When Rose and I were at St. Vladimir's there was a Strigoi attack. It was... bad. There were a lot of them, many more than anyone imagined.

[His entire demeanor seems to switch gears in an instant, the very mention of a Strigoi attack making his muscles taught and ready for action, as if they're about to be attacked themselves.
It's an instinctual reaction, one he's assumed kept him alive long enough to bear the tattoo on his neck, the ones he and Rose share.]
How is that possible? There should have been wards in place to keep them away.
[A beat as he calms himself.]

You were tutoring Rose -- her mentor, so to speak. The wards had been weakened, enough that some of the students were taken. [She knows she doesn't need to explain how much of a blow that was or how bad.] You and Rose and the other Guardians went after them, they called in more Guardians from nearby I think. Some of it is fuzzy, but it was a massive force.
They, you, saved everyone. [Finally she looks up, wide green eyes apologetic, and reaches out to tentatively cover one of his strong hands with her own delicate hand.] Except you.

Perhaps that was something they would just have to keep to themselves.
It was also rare that they'd stage a counter-attack of their own, but what she says next simply confused him, and it shows in the way his eyebrows furrow, accompanied by a frown.]
This happened in the past, though. If I were killed in battle, how could I then be here?
[Dying while fighting Strigoi was something he didn't find as surprising as he should. It was how a lot of them died. It was their job to die before the Moroi they were guarding. It was the rest that truly bothered him.]

[Chewing on her bottom lip, she looked at him worriedly, waiting for him to understand so she wouldn't have to say it.]

[She glances down at their hands, forehead wrinkling slightly as if she expects to see burns on her wrists, but they've healed. Or have been healed? Details.] That is why you're here, Rose saved you.
[Lissa can easily dismiss her own part in it, it didn't matter that she held the stake, Rose found the way to do it.]

[He's astounded really, though he supposed her explanation makes sense. Spirit users, with their ability to heal, to bring back the dead. Why was Strigoi restoration such a stretch after all of that.]

[And its a near impossible picture to imagine: willowy and delicate Lissa overpowering enormous and trained Dimitri in order to stake him.]

[This is most certainly a surreal conversation. He's suddenly and truly believing that some memories should be forgotten. He can only imagine what he might have done, and what he could imagine was terrible enough, let alone having the true memories of doing it.]

You'll both be fine, I promise. Just take it a day at a time. If she can read your mind, perhaps you can try to show her some of the memories you still have. Maybe that will help.
