The "afterparty" is rumored to be the real main event of the night. A black-tie affair in the lavish, opulent ballroom, it is every new Knight's chance to mingle and meet some of their new brothers in arms. Of course, a couple hours are provided following the ceremony for everyone to change, do hair and makeup, and choose from the vast array of formal attire in the closets of the balcony "dressing rooms" located at the top of spiraled staircases on either side of the ballroom. A separate dressing room exists for men and women, and they include full bathrooms (with, thankfully, very modern plumbing).

The squires are usually among the last to arrive, and the ballroom is full to the brim with a fancy array of people, of all shapes, sizes and species.

Hope you aren't shy. They're all here to meet you.

Feel free to make your own open threads for people to come congratulate your newly pledged knight.

Oh no! Not at all, actually. I was sort of just... curious about the history. The inspiration for all this.

It certainly doesn't seem to fit into the rest of this world.

Well, er, historically, yes. I meant more... now. It's a bit archaic, wearing armor in this world. Waving swords about.

Well, no argument there, but I think that's why they call it art instead of a training video.

But it's still an important part of the culture here. Why do you think we put the armor on every time someone new comes along?

Well, sure. But, so's Thanksgiving, but you don't see us thanking some god that our crops didn't freeze all winter. Traditions stick around, but we adapt them to suit our needs now.

[ blank stare ] Thanksgiving?

Yeah. You know. Turkey, stuffing. It just happened, like two months ago. [ beat ] Forget it. American thing.

Sorry. I still haven't picked up on all the customs of the lands of this world.

[ he straightens his shoulders before announcing: ] Aurelius. [ after another beat, he proffers a hand, in what is obviously a very last-second attempt at appearing more professional ] And, no, I'm afraid I've found myself somewhat... dislocated as well. You're from Faerun?

[ she takes the hand to shake it just to make him feel better about his professionalism, though she honestly doesn't curr. ]

Storybrooke, actually. Is Faerun a name I should recognize?

Well, it does seem to be the home dimension of choice for arrivals here. I've never heard of Storybrooke, so I don't imagine I can hold it against you.

It's not too different from here. Little place in Maine, just not ... this Maine. [ it sounds insane, and emma's expression makes it obvious she thinks so too. she shakes her head to dismiss it. ] Who's from Faerun? Is that the, uh, the Shadow World?

Maine. [ he repeats that with no sense of recognition so obviously he hasn't been brushing up on geography here yet ]

Er, yes. That's what they call it here. Rather a dismissive naming choice, however. I can't say I very much approve.

Uh - Cross the ocean from here. [ she says 'cross' like the 'uh' was supposed to be the 'a.' regardless, it's all dismissive of the notion. it obviously doesn't mean much to him. ] I take it you're from there, too?

[ he nods ] I am. I confess I find it... difficult to accept that there is no returning.

I don't blame you. Probably plenty of people who've wasted their lives here trying to find a way back, not able to let go. Almost makes me wonder if maybe the more you forget, the luckier you are.

[ his face hardens instantly ] I can't accept that. Our memories are our identity. They're everything we've worked to be.

Or everything we didn't choose and just got saddled with.

Well, even in those cases, how we chose to deal with them impacted our identity.

But most people who are those cases [ she hates that word for it, because it's all too ... foster care ] wouldn't ne hard-up about losing that impact.

Well, if you ask me, that seems a very immature reaction to the situation. [ no asked you. also he pronounces it im-ma-TOUR, because he's that guy ]

Well, that's one opinion.
