[ As missions go, it's pretty straightforward. A week ago, a large, creepy looking castle materialized on a cliffside above a small town in Portugal, and the locals are too freaked to go check it out. No one's gone in or out, and theoretically it could just be empty. But seeing as how it probably came from the Shadow World, it could also house artifacts that the Knights should get their hands on before evil doers do. So it's their job to scope it out, maybe loot the place of the good stuff, and make sure no threats are hiding there.

Val'drin surveys the place with hands on his hips from the gate. ]

I believe the phrase is a 'fixer upper'.

[Thoster is already finding this humorous.]

I like that wager, but I wouldn't count Val'drin out just yet, friend.

[Thoster removes his morningstar and looks among his companions.]

I doubt we'll find ourselves invited in. No time to waste, hm?

[ fred rattles the gate, which is, of course, locked and barred. ] Welp. Thwarted. Might as well pack it up and go home.

[Wade tilts his head thoughtfully.] I have grenades...

[Guess who's more prepared? Hint: it's the tiny Asian lady who's pulling lockpicks out of her messenger bag.] I don't think there's any need to announce our presence to everybody within a ten-mile radius.

Look at you, little bit!

[No one said Thoster was the most respectful adventurer.]

More prepared than any of us.

[It's okay, he's a bard, he can get away with it. Sort of.

...he's still less annoying than Deadpool?

Anyway, she's got to be able to do something useful at some point in this dungeon crawl. She gives Thoster a tight smile, then leans in to examine the lock more closely. One pick goes in, then two, and a third as she shifts them around carefully, concentrating as she gets the tumblers in line. (Disable device check: 22)]

[ and the old lock clatters open, the gates creaking apart with no more preamble. ]

Speak for yourself. Perhaps I just wanted to give the lady a chance to show off her skills. [ meanwhile, fred pushes the gate open wider, taking a few steps aside. there's a long walk up to the front of the castle, and a few grotesque statues dot the lawn, covered in undergrowth. ]

[Thoster strides onto the grounds, taking his time to get a good look around. BARDIC KNOWLEDGE CHECK, THE FIRST (15 total) to see if he knows anything worth knowing about those statues.]

[ technically, they're just gargoyles, which would imply that they're there to scare away evil spirits. either that or as a morbid reminder of evil intended to scare people into behaving by religious standards.

specifically, though, several of them seem to be representations of gnomes that fit with tales of the race as a cast out race that stemmed from humanity: a dismal spin on the creation tale. ]

Grenades would have been more fun.

[Maybe he'll be able to blow something else up later, though. He walks through the gate, one hand on the pummel of his gun as he looks around, just waiting for something to pop up.]

Not to mention an exercise in subtlety. [ val'drin stays in the middle of the group, as they head up the walk. a few barren trees dot the landscape as well, and the branches of one suddenly explode with several crows taking flight. ]

[Thoster will file that information about gnomes away until it proves useful. No sense showing all his cards just yet, right?

He walks up and claps a hand to Deadpool's shoulder.]

Fear not. I'm sure we'll find good use for all of your toys.

[He turns his head sharply as the crows burst from the tree, then surveys the area to see just what caused the disturbance... but apparently gets distracted by something shiny because he rolled a 3 for a spot check.]

[Chiaki thinks about casting a spell to detect magic, just in case the statues aren't what they seem, but she chalks that up to full moon-related paranoia. Or something like that. She starts at the noise of the crows, almost ready to cast her only a combat spell at them. No need to fry the crows, wolfgirl.]

Well, they've certainly got the atmosphere down.

[Not that she has any idea who 'they' are.]

I dunno, I think the soundtrack could use some work. [ not seeming overly interested in scoping out the lawn, he takes the steps two at a time, examining the ponderous wooden doors, which have a grotesque head for a knocker. ] Should we?

I hardly think it looks like anyone's home. But if you'd like... by all means!

[Deadpool's still bitter about the lack of explosions.] If we're just gonna announce our presence like that why even bother with the sneaky approach?

I'm personally a fan of the sneaky approach. Perhaps there's a back door.

I don't see why we would knock. Are we going to follow that up with 'Hello, sir, we're here to steal your precious magical artefacts?' It's hardly as if we're about to get invited in for tea.

[Thoster takes a step back from the group and leans towards Deadpool and mutters] Y'might want to get those toys of yours out, friend.

[After that, he'll straighten up and calmly walk back towards the rest of the group. Except in the next moment, he's flashing a grin and rushing the door, kicking it in (Str check 21)- because really, guys... it's a big abandoned house and there are six of them. Even if they got sneaky on the way in, there's no way they'd get all the way through undetected. And that's only if there's something there to detect them!]

[Oh this is a way more fun plan. Deadpool yanks a pin out of a grenade and tosses it in through the door (ranged atk 20?) just in case there's something waiting to ambush them.]

BANG!

[He looks over at Thoster.] I hope you don't die second.

make a reflex save (dc 15)

because the moment those words come out of deadpool's mouth, the porch collapses out from under them, as it fall open to reveal a chute that leads down into blackness. as fred jr. will find out firsthand because he was just standing there laughing at thoster and deadpool one moment, and then vanishes the next. ]

[ whereas val'drin jumps nimbly backwards onto the stairs with ease, and then leans over to look down the hole at whichever of you all fall down there. yeah, he's not gonna try to catch any of you. fuck that. ]

Damn.

[Chiaki jumps out of the way as well - she's equally uninterested in helping anybody else out right now. They're the ones chucking grenades about, after all. :|]

Brilliant.

[Morgan's been keeping to himself at the back of the group this whole time ~~because Pat's an idiot and forgot to tag this~~. Oh, he's also lucky enough to scramble backwards just in time and avoid falling down the hole.]

Suddenly knocking doesn't seem like such a bad idea.

[Thoster's shitty Reflex save (I rolled a 1 guys. No joke.) makes sense. He just kicked a door in. He's not exactly great with the balancing.

So down he goes. With Fred. Sorry, bro.]
