[ some mentor knights like to give their squires a little space before contacting them to begin training - after all, the castle's huge, there's a lot to explore, and just getting the feel of the place down can take months. jimmy's knight is one of these, so it takes a couple of weeks before he asks jimmy to come meet him in the dragon's hoard lab: easily recognizable by the big 'biohazard' labelled doors in the main hallway. entering reveals a multi-storied library, smaller than the castle library but full of strange models suspended from the ceilings, etc.

kadir sits at a table on the balcony, reading away. it'll take a spot check roll of 15 or higher to notice him up there... ]

Don't worry, you're not the only one. I'd never held a gun until I came here, and you should have seen my face when they told me they expected me to use one.

But things can get hairy out there, and it's better to be prepared just in case. If that's where you feel weakest, it's where you should train first.

[beseeched]

I've never held a gun. I can see how that'd be jarring, yeah.

[He's been shot by one though. He doesn't want to mention it.]

So... How do I go about training?

[demolitionman]

There's a whole wing for it upstairs, and always someone on hand to help you find something suitable. You're on your own schedule with it, so whenever you want to make time.

[beseeched]

Thanks. There's not a lot to do here so I might go up there and check the place out tomorrow.

[demolitionman]

[ he laughs ] Oh, there's plenty to do here. Always someone willing to teach any and every skill you might be looking to expand on, and plenty of recreation opportunities as well.

[beseeched]

Lucky me. Limitless possibilities.

[demolitionman]

Don't sound so enthused.

[beseeched]

It's not that I'm not interested. I'm just not sure where to begin. I mean- Look at me. I'm not really what you'd expect to see on the battlefield.

[demolitionman]

Well, hopefully, you won't be on one most of the time. We're not all about fighting wars, after all.

[beseeched]

So is this all the guidance I get? Is there anything you think I should know as a new recruit?

[demolitionman]

You get as much as you want. This is just Day One of orientation.

But fine, do you want to hear about missions generally run?

[beseeched]

I'll try not to monopolize your time.

But sure, why not, I'm all ears.

[demolitionman]

Wynn's the one who sorts out who's going on what mission: he usually tries to vary up people by skill, so there's generally at least one member of every relevant Section along for the ride, depending on the nature of the beast. You'll get an alert on your company phone as to when the mission briefing is, and expected to show up on time to the Round Table room to meet your teammates and hear all the particulars.

Wynn's not big on giving direct orders as to how a mission should be completed - he sort of lets us put our heads together and figure it out, in most cases. But there's always a leader, who gets the final say.

[beseeched]

Wynn seems like a nice guy.

[Jimmy also got the feeling he had the potential to be a real smartass.]

Okay, and since I'm still green I'm probably not going to get selected any time soon?

[He'd prefer to have some time to learn a little more than fisticuffs when it came to combat.]

[demolitionman]

Probably not. At least for nothing that dangerous. And if they send you out, you'll be in the company of several senior Knights - or me. Whether that's a comfort or not.

[beseeched]

Don't get me wrong. I'm not scared. Just apprehensive, and I don't want an error on my part to screw anything up in the field.

[demolitionman]

Hey, we've all been there.

[beseeched]

At least I'm not alone.

[demolitionman]

Not in the least.

We operate in secret, so you'll be expected to try to keep a lid on the whole Knights of the Silver Dragon deal while out in the public eye. Luckily, Wynn's got a lot of strings in high places to pull, so we get a little leeway.

[beseeched]

I figured the whole thing was kept under wraps. Otherwise someone would've heard about it and went public.

[demolitionman]

Governments are in the know - it's how we have some much freedom of movement. And half the time, they're the ones hiring us.

[beseeched]

Makes sense. So it's a conspiracy.

[That last part is a joke. His smile gives him away, but it's obvious he finds this whole thing very interesting.]

[demolitionman]

I'm sure to some people it might actually be. [ he chuckles ] But so far no one's tried to do a documentary to the effect.

[beseeched]

Lucky us.

[He has to bet the secret would be much harder kept with some conspiracy theorists on their tails.]

Thanks for meeting with me. I should stop monopolizing your time. I'll do what I can to find some training for my lack of fighting experience.
