Lis'sa meets the squires inside the laboratory, behind its "Biohazard" labelled doors. She doesn't really offer much of a greeting, or even introduce herself - just waits inside the strange multi-storied library section until everyone is gathered, and then instructs them to follow her up the steps.  A great deal of models are suspended from the ceiling that look like space age designs for jet planes, cars, boats, and any number of other things. There are other objects that are much more inexplicable: a giant silver ball, suspended by several rods, for example.

There's another set of doors at the end of the balcony, and she swipes an access card through a reader besides them. They depress with a space age his. revealing a clean white laboratory, with rows and rows of tables and lab equipment set up. Numerous knights buzz around in white lab coats, working under microscopes and on computers, conferring over a number of projects.

"This way," she instructs simply, not sparing the lab a second glance, heading for a door on the left hand side of the room.  She presses a hand against the panel there, and the red light changes to green, unlocking the door for everyone's access.

Beyond is a very long room, with rows of labelled cases and cabinets with transparent glass revealing what's inside.  Lis'sa steps crisply to the other side of the large stainless steel table.

Credit Cards

[Seven envelopes lie on the table already, and she spreads them out for everyone to claim the one bearing their name, as she explains.]

Each envelope contains a card in your name that can be used to pay for any mission related expenditures. Our financial department tracks expenses, so you're asked not to make unnecessary purchases, but hotel rooms, air fare, meals, equipment not provided by this lab, and so on can all be covered. [Each card is silver, with this logo branded on it, and the words KARTHUR INSTITUTE across the top]

You'll receive a monthly stipend for your work here as well, that should cover any personal necessities.

[Riddick picks the card up slowly, eyes hidden behind his welders goggles. He taps it against his hand slowly, then places it in his front pocket with a deft movement. Not only would his mission necessary expenses be paid for, but he'd be getting a check out of it all too? That was a helluva lot more than he was expecting.

He says nothing as they follow Lis'sa to the next piece of equipment. Guns. That made him grin.]

[She hadn't ever heard of a credit card before now, so she just stares at hers, wondering how something so small and meaningless could have any value at all.]

It's only a piece of plastic.

[She muses, turning the card this way and that and holding it up to the light to examine it. It serves as an interesting reminder that she's not from this world at all.]

[piratitude]

[Whatever plastic is, even. To which effect, Andrea is even more lost.

She flicks the card with her finger and an utterly perplexed look on her face]

Right. How's there supposed to be money on this?

[lissatrinall]

The money isn't tangible. It stores information electronically [She takes the card out of Andrea's hand and shows the black bar on the back] right along this strip. You can think of it as magic, if you must. [She sounds like the idea of thinking of it that way is offensive to her entire life, but easier than explaining it to you backwards people] When you use the card, you could imagine it as someone else pays for your purchases, and then the Knights later repay them.

So as with a bond.

[ Arthur prefers not to think of things as magic, but signatory debt he's fairly familiar with. ]

[lissatrinall]

[Oh thank god, someone who catches on quick. She gives him an almost appreciative glance, but just for a moment] A similar concept, yes.

[Katniss can't remember ever having money. Probably because even back home, she didn't ever have any. Life is really hard in District Twelve, okay, not that she knows this.

So the concept is still strange to her, but she slowly nods and pockets her card, making note to do research and try it out later so she can figure it all out on her own.

She glances over at Arthur, and then to Andrea.]

It can't be that difficult to figure out.

[And with that statement of what was supposed to be optimism (too bad it falls totally flat), she turns and walks off to find a nice wall to lean up against.]

[Yeah, that kind of sounded like an insult to her, and she glares daggers at Katniss' back as she turns away]

[king]

[ Not just to Andrea, either. ]

Sir Sweetheart strikes again.

[ He murmurs as he looks over at Katniss gone to be anti-social, and back to Andrea. ]

Have you ever had an IOU? You give someone the card that is exclusive to you, they use it to note that they're giving you something of a certain value, and later they can trade that proof for money.

[ He gets the impression it's a bit more complicated than that because technology, but hopefully it helps. ]

[piratitude]

[She arches a brow at him and smiles, nodding a bit]

Right. Merchants writs. Use them all the time for larger purchases like building supplies and the like.

[king]

Precisely.

[ A beat, and then: ]

Building supplies?

[ She doesn't exactly look like a construction worker. ]

[piratitude]

[Hey...she's stronger than she looks]

Mmmm. Timber, pitch, nails...that sort of thing. Not uncommon to have to rebuild whole parts of the ship after a confrontation.

[king]

You're a sailor!

[spymaster]

[Oh wasn't this interesting. Picking up the envelope and taking the card out he turns it over, examining it, interested to some extent to just get the feel of it.

This seems pretty normal to him and he pulls out his wallet to tuck it away in there for the moment. At least they were well looked after for things.]

[servant]

Does yours have your name on it too?

[Merlin seems inordinately delighted by that. But he has a little trouble fathoming anything beyond that...like how this card will pay for things, especially when it'll be given right back to him.]

[spymaster]

[He turns his card over, holding it out for Merlin to see that yes, James Watson is written on the front of it, smiling.]

Indeed it does, why do you ask?

[servant]

[Merlin looks at it, then back to his own, smile never fading.]

It's just nice. I don't recall ever having my name on anything before.

[spymaster]

[And James's smile doesn't leave either, but he does tilt his head at that.]

Really? And how did that happen? If I may ask of course.

[servant]

I guess there was just no need for it. Only kings and nobles and that sort need their names on things.

[spymaster]

That is true, if you come from a place like that. Though not every place, sees such things, the same way, as I am certain you have come to see yes?

[servant]

Yeah.

[Merlin smiles at that.]

Well, still learning, really. But I think I could get used to it.

[spymaster]

With time, I do think you will. [He smiles at him, extending a hand.] James Watson.

[servant]

I'm Merlin. [He shakes his hand, grinning and pointing to the card after he lets go.] See? Proof.

[spymaster]

[That gets a laugh out of him before he smiles pleasantly.] I will take your word for it, over that piece of plastic. Names can be forged, and it would do you well to remember that here.
