There's nothing sinister whatsoever about Oak Street, as Christos steers the rented van onto the street and parks against a curb. Well watered and neatly trimmed lawns frame cheerful suburban houses, a paper boy rides past on a bike, a couple strolls by hand in hand eating dripping ice cream cones. Down the block, children are visible hooting and whooping as they swing from monkey bars on a small playground while mothers wait on benches and chat politely, happy to soak up the sun and get off their feet for a moment.

Christos frowns heavily through the window, as if the sight of all this contentedness is more unwelcome than an army of invading monsters would have been.

Solace speaks up first, from his place in the front passenger seat. "It may be prudent to split our group to cover more ground. At least one of the homes should be re-examined, and we ought to ask some of the locals for their take on the situation." He unbuckles his belt. "I mean to investigate the area for evil auras."

Christos nods, turning off the engine. "The sun will be down in an hour. I'll scout around the houses for access points. No point in breaking in before then."

A great evil has taken root in this dwelling, and it is our responsibility to eliminate it. These creatures are undead, with all that encompasses.

I can smite most of them myself, but we'll need to search the house to discover how they came to be here, lest this continue once we have gone.

[She flashes Miles a look, eyebrow arching.]

Can't stay out of trouble, can you? [Which is funny, coming from her. But she turns her attention to Solace and shrugs.]

Okay, so get with the smiting already.

[He says with a sideways grin. Because they'd had a conversation about trouble and danger, hadn't they.]

Smiting, eh? Can't wait to see that.

I'll go in back. [ and he doesn't wait for any of you fuckers to volunteer to join him because he hates you.

[And then he hurries off after Christos.]

Miles! [ she calls out before she can stop herself, but he's already gone. and she looks frustrated and one hand clenches and unclenches but then she's back in the game. ] They're expecting us. So be ready. [ to faye: ] Did you bring a weapon?

Just these. [She holds up her hands, as if her magic is even remotely reliable.]

You might not want to get your hands on these things.

I didn't really plan on touching them. Plus our good friend tall, bald, and boring over there said he could smite most of them

And no she doesn't care if Solace can hear her.]

[ a stern disapproving look from baldy for you, faye. but then he's marching past y'all up the steps. ] Your job will be to pick off the rest.

[Miles turns to look over his shoulder as he hears his name, but he's already lost line of sight with Jaina. The two girls should be safe with Solace, is his thinking. Christos may not give a damn about him, but better he than them.

He hopefully catches up to the guy before he barges inside or whatever he's gonna do.]

Is there a plan?

[ christos reaches up to check the windows as they pass along the back of the house. each is locked. ] You're the one who's been inside and got the layout. Perhaps you have one to suggest.

I managed to see a whole two rooms of the house before we got jumped. So 'got the layout' isn't really true.

Then it seems making any sort of plan would be a futile gesture, doesn't it? [ there's an implied dumbass in there somewhere. he reaches the back door and yanks out a lockpick. ]

[Faye is going to follow, because she kind of wants to see what smiting looks like, honestly. She tosses a look to Jaina.]

So do you think they gave us the grumpiest knights on purpose or...?

Maybe Wynn was just trying to find the ones who'd be able to off little kids without flinching.

[She snorts a laugh at that.]

You might be onto something there.

[The grumpy squire just snorts at the comments and keeps his eyes on the house. Someone is still sulking about getting caught having a literal cat-fight in the middle of the mission.]

[ solace pushes the door open and in they go... the dust covered furniture looks entirely still, and there's no sign of any homicidal skull children anywhere. but he raises a palm and a burst of light appears, illuminating every corner. ] Stay on your guard.

[Faye follows with just as much enthusiasm as everyone else here today. This is seriously the most disgruntled mission group ever.]

Pretty sure no one's home.

That's what we thought last time, and then they surrounded us.

[Miles keeps watch as Christos starts picking the lock, his eyes moving to look inside any nearby windows as well. Apparently incredibly poorly. (Spot Check Crit Fail Oops)]
