feast & after-party ♔ empty my heart | i've got to make room for this feeling

Can't Take It In - Imogen Heap

WHO || Wynn, the new Squires, any and all Knights
WHAT || Squiring Ceremony Feast & Afterparty
WHERE || Knights Headquarters, the Dining Hall & Ballroom
WHEN || February 9th, 2012, 7:00PM / 9:00 PM
HOW || Prose OR Actionspam

While every dinner served in the Knights' exceptionally large Dining Hall manages to have a sense of occasion, given the sheer quantity of food necessary to serve the hundreds who take their meals there, the 'feast' Wynn's ordered for after this squiring party outdoes the norm. It's not a problem to produce so much food at the drop of the hat when mages can magically summon up entire banquets, and so the room teems over with the smells and spices of hundreds of unique dishes. Centerpieces built with peacock feathers and sweet smelling flowers dot the table at intervals. A silver cage in the very middle of the table includes several live birds, their feet and tufts each appearing to be silver as well. A banner hangs from the top of the cage, with the Knight's symbol of a black dragon on a silver field.

The food has a distinctly medieval flair to it today, which several of the older Shadowkind Knights express their boisterous appreciation for as they dive in. The first course consists of a civet of hare, a quarter of salted stag, a stuffed chicken and a loin of veal, the latter two covered with a German sauce with gilt sugar-plums and pomegranate seeds. At each end of the table is an enormous pie, surmounted with smaller pies, which form a crown. The crust of the large ones is silvered all round and gilt at the top; each contains a whole roe-deer, a gosling, three capons, six chickens, ten pigeons, and one young rabbit. Serving as seasoning or stuffing, a minced loin of veal, two pounds of fat, and twenty-six hard-boiled eggs, covered with saffron and flavoured with cloves.

A second course follows: aroe-deer, a pig, a sturgeon cooked in parsley and vinegar, and covered with powdered ginger; a kid, two goslings, twelve chickens, as many pigeons, six young rabbits, two herons, a leveret, a fat capon stuffed, four chickens covered with yolks of eggs and sprinkled with spiced powder de Duc, and even a wild boar.

Next came wafers and stars; a jelly, part white and part blue. A fourth course of cream with Duc powder, covered with fennel seeds preserved in sugar; a white cream, cheese in slices, and strawberries; and, lastly, plums stewed in rose-water.

Besides these four courses, there's a fifth, entirely composed of wines, and of preserves, which consist of fruits and various sweet pastries in the shapes of dragons.

---------------------------

Following this, assuming anyone is still capable of moving at all is the after-party:
a black-tie affair in the lavish, opulent ballroom, every new Knight's chance to mingle and meet some of their new brothers in arms. Per usual, a couple hours are provided following the feast for everyone to change, do hair and makeup, and choose from the vast array of formal attire in the closets of the balcony "dressing rooms" located at the top of spiraled staircases on either side of the ballroom. A separate dressing room exists for men and women, and they include full bathrooms (with, thankfully, very modern plumbing).

The squires are usually among the last to arrive, and the ballroom is full to the brim with a fancy array of people, of all shapes, sizes and species.

Hope none of you are shy. They're all here to meet you.

All open feast threads should be made under the FEAST heading below. Any other threads below will be for the after-party. Feel free to make your own open threads for people to come congratulate your newly pledged knight.

You'd be surprised. [She says with an amused smirk.] Plus, you made most peoples' night. In a good way, I promise. [She gives her a reassuring smile - Diplomacy check 26.] It was a pretty tense night to begin with, so everyone was a little on edge, Lan included.

Just try not to take it personally. Lan's an ass. And as you could see, no one jumped to his defense. [She continues to use diplomatic persuasion throughout her little speech, trying to offer Buffy a little comfort. It really wasn't all that out of the ordinary. And it was fucking hilarious.]

You certainly gave Thomas a chance to shine. [And then her smile turns to more of a reminiscing look of fondness as she stares out at the crowd.]

Thomas ... That's Sir Dances on Tables? [ She follows Francesca's gaze, feeling pretty convincingly reassured by the remarks. She had a point -- no one was exactly defending Lan, just trying to stop him from starting a fight and intervening from Buffy agreeing to finish it with ... well, singing and dancing. Still. It felt weird -- a part of her still expected to be scolded any minute now. ]

[Francesca laughs at the nickname.] Yes. Sir Thomas Bancroft, the Dragon's Claw. He's been out of town since you've all arrived, so I'm sure he very much enjoyed making such a grand introduction to all the new squires.

[ Long pause. Disbelief is happening. Her brain will boot back up shortly, but for now she's blue screen of death.

Okay. Rebooting.
]

He's a Dragon's Claw?

[She chuckles, very used to this reaction, I'm sure.] I think it was uncanny ability to diffuse volatile situations that won him the job.

[As she just remembers Buffy's connection to Jack Chessing:] He's very different from our other Dragon's Claw, but that's usually how it goes. Creates some sort of balance. And Thomas has been a Dragon's claw for several decades now, and a Knight for much longer than that. He's quite capable.

Once you get to know him, it won't seem so strange.

Guess I just kinda figured you had to be all straight-laced and Jack-like to be one. [ She purses her lips in thought, but shrugs it off. ] Guess I should be glad he takes the Whiskey in a Jar approach to diplomacy. They're supposed to be pretty strong, right?

[personal profile] socialgraces 2012-02-15 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
The Dragon's Claws? Yes, quite strong. Usually. You're lucky to be Jack Chessing's squire. [She says it in an encouraging, not chastising, way.]

The Dragon's Claws are our more tangible leaders, as Wynn is not always present, even around the castle. We've just seen a lot of him this last week because of all the ceremonies. [Eye-roll.] Otherwise, we work on a chain-of-command system, with our section leaders and the Dragon's Claws relaying orders and messages. [She realizes she's kind of gone off on a lecture, so she tries to get to the point.

She makes an obvious sweep of the room.]
It takes a very talented and strong person to lead an organization of such size and diversity. To make all sorts of different people get along for the sake of the cause.

Like I said, tonight's events were not that out of the ordinary. [And she offers her a kind smile.]

[ It's okay, Buffy appreciates the lecture. She seems pretty attentive and interested on the whole, because it's just short enough to stay informative without losing her in tl;dr. Or ... tl;dl, I suppose. ]

But, I did kinda fail the whole getting along part. Which means making Jack and Thomas' lives just a little harder. [ The guilty tone makes it clear that that's not something she wanted. ]

[She gives her a sympathetic look] I know exactly how hard it is to try to fit in here. And it's even harder when you have nothing else to focus on but getting along and being useful. I've been there. And so have most of the other people in this organization.

Besides, when you live in close quarters with the same people for long periods of time, there's no way you're all going to get along and agree on everything. This castle has probably seen more drama than any other building in England, and that's saying a lot.

[ Most people probably aren't dealing with freaky nightmare-induced insomnia and amnesia on top of the transition. That was what she wanted to argue. But, she knows better. Wynn told her not to mention the veil-y status and her own personal nightmares are so beyond not afterparty conversation.

So, she just gives a bright smile, one that is a critfail worth of convincing that she's reassured and nods promptly.
]

I-I know. Can't get along with everyone, we all want the same thing, blah blah blah. I'm sure as soon as I have training stuff to distract me, it'll be way better. Acres of improvement better.

[personal profile] socialgraces 2012-02-17 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
[Francesca's forehead creases at Buffy's obvious facade.] Yes, loads better. [She offers distractedly.

She's a people-reader. Empathetic to a fault. It's her job to discern and understand people's emotions and reactions. She's done it for so long now that it's impossible for her not to do it, even in simple social situations.

So she'll make a diplomacy check of 33 to come across as concerned rather than nosy. /epic manipulation]
But you don't really feel as if you'll ever actually fit in here, do you?
slays: (Default)

[personal profile] slays 2012-02-17 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
[ The crit fail of her bluff is carrying over into this tag because it's really hard to appropriately crit fail a faked smile okay. ]

What? No! No. Like you said, I just need time. I'm sure ... given enough, I'm bound to ... [ Her smile deflates a little and she stops trying because her lie is just ... not even a little convincing. ] continue to stick out like a sore thumb until Judgment Day.

[ Your diplomacy check has her opening up some. ] I just -- I feel like ... like I'm never gonna get over this weirdness. How am I supposed to connect to anyone when I don't even know anything about me because the Veil just ripped it away? It just ... Sometimes, it feels like ... If I can barely remember anything, maybe I'm barely a person at all.
socialgraces: (injustice)

[personal profile] socialgraces 2012-02-17 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
[She gives Buffy a sympathetic look. It's void of pity, but full of gut-wrenching sadness. She quickly attempts to replace it with optimism but it doesn't quite reach her eyes.] Can I share some advice with you? It's something someone told me when I first came here. After the Veil had taken everything away from me as well.

[Pausing for answer and dramatic effect...]

Just because you've lost your memories doesn't mean you've lost yourself. You still have your instincts and your feelings. You may not remember why you hold on to what you do, but that sense of personality is still there. And I think we've all seen just how much personality you have. [She jokes lightly, before she goes back to serious business.]

And now you have a fresh start. You can be whoever you want to be. It's completely up to you. And trust me, I know how daunting of a thought even that can be. But the point is, you can't go back and your memories won't return. So now you can dwell on questions that will never be answered, or forge ahead and decide who you are and who you want to be.

[After that emotional crescendo she tones it down a little.] We're very accepting here. I hope you come to realize that first-hand.

[ Buffy manages to rein in the emotions in her expression for the most part. The instinctual response is pretty much raining on her face and breakdown, but they're in public, at a dance no less, and she barely knows Francesca. So, she swallows it back, the tight line she's drawn her lips into trembling, her eyes brimming as they widen to keep the tears from falling down.

There's a kind of choked chuckle at the joke, unavoidably watery sounding. Then, finally, when Francesca's done, she gives a nod.
]

Is it weird to say that I don't miss the memories? [ She shakes her head. ] Everyone seems to want to remember their life, but I ... I just miss being me. [ But, she swallows back the feelings and manages a forced smile. ] Guess I'll just have to keep working on figuring out who that is.
socialgraces: (I'm listening)

[personal profile] socialgraces 2012-02-17 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
I don't miss mine either. I've heard more times than I can count that it's a blessing not to be haunted by memories of my past. I try to look at it like that.

[She looks back out at the room to give Buffy a little privacy.] Sir Lanston remembers much of his life before he came here, including the family he left behind. And because he has that to cling to, he refuses to move forward and accept this world for what it is.

[She pauses before turning back to Buffy.] You'll discover who you are all over again, and be all the better for it. You'll have the confidence of knowing that you chose to be this person, and you'll fight for the right to be yourself. Most people don't have that assurance.

[personal profile] slays 2012-02-18 07:59 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you. [ She nods, reaching up to wipe the last traces of wetness from her eyes and giving a soft mirthless chuckle at herself. ] God, look at me. It's supposed to be a party, and I'm -- [ She takes a deep breath, centers herself, and she's okay again, smiling even -- more convincingly, now. ] Thank you.
socialgraces: (observant)

[personal profile] socialgraces 2012-02-18 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Anytime. [She pauses, giving her an understanding smile.] I am sorry. I suppose this wasn't an ideal setting for such a conversation. [And she looks kind of guilty for making the other woman express such emotion in public. Luckily, she doesn't think anyone's paying attention to them.]
slays: (Default)

[personal profile] slays 2012-02-19 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Not exactly, no. [ She at least seems dryly amused by that fact. Particularly because no one seems to be paying attention, so she probably got off easy. ]
socialgraces: (fondness)

[personal profile] socialgraces 2012-02-19 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
[Her face relaxes as Buffy's emotions calm. Her tone is more casual now, but it doesn't seem harsh or forced.] Well, now that that's settled, why don't you go enjoy yourself. I'm sure there's more than a few people who would love to buy you a drink.
slay: ats (1.08) (Default)

[personal profile] slay 2012-02-19 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, as long as they're buying ... [ She smiles and gives a nod. ] I think I'll do that. Thanks again -- for, you know. [ She gives a nod, her pride refusing to let her further admit anything that just went on. Then, she makes a strategic escape. ]
