War of Hearts - Russell Taylor
WHO ||Dean, Rose, Sam, Alainn [closed]
WHAT || Dean & Rose spontaneously tie the knot
WHERE || The French Quarter 24/7 Wedding Chapel, New Orleans
WHEN || A couple weeks post LA, after the Rafael rescue (2017)
HOW || Actionspam (single thread)
[ No one probably ever thought this day would come, probably least of all the bride and groom.
But a surprise proposal (of sorts) from Rose has led them both here, as the clock clicks close to midnight, to one of the only 24/7 wedding chapels there is, conveniently located right here in New Orleans, where they happened to make the decision. Neither one of them seems to want a big wedding, so much as they just want to get married already, although everyone is a little concerned that Dean is going to develop cold feet as the time draws nearer. With a nat 20 will save though, he's actually eerily calm about the whole thing as Sam drives him to the place and they fill out the paperwork, while Alainn gets Rose ready in a nearby room. Dean takes a moment to slip the guy running the place some cash money under the table not to put their name up on the public registry that they keep on their website, to at least not flagrantly advertise their location. By the time anyone traces them here from the actual signing of documents, they should be long gone. Once all that's done, Dean and Sam have a few moments alone while they go to process everything, and he steps into the chapel room, walking slowly down the aisle with his hands shoved in the pockets of the suit that Alainn picked up for him and Sam talked him into actually wearing, studying the kooky decor with a pensive look on his face. ]

[ Bobby jerks a thumb in Alainn's direction when she speaks from behind him and she'd been so quiet this whole time, he'd halfway expected she'd fallen asleep back there. Not that he objected to someone who didn't run their mouth all the time - it was a refreshing change, actually.
But he's still studying Rose with curiosity, thinking all this over. ]
...Why do I get the feeling that you kissin' shadows is very different from what the rest of us are busy being?
[ Also being shadow-anything doesn't sound like something that would holy light in his book, but what does he know? The rules in this world are completely different from the one he'd come from - he's still trying to make sense of it most days. ]

It's not like being Shadowkind. [Grimacing as if to foreshadow the turn this conversation will take.] Resurrection isn't supposed to be possible where I came from.
[ There's a renewed tension that hums through her body and it might be clear now, why she's never broached this subject with Sam. It's clearly not one she discusses easily and yet apparently with everything that's happened tonight? Gone are the days of saying nothing. ]
Lissa was... different. [ Her eyes go out of focus as she's pulled into a memory, the sensation of it visibly rolling through her body like a crawling discomfort. ] I don't remember much. Just... the accident.
[ Gasoline. Twisted metal. Heat. Excruciating pain. ]
When I got here I knew I was Shadowkissed I just, didn't know what that meant. I could sense Vampires. See Ghosts. Generally... do things normal people aren't supposed to be able do. I didn't think much of it until Lissa showed up this side of the veil and I started hearing... a voice in my head.
[ She lifts her gaze now, brown eyes shifting from Bobby to Sam and it's almost as if she's challenging them to look at her like she's crazy. ]
Whatever happened, when she brought me back it wasn't... all the way I guess. She tied me to her instead. I could, hear her thoughts, see what she saw... feel what she felt. [ There's another flicker of her gaze, this time to Sam because. He's smart. He'll realize what all of that means.]
When she died... [ Her gaze flickers towards Dean and there's something close to an unspoken apology in her eyes before she looks away. ] It was like that tie had been cut... but then the castle was attacked and we all know how that ended.
[ Except Bobby... but do you really want to make them say it Bobby, do you. ]
The deal was to bring me back. It's not like you would have specified which version of me.
[ And it probably says a lot that for as improbable as all this sounds? It's still more believable to Rose than a God deciding to do this to her. ]

[ Another quick look at Dean before looking away again. ]
He didn't just bring me back he... changed me, from what I was before I died.

It puts everything into better context.]
So...you're saying maybe you had to be given some of Lissa's power to come back without her?
[This is...really confusing.]
Wherever it came from, it's only going to put more hurt on the things we're already fighting against. So, yeah, like they said? Pretty freaking badass. [He gives her a small, sympathetic smile.] But believe me, I know that doesn't exactly make it better when you didn't have a say in it. I get it.
[He's like the poster boy of having abilities you didn't ask for from questionable sources.]
no subject
I didn't tell him he could do anything to you, just... bring you back. [ and it's clear, what's freaking him out here, to probably almost everyone in this room, where all the people who know him best are gathered.
it's clear that he's blaming himself for giving lucifer any power over her, enough to even let this doubt in ]
no subject
And he did. [ Squeezing his hand as if that will somehow make it enough. ] Without that deal I wouldn't be here now.
[ But... that doesn't change the fact that she's different now or the fact that she feels wrong knowing that Lucifer is the reason for that. ]
I don't know. [ Shaking her head and honestly having no idea what to say to make it better. ] Maybe Sam's right... maybe it doesn't matter.

Well. I don't think that's gonna be something anyone's gonna settle tonight. I think tonight's been full enough, don't you? [ He glances back over at Sam, and then the woman still guarding the door. ] And I think the newlyweds need some alone time.
[ A pause, before he turns to fix both Dean and Rose with a vaguely exasperated and somewhat-parental look. (although that's mostly directed at Dean - he knows him better.) ]
Try to find something to do other than brood, would you?

Sam meets the gaze of his brother and his new wife briefly, making sure that's what they want.]
We won't be far if you need us.
[You know. Just in case.]

She manages a single nod for Dean before dragging her gaze from his, her focus shifting to the Claddagh ring that adorns her ring finger and it’s hard not to think of all the ways she’d dared to picture this night, only to be reminded of how it had gone completely wrong. She might want to salvage it, for both their sakes, to spite Hell and all the bullshit that people associated with it had brought into their lives but it feels stupid to tempt fate again. Just as foolish as thinking they could have had one thing just for them, to begin with. ( Will Save Crit Fail ) ]
I think they’ve done enough for one night. [ Forcing her gaze up to meet Sam’s as she casually dismisses the idea that there'd be any more trouble tonight. ] We should get some sleep anyway... Probably shouldn't stick around here any longer than we have to.
[ She just sounds... tired, as she gives Dean's hand one last squeeze before letting it go as she gets up to head back to the bed. ]

There'll be plenty of time for catching up. I'm not going anywhere - not after it took me this long to find you. Get some sleep, you two. We can start fresh in the morning. Sammy, where we going?
no subject
Front desk. We'll grab an extra room. Come on.

It was... nice meeting you. [ Under the circumstances... for which there were many, and she shares a brief look with Sam then Alainn, keeping that reassuring expression in place until she's sure she and Dean are alone.
It's only when the door closes that her shoulders slump, her fingers pushing back through her still damp hair and while she tries to find the words for Dean when she seeks him out? She just doesn't know where to start. ]

I'd have warned you ahead of schedule that most occasions tend to go this way for this family, but somehow I think you already knew that.
Still. [ he's tired, that's clear, but his focus is all on her now, trying to read how she's handling this, what she might need from him that could help them both figure out what to do with this. ] I think we were both hoping we might get lucky just this once.

The smallest glimmer of a smile pulls at the corner of her mouth and he'd see that he was right. That she'd known, perhaps even before they'd started dating that this sort of thing was just a part of the lives that they led.
He'd also see, just how much she'd allowed herself to hope that perhaps just this once, it could have been different. Her eyes close as she tries to shield him from the raw emotion that rushes to the surface, the tears she doesn't want to shed clinging to her lashes as she tries to swallow it back down. Her grip on his hand tightens, the slightest tremble of her lower lip and her chest shudders as she tries to fill her air with lungs, blinking rapidly to clear her eyes as she meets his gaze once more.
It's more than just self-pity that greets him, its a sense of sorrow, for the both of them and it takes her another moment to clear the lump from her throat, just enough to get the words out. ]
I just wanted us to have one day. [ And it would be clear that it's not about her, but the both of them. Their family, their friends. The very people who had given up so much, had been through too much. ] Just one.

Hell could take a lot from them, had done so time and time again but not this. Never the way they feel about each other and her hand squeezes his, her other rumpling the front of his shirt as her fingers curl around the material, anchoring herself to him. ]
I love you. You know that right? [ And it's more than just a simple declaration. It's a reminder that to her, it's worth it. All the shit they went through in their lives, it was worth it to be with him. ]

[ Maybe his brother and her ex-best friend had done a helluva job of ruining their wedding, but the only thing Hell ever managed to succeed in doing every time they messed with their lives? Was bringing them closer together. ]
So starting now, yeah? [ Their one day, the distance between them closing until her lips are barely a breath away from his. ] What do you think, Husband?
no subject
Screw the rest.

Maybe it’s his smile, or simply the sense of calm that comes over him but he’d see it immediately reflected in her, so much of the tension that she’d been carrying since the church, seeping out of her as they stand there together. They hadn’t been allowed a moment for what they’d done tonight to feel entirely real, but calling him her husband, being called his wife? She’d worn a lot of titles over the years; Guardian, Hunter, Knight. Before Dean, she never would have thought that Wife would be the one she was the most proud of. ]
Damn straight you are. [ Rose closing what little distance remains as she pours every ounce of emotion that wells inside of her, into the kiss she finally claims. (Dex Nat 20.) ]

There's a comfort that comes from the weight of his body, in the familiarity of his scent surrounding her. It's a reminder that every good memory she has from the last few years, is centered around the two of them, and maybe this is it? What they need to know it's going to be okay. Not for everything to go right but for the two of them to let go of everything else and simply be here, with each other. ]
I love you. [ It's not that she needs to tell him again, but that she needs to say it. To let the emotion behind those words go through her and sooth the parts she doesn't know how to heal. Her hands slip beneath the lapels of his jacket, slide over his shoulders and start to push it down his arms, Rose wanting to free him of those layers in her need to be closer to him. ]
