[ The castle serves several meals a day in the dining hall, provided by non-Knight Shadowkind staff, and it's usually pretty impressive fare. Today's, however, has been on the mediocre side, and while Amrita's eating, she'd see the dark haired woman who'd been staring at her at the ceremony, just a few seats down, picking at it. She looks up, and then double takes, smiling slightly. ]

Good to know lunch wasn't a complete bust. I've been meaning to track you down. Amrita, isn't it?

Consider me an expert. I may not have a hundred years under my belt like some of our Knights, but I did grow up here.

Really?

[ That is both a comment on Tia growing up in the castle and the existence of people who are hundreds of years old.

She's feeling very naive right now. ]

I've been in this country [ And this world, ] for so long, and there's still so much I don't know about. It feels like I should.

The world's a complicated place, and everyone brings their own experience to the table. The knights are unique in that we bring so many different walks of life together... so there's no better place to break outside your comfort zone. Believe me.

Yeah, I'm still sort of trying to wrap my head around how I'm ever going to make myself useful.

[telekinection]

You'll find your place here. Not everyone needs to be a strong arm: in fact we've got plenty of them. Sometimes it's a cool head, a compassionate touch, or an unusual expertise that makes you useful.

It's an astonishing place. I've already gotten quite wrapped up in the notion of hybrid species of humans and reptiles.

[ She lets out an embarrassed little laugh. ]

Just ask sir Koraith.

I guess he would be an expert on the subject.

He was very patient with me, I'm afraid I went into full nerd mode on the poor guy.

[telekinection]

He's been around a very long time. I'm sure if there's anything he's used to, it's dealing with... questions.

Probably, but I felt bad anyway.

So you grew up here? Did you sort of... always figure you'd end up being a knight?

[telekinection]

[ her smile flickers a bit ] That was... sort of everyone's expectation.

My father - and his father before him - were the two Dragon's Claws that predated Jack Chessing.

[ Huh. ]

I don't want to step on any toes, so just tell me to back off if it's too personal but... what did you want?

[telekinect]

No, it's... fine. I wanted - or thought I wanted to be a teacher.

So much so that I left. Quit the Knights and ran off to do it.

Really? Wow.

I can see you being good at that, actually. What sort of teacher? I mean what age group and subjects did you teach?

[telekinection]

Kindergarten, so any and all subjects, really. I suppose I had an unfair advantage. Most people only have to joke about their teacher being a mind reader.

... You're not joking.

Does it bother you?

That you could read my mind? A little bit, but it's not like you can really help it if you were born with that ability, right?

[ She shrugs and smiles a little. ]

I try to say what I think most of the time anyway.

[ she gives a grateful smile ] I try not to go digging, if it makes you feel better. Some people just think louder than others.
