[Jack can't help but find it terribly impolite to go knocking on Buffy's bedroom door, no matter what the hour, so instead she received a very brief text transmission on her phone that asked her to come drop by his office at some point during the afternoon, if it was convenient. It isn't as if he doesn't have enough paperwork to keep him in there awhile.

Of course, this all involves... finding his office.]

† If she goes searching on her own: Roll a d20. A roll of a 13 or above can locate the office. Particularly high rolls mean she finds it quickly and vice versa.
† If she chooses to ask somebody, roll a d20 for a Gather Information check and put the number you got in the header of your reply, with however she approached the person she's stopping to ask.

Oh. I was just kinda thinking we'd get to that stuff when it comes up. [ A beat. ] There's protocol?

[chessing]

... Very basic, I assure you. You'll receive an invitation to your mission briefings from Wynn, myself, or, when you become a full Knight, from your section Head. Briefings are always conducted by one of those three as well. Wynn tries to assign a member from each relevant section to each mission to vary the skills of the team.

The Round Table room, where briefings are conducted, is magically protected against scrying attempts - which means other wizards or mages can't spy on anything discussed in that room from afar.

You really think he'll want us to go on missions? I mean, before we're full knights. We just got here, a-and I've never even held a sword. Or, at least, I don't think I have.

[chessing]

It's the quickest way to learn. If you don't feel comfortable with combat after initial training, you won't be asked to enter into a situation that will call for it. There's a variety of work that needs to be done in the field - not all of it's aggressive.

[slays]

Hurray for learning. [ She looks a little grim and off-put by that, because omfg seriously? But she'll deal. ]

[chessing]

If you feel uncomfortable in the field at any time, you can ask to be withdrawn.

[slays]

[ Wow, you are underestimating how prideful she is. ]

Great. I'll keep the run like a coward option in mind.

There's nothing disgraceful about recognizing one's limits.

But there's a lot disgraceful about backing down when you're needed.

Part of why you won't be going on missions without backup. There'll be plenty of other agents able to fill in as needed.

Even so ... [ She shrugs it off, looking briefly despondent, then smiling. ] Questions answered. Your duty to Wynn is fulfilled.

[chessing]

It's not about a duty. I want to ensure you're prepared for this.

[slay]

Good idea. Prepare me for experiencing things like watching my friends die in bloody combat, and staging diplomatic intervention into economic depressions caused by Shadowkind slave trade. Prepare me for witnessing that many people in that kind of pain. [ She raises her eyebrows, looking around some, expectant. ]

How do you plan to do that, exactly?

[ She shakes her head. ] I'll figure it out as I go. You've done everything you need to do right now. I can take on the castle, and the training, and the ... being here.

[chessing]

No one ever promised this life would be simple. Certainly not easy. [His voice is quiet, not chastising, just reflective. He pats the horse's nose again in farewell] But I'm here should you need someone to help you shoulder the burden.

[slays]

Thank you. [ That gets a smile out of her. But it falls and she looks temporarily confused. ] I -- Should we -- Do we hug now? Is this a hugging thing?

[chessing]

[wat he is too British for this. he will just... put an arm around her shoulder instead, so it counts as a half-hug without all that bodily contact] I have no doubt that you'll excel, Buffy.

[slays]

[ She looks absolutely dwarfed and childlike as soon as his arm goes around her shoulder, and she briefly leans against him, looking up with that pitiful face. ] You really think so?

[chessing]

I'm certain of it. [He'll give her a little squeeze and a reassuring British smile and then draw away] Would you like to walk back, or did you wish to stay here on your own?

[slay]

I think I'll stick around. Do some wandering. Make with the meaningful clearing of my head, you know. Prepare myself. [ She backs off. ] Thanks.

[dragonsclaw]

Good luck with all that. [He manages to make it sound sincere, not cheeky, and bows his head politely.] We'll speak soon. And I'm always a phone call away. [And he turns towards the exit, leaving Buffy in the smelly stables. The horse beside her whickers. It's very picturesque.]
