tone, anger burning through the sound, her hand turning up for him to take.]
That's an order, Sam.

Guilt? [ She lets out a bitter huff of laughter. ] For killing Elena Gilbert? You did that already, you just can't let go.

Even now, he's standing between the two groups squaring off, yelling at one of another and leaking their messy emotions everywhere and just.... lifts a hand to pinch the bridge of his nose as he tries to sort through this mess. ]
Alright, enough! [ He finally bellows out, his voice sharp and meant to cut through the accusations flying loose and fast between the two parties. (That's an Intimidate 26, but he's mostly trying to shut everyone up rather than.... actually be intimidating). ] Hang on a dang minute here and let me get this straight.
You. [ A finger jabbed in Dean's direction, accompanied with a narrowed gaze at the elder of the two brothers. ] Made a deal with the devil to bring your bride here back from the dead in exchange for staying hands off with the devil. And you. [ This time towards the Sam-in-a-white-suit. ] You sacrificed yourself to... what, save Dean's life? To the big guy downstairs as well, I take it?
[ Give him a moment here to make sure he was reading all this right. ]
Why are Winchesters always so dang stupid and stubborn, that's what I want to know. What made either of you think that starting to make deals with demons would end well for anyone? And why are you blaming each other for doing exactly the same thing as the other one did. Because let me guess. Sam goes back on his deal and Dean dies, but Dean goes back on his deal and Rose dies. Do I got that about right?
[ Guess who sounds pissed?
...And he's still not touching whatever drama is happening between the two women because no thank you. He did not come prepared to step into the middle of a catfight today. His boys are more than enough trouble on their own. ]

dean is a fucking mess.
sam 1.0's words clearly move him on some level, but only serve to make him look all the more conflicted and confused, because he very obviously seems to consider the possibility of the fiend telling him a truth that he doesn't know how to even begin accepting. and then the other version of sam speaks up and brings up her and dean's eyes darken a bit at the realization that shit, that's a great point, as he swings a grimace in the fiend's direction, ready to retort, when suddenly rose blows up. her righteous anger stirs a cloud over his expression as well, that's partly a heart breaking for her, partly rage at elena for what she's done, and part something much darker, and much worse, that comes from hearing rose swear to murder elena the next time she sees her.
it's clear to those who catch the way dean's eyes dart to sam at those words (anyone who gets a sense motive 25+): dean has said the exact same ones before, and has now been put in the exact position of having to decide whether to act on them or not.
there were a lot of reasons for making that deal of his, and some of them aren't ones he'll gladly admit even to himself. that doesn't mean he's powerless here and now to do anything, however, not with his divinely powered wife at his side. it doesn't seem to escape him, and he looks positively paralyzed by the situation. elena's dramatic tirade causes his eyes to widen with fear as he fails that will save against her intimidation - fear for all of those loved ones standing with him now who might be in even more danger now that elena's last thread of connection to her humanity has apparently been severed.
when elena orders sam to leave, he looks desperate for a moment, to figure out what to say to stop sam from disappearing once more. to find a way to end this, one that he can actually bring himself to live with. but no solution comes, and then bobby is barking at them again and his head snaps to look at him with panicked, lost eyes (will save 21) as bobby proceeds to read them the at least partially deserved riot act. when he finally finds his voice, he sounds like his throat is dry as a desert, the words practically croaked. ]
It ain't the same, Bobby. He can't go back.
He's not human anymore. Neither of them are.

Goodbye Dean.
[ his last words are directed to his double, who he fixes with a steady look ] Take care of him.
[ with that, he acquiesces to elena's orders without a fight, whatever rebellious streak he'd been exhibiting moments ago curbed by the direct order and the harsh words dropped from the lips of the Queen. he raises a hand and snaps, causing flames to begin to circle them once more around the ground in rapid succession, flames that suddenly explode upwards, creating a curtain around them that disperses just as suddenly into wisps of smoke that smells of sulfur, the only thing besides the scorched marks on the ground and in the hearts of the gathered that speaks of the scene that just occurred. ]

Thank goodness for Bobby.
His twin address him directly then, and says the one thing that they can both agree on without question.]
You don't have to worry about that.
[A small consolation, he's sure, but it would have meant a lot to him.
And then they're gone, in a display of fire and smoke, and he stares at the marks left behind on the pavement for a moment before he looks over at the others, his expression one more of concern than anything else.]

If that were all of it then maybe she could have walked away from this feeling in tact in some way, but it was never that simple. Never that easy and it’s almost painful to see the way the oppressive weight she’d managed to shed for just a short while this night, returns with a vengeance. Her shoulders dropping as her fingers curl in towards her palm. Leaving crescent shaped marks as she uses the physical pain to keep her from sinking. (Str 16)]
Let’s go. [ Her words sounding hollow as with a final shake of her head at everything, she forces herself to look away from the spot where Elena and Sam had just been. ]

When he'd come to this city on what he thought was a wild goose chase, he hadn't expected to find this.
But after a moment, he turns back around to solemnly face the wedding party. His gaze rests on Rose for a moment, taking in her posture and expression and a flicker of understanding sympathy crosses his face before he glances at Dean, taking in his state with the same quiet assessment. Sam gets a sideways glance but also a hand on his shoulder, Bobby giving the younger brother a gentle squeeze as he huffs out a deep, tired breath. ]
Yeah. We should go. I think we all have a lot to talk about.

Though she had no Divine power of her own, nothing to counter the unholiness they had just been witness to, that wouldn't stop her from trying. It sure as hell wouldn't stop her from being there for her friends.]
Aye, let's make a stop at that liquor store down the road a ways. I'm feeling a wee bit parched suddenly.

Looks like the honeymoon is over. [ there's a lot packed into that, and his gaze holds rose, full of something midway between an apology and a shared understanding. ] Come on.
