Months ago, Finnick learned from Burt Becksworth about a number of construction projects Chad had contracted on the building. At the time of discovering the occult room, it was assumed the construction was to create the secret areas behind the auditorium, however, Kat's finally managed to hack into NOVA financial records and trace the contracts down.

It seems there was another, much more expensive, project, adding restructuring to the locked off basement level, to which there is no access through the public elevators. Schematics show that there is one accessible elevator shaft that goes to the lobby, which requires a key to activate the lower floor. Thomas considers it a better bet, however, to use the nearby quarry underground entrance through which construction trucks used to reach the site. Thomas will be leading a team through the underground tunnel in hopes of finding a space large enough to host the 'experiments' that Chad and company were afraid of the Knights discovering while nosing around the building.

Meanwhile, Jack wishes to discover if there are any remaining 'relics' in the building, and if so, to confiscate or document them. The heightened security within the building has made access much more problematic, and its taken awhile for him to acquire the security protocols necessary to be able to create a looped camera feed. Now that's everything's in place, he'll be infiltrating the building to override the cams, allowing Buffy, Elena, and Rafael to join him on the fourteenth floor for one last sweep of the occult room.

The situation has also grown more complicated in other ways since eavesdropping on Chad's cabal. In a gutsy move, Burt Becksworth has created an inescapable situation for Rafael and Finnick, forcing them to comply in preparing for an album and tour, lest they destroy their own reputations and become infamous in the business for backing out of their 'contracts' and letting down legion of NOVA fans. Finnick is an ideal situation to try and discover more about Burt's plans, however, and perhaps to find out incidental information concerning Chad's "Back the Fans" tour.

[ ok yep definitely hurrying out that door now that rafael DREW ATTENTION TO THEM JFC YOU DUMB BITCH. she shoves him out a little roughly, and then follows after. whatever jack's doing seems to be working, because anderson's doing more talking than attacking. ]

[ all three of them will make it out the door at this point, since anderson's busy regenerating... the back of his head. raf nods to the elevator ]

[She sees the elevator, makes a quick glance to try and make sure that neither Buffy for Rafael will hit the ground if she lets go before she speaks.]

I'll be right back.

[And then she books it for the elevator and hits the down button a couple more times than is necessary. The sooner it gets there the better.

Then she moves to help hold them up again while they wait, her heart pounding in her chest.]

Thanks. [ the words come out quickly as they move for the elevator. she glances over her shoulder, strained as she tries to spot jack through the wall. unsuccessfully, obviously. ] Did he tell you the plan?

I do not know how well a 'plan' will hold against such a man. [ rafael keeps an eye back on the wall as well as the elevator indicator slooowly climbs towards them ]

Jack knows what he's doing. [ buffy's answer is sharp and defensive. no. she doesn't want to imagine a scenario where jack's in over his head. she needs him. ]

I don't think there's much of a plan. He told me he was going to...stall him while I got you out of the auditorium.

[She looks a little grim, and definitely worried.]

That's it.

Let us hope he has no interest in killing him, then. [ implying otherwise jack gon' die. DING. elevator door opens and rafael gestures for them to get in ]

[ buffy hesitates at the threshold of the elevator. she glances back down to towards the auditorium. stalling is a great plan, if it works. it's a great plan, if jack is still able to follow them out. everything inside of her screams not to leave him behind, but what can any of them do against the terminator priest?

nobody has beaten her that quickly that badly. nobody. and if she's being honest with herself, she's ... well, terrified, though she doesn't show it.

but she can't leave him. ]

[And Elena feels exactly the same way, but if they stay? They'll die. They can only hope that Jack will get away after enough time has passed, that he'll follow them.

Because otherwise, if the worst does happen? It'll be for nothing.

Elena sees Buffy stall at the entrance to the elevator and look back. And Elena does the only thing she can.

She reaches out, grabs her wrist, and tries to tug her into the elevator before it closes, the adrenaline pumping through her veins fueling her. (Str 17)]

[ it's enough, considering rafael also steps in after her, and hits the door close button hard ]

We must respect the choice he has made, in any case.

[ buffy doesn't expect the move on elena's part, so she's easily pulled into the elevator. she turns around wildly afterward, breaking elena's grip with ease (str 23), but the doors have already shut courtesy of rafael's button pressing. she steps forward and rests her hands against the metal. ]

That choice could kill him. You saw what that guy's capable of.

And if we stayed, then he's in just as much danger, and we would die too.

[Buffy and Raf were already very injured. She wished she had Myri's ability to heal at this moment. Then she could at least be useful.]

I don't want to leave either, Buffy.

[But her tone indicates that they have to. Going back now would only be suicide.]

[ the elevator go down the hooooole ]

None of us do. If anyone should have stayed... [ IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN MEEEEEE ]

If you'd stayed, you wouldn't have been able to explain what the hell that was all about. [ she turns around at that, giving him a very sudden and hard stare. she's rapidly running out of patience for your mysteriousness when it keeps biting everyone in the ass, rafael. her expression is expectant, waiting for him to explain just what the hell he did that pissed the priest off so much. ] He's with the Catholic Church, right? And their demon hunter arm. [ how to not call iscariot escargot at a moment of seriousness 101. ] So, what's a guy like that want with you?

[ his dart to elena, and he hesitates before saying: ] Revenge. For one of his Church, who was killed. [ another beat ] By me.

[Yeah, she's backing Buffy up on this one. She doesn't know what the hell is going on, but she trusts her more than someone who blatantly admits to killing someone.]

Why did you do that?

[It better be a good reason.]

[ he glances up towards the cameras, obviously really hoping that jack was right about them all being on loop in the elevator ]

Buffy knows this, and some of the Knights. In Italia, I work with a Resistance Movement, that protects Shadowkind from the oppression they face there. We arm and fight to defend those who cannot defend themselves.

That is how the priest died, but that is not how the Church sees it, I would hazard to guess.

[ she looks at elena to weigh their opinions against one another, unapologetically excluding rafael from it with just her body language. considering she isn't sure how much to trust him anymore, she doesn't really feel it's out of line. ]

Wouldn't be the first time organized religion got their minority oppression on.

[ her ability to rationalize the conflict speaks to the truth of rafael's statement - yes, she knows, yes, he's a resistance fighter helping shadowkind. he wouldn't just murder a priest.

she thinks. ]

And most likely not the last. But those circumstances were unusual and extreme. Things in Italia get much more ... dangerous than they do here, for Shadowkind.

[Elena's not sure she likes the vagueness of his answer, but they really don't have time for it in the immediate future. They can talk about it more once they've finished escaping.

Besides, she's worried about Jack.]

[Her eyes are glued on the numbers counting down to the bottom floor.]

What was he doing? The priest you killed. How was he hurting Shadowkind? And, better question slash follow-up, how the hell was that one stronger than me? [ it's not arrogance, it's bafflement. buffy's strength isn't exactly a secret, and it's not lack of modesty that leads her to draw attention to it - just honesty. ]

[ his eyes narrow a bit as he looks at buffy ] The Catholic Church has done some experimenting of its own, if rumors are to be believed. They have agents who are ... enhanced scientifically. [ he shakes his head ] The priest who was killed was part of an Iscariot underground attempt to destroy a network of growing Shadow churches that they considered dangerous, because of their "pagan" nature and the growing magical power of their clerics. He was part of an operation that involved dragging away church leaders in the middle of the night to kill or "interrogate" in their own cruel ways. [ his voice is hard, clearly unforgiving and unrepentant ] In Italia, the Inquisition lives on, fully prepared to do what it feels is their divine duty, of rooting out heretics and devils.

I'm assuming we mean theoretical devils here.

[Because based on what she's seen, they might be real.]

And now the one upstairs is on some kind of personal vendetta mission? [If she's following correctly. And assuming he's still upstairs. If they're lucky, he's dead and Jack is catching up with them somehow.] He picked a really bad time to show up.

[Meaning in the middle of a mission, though she wouldn't have wanted to run into him on a good day.]

I've seen devils. [ she just personally assumes he means demons. ] Personally, I'm beginning to think people are worse. [ AT LEAST DEMONS JUST TRY TO KILL YOU. plus being bitter and cynical about that keeps her from thinking that maybe if anderson's been enhanced scientifically, that's what's going on with her. ] Do you know him, or is he just a lackey?
