feast & after-party ♔ empty my heart | i've got to make room for this feeling

♬ Can't Take It In - Imogen Heap
WHO || Wynn, the new Squires, any and all Knights
WHAT || Squiring Ceremony Feast & Afterparty
WHERE || Knights Headquarters, the Dining Hall & Ballroom
WHEN || February 9th, 2012, 7:00PM / 9:00 PM
HOW || Prose OR Actionspam
While every dinner served in the Knights' exceptionally large Dining Hall manages to have a sense of occasion, given the sheer quantity of food necessary to serve the hundreds who take their meals there, the 'feast' Wynn's ordered for after this squiring party outdoes the norm. It's not a problem to produce so much food at the drop of the hat when mages can magically summon up entire banquets, and so the room teems over with the smells and spices of hundreds of unique dishes. Centerpieces built with peacock feathers and sweet smelling flowers dot the table at intervals. A silver cage in the very middle of the table includes several live birds, their feet and tufts each appearing to be silver as well. A banner hangs from the top of the cage, with the Knight's symbol of a black dragon on a silver field.
The food has a distinctly medieval flair to it today, which several of the older Shadowkind Knights express their boisterous appreciation for as they dive in. The first course consists of a civet of hare, a quarter of salted stag, a stuffed chicken and a loin of veal, the latter two covered with a German sauce with gilt sugar-plums and pomegranate seeds. At each end of the table is an enormous pie, surmounted with smaller pies, which form a crown. The crust of the large ones is silvered all round and gilt at the top; each contains a whole roe-deer, a gosling, three capons, six chickens, ten pigeons, and one young rabbit. Serving as seasoning or stuffing, a minced loin of veal, two pounds of fat, and twenty-six hard-boiled eggs, covered with saffron and flavoured with cloves.
A second course follows: aroe-deer, a pig, a sturgeon cooked in parsley and vinegar, and covered with powdered ginger; a kid, two goslings, twelve chickens, as many pigeons, six young rabbits, two herons, a leveret, a fat capon stuffed, four chickens covered with yolks of eggs and sprinkled with spiced powder de Duc, and even a wild boar.
Next came wafers and stars; a jelly, part white and part blue. A fourth course of cream with Duc powder, covered with fennel seeds preserved in sugar; a white cream, cheese in slices, and strawberries; and, lastly, plums stewed in rose-water.
Besides these four courses, there's a fifth, entirely composed of wines, and of preserves, which consist of fruits and various sweet pastries in the shapes of dragons.
---------------------------
Following this, assuming anyone is still capable of moving at all is the after-party: a black-tie affair in the lavish, opulent ballroom, every new Knight's chance to mingle and meet some of their new brothers in arms. Per usual, a couple hours are provided following the feast for everyone to change, do hair and makeup, and choose from the vast array of formal attire in the closets of the balcony "dressing rooms" located at the top of spiraled staircases on either side of the ballroom. A separate dressing room exists for men and women, and they include full bathrooms (with, thankfully, very modern plumbing).
The squires are usually among the last to arrive, and the ballroom is full to the brim with a fancy array of people, of all shapes, sizes and species.
Hope none of you are shy. They're all here to meet you.
All open feast threads should be made under the FEAST heading below. Any other threads below will be for the after-party. Feel free to make your own open threads for people to come congratulate your newly pledged knight.

Just try not to take it personally. Lan's an ass. And as you could see, no one jumped to his defense. [She continues to use diplomatic persuasion throughout her little speech, trying to offer Buffy a little comfort. It really wasn't all that out of the ordinary. And it was fucking hilarious.]
You certainly gave Thomas a chance to shine. [And then her smile turns to more of a reminiscing look of fondness as she stares out at the crowd.]

Okay. Rebooting. ]
He's a Dragon's Claw?
no subject
[As she just remembers Buffy's connection to Jack Chessing:] He's very different from our other Dragon's Claw, but that's usually how it goes. Creates some sort of balance. And Thomas has been a Dragon's claw for several decades now, and a Knight for much longer than that. He's quite capable.
Once you get to know him, it won't seem so strange.

The Dragon's Claws are our more tangible leaders, as Wynn is not always present, even around the castle. We've just seen a lot of him this last week because of all the ceremonies. [Eye-roll.] Otherwise, we work on a chain-of-command system, with our section leaders and the Dragon's Claws relaying orders and messages. [She realizes she's kind of gone off on a lecture, so she tries to get to the point.
She makes an obvious sweep of the room.] It takes a very talented and strong person to lead an organization of such size and diversity. To make all sorts of different people get along for the sake of the cause.
Like I said, tonight's events were not that out of the ordinary. [And she offers her a kind smile.]

But, I did kinda fail the whole getting along part. Which means making Jack and Thomas' lives just a little harder. [ The guilty tone makes it clear that that's not something she wanted. ]

Besides, when you live in close quarters with the same people for long periods of time, there's no way you're all going to get along and agree on everything. This castle has probably seen more drama than any other building in England, and that's saying a lot.

So, she just gives a bright smile, one that is a critfail worth of convincing that she's reassured and nods promptly. ]
I-I know. Can't get along with everyone, we all want the same thing, blah blah blah. I'm sure as soon as I have training stuff to distract me, it'll be way better. Acres of improvement better.

She's a people-reader. Empathetic to a fault. It's her job to discern and understand people's emotions and reactions. She's done it for so long now that it's impossible for her not to do it, even in simple social situations.
So she'll make a diplomacy check of 33 to come across as concerned rather than nosy. /epic manipulation] But you don't really feel as if you'll ever actually fit in here, do you?
no subject
What? No! No. Like you said, I just need time. I'm sure ... given enough, I'm bound to ... [ Her smile deflates a little and she stops trying because her lie is just ... not even a little convincing. ] continue to stick out like a sore thumb until Judgment Day.
[ Your diplomacy check has her opening up some. ] I just -- I feel like ... like I'm never gonna get over this weirdness. How am I supposed to connect to anyone when I don't even know anything about me because the Veil just ripped it away? It just ... Sometimes, it feels like ... If I can barely remember anything, maybe I'm barely a person at all.

[Pausing for answer and dramatic effect...]
Just because you've lost your memories doesn't mean you've lost yourself. You still have your instincts and your feelings. You may not remember why you hold on to what you do, but that sense of personality is still there. And I think we've all seen just how much personality you have. [She jokes lightly, before she goes back to serious business.]
And now you have a fresh start. You can be whoever you want to be. It's completely up to you. And trust me, I know how daunting of a thought even that can be. But the point is, you can't go back and your memories won't return. So now you can dwell on questions that will never be answered, or forge ahead and decide who you are and who you want to be.
[After that emotional crescendo she tones it down a little.] We're very accepting here. I hope you come to realize that first-hand.

There's a kind of choked chuckle at the joke, unavoidably watery sounding. Then, finally, when Francesca's done, she gives a nod. ]
Is it weird to say that I don't miss the memories? [ She shakes her head. ] Everyone seems to want to remember their life, but I ... I just miss being me. [ But, she swallows back the feelings and manages a forced smile. ] Guess I'll just have to keep working on figuring out who that is.

[She looks back out at the room to give Buffy a little privacy.] Sir Lanston remembers much of his life before he came here, including the family he left behind. And because he has that to cling to, he refuses to move forward and accept this world for what it is.
[She pauses before turning back to Buffy.] You'll discover who you are all over again, and be all the better for it. You'll have the confidence of knowing that you chose to be this person, and you'll fight for the right to be yourself. Most people don't have that assurance.
