[That's both reassuring and a little intimidating. But Elena knows her motives aren't bad, so she has nothing to fear in that regard.]

I guess he wouldn't be in his position if he wasn't a good judge of character.

Well, he certainly wouldn't have held it for so long.

What's he like? I mean, based on what little I've heard so far, I have a picture in my head, but I have no idea if I'm even close.

[ he seems to ponder the question a moment ] Many people comment on how ... inhuman he can seem - it's partly the dragon blood, which flows rather strongly in his ancestry - but more than that, he sees maintaining a professional distance and dignity to be the best way to manage an organization of this scope, I believe.

He's a very honorable figure, but not without a merciful streak. However, he has no sympathy for the truly evil in this world. There's definitely something much more Shadow about his mentality, but it doesn't make it outdated in our modern world, either.

[The idea of dragons, actual dragons, it something that Elena finds hard to entirely wrap her head around. She mentally wonders if the inhuman thing is a physical or behavioral thing.]

So he actively tries not to...get too close to people?

[It...makes sense, if she's only thinking about it with her head.]

So he's had to adjust, just like the rest of us.

Oh, yes, certainly. More than others, perhaps, given that when he arrived, Shadowkind were still viewed as myths or superstitions in many quarters of the world. I imagine some of the distancing might have come from necessity, in those days.

But it's also to allow him to maintain a clear head. He asks the same of Thomas and I, though to a much lesser degree.

It's probably easier for him to do that if he's back running things all the time. I think it would be hard to distance yourself too much if you're in the thick of it with us all the time.

[Then again, her only exposure to the knights was being on a mission. Maybe things were calmer than she thought, but based on what she's heard? She doubts it.]

Not to mention that we started out precisely as you are now: squires in this organization. It's difficult to sever those bonds one builds over time.

Getting thrown into near death situations with people tends to do that. Over that length of time? I think something like that would be impossible.

[A beat.]

You haven't been a Knight for almost a century too, have you?

Certainly not. I can barely boast over a decade.

That still seems like a long time from where I'm standing, though.

I suppose it might, at that. I didn't even know how long I intended to serve with the Knights when I was first recruited. I don't think I meant to make a career out of it, but it turned out to be everything I was searching for.

I hope it can become that for me, too.
