I put them somewhere in her mind where she can't get to them.

You messed with her mind? And she let you? That was what she wanted?

[finnick sounds horribly offended about the whole thing. so much mind mutilation going on around him ... and he can't believe katniss would willingly subject herself to something like that. then again, it's not like he even knows katniss that well anymore. whoever this new katniss is, without all their memories of home. ]

[ she looks away, watching the water swaying back and forth gently in the pool as she says softly: ] You have to understand that Katniss witnessed a terrible event on her mission, that seemed to have triggered some kind of deep emotional scarring. She was hardly functional. She couldn't make sense of it. Some sort of PTSD, but without the scaffolding of her previous life experience to sort it out and deal with it.

She wanted to be able to continue her work with us, and it seemed the best way.

[he closes his eyes and draws in a sigh. getting mad about it wouldn't make it better. it was hypocritical of him, anyway. to be envious of katniss and haymitch forgetting and then be mad because one of them willingly subjected to it. katniss would do whatever she wanted to do.]

She went through a lot back home.

[and wasn't that an understatement.]

I got that impression. Doing what I did... I had to see and experience what she did. I only got pieces. That's all that's left, shreds of memories.

[ a little hesitance and then she asks: ] Do you know? What happened to her?

[he doesn't want to share, because he doesn't feel like it's his place. but, then, it's not like it matters to her anymore.]

Where we're from, there's this ... ritual. The land is split up into different districts, and ruled over by the Capitol. Once, 75 years ago, the districts tried to rebel and failed. The Capitol's way of punishing them was to create an event where, every year, two children would be taken from each district and placed in an area. It's a deathmatch, essentially. Only one can come out alive. ... She volunteered in place of her sister last year.

[telekinect]

[ all the color drains from her face as this sinks in ] A death match with children? That's... that's barbaric.

[he doesn't comment on the nature of the thing either way, and just keeps going in a removed tone.] The Capitol loves it. They broadcast the whole thing on television. The audience can participate by sponsoring their tribute of choice. The money they put forward for the tributes allows different supplies to be dropped into the arena for them.

[ she looks ready to be sick to her stomach and has to look away ] How long has this been going on?

Well, I came here around the end of the 75th. Which was a year ago, so ...

[he doesn't want to believe it kept going, not after everything he, katniss, and the other victors had worked towards in the arena, but how can he know for sure? all things considered, the revolution probably didn't stand much of a chance without its mockingjay.]

And no one could stand up to it?

Not without losing everything they loved for it.

And sometimes I think this world is bad.

Hopefully you helped her in some way. ... I haven't really talked with her recently.

She's still adjusting. It seemed wisest for her to take some time off from ... work, after what she went through.

As long as she's all right now.

It's something of a journey... but she's making it.
