[ something seems to have shifted a bit in his demeanor and he shrugs, a part of him appearing to have shut down ] I don't know the whole string of 'em. Just the ones from this century, basically.

Is that... Are you saying that Benjamin Franklin was a knight?

Not just a Knight. [ he gives a knowing glance up the row of those whose life story he'd been relating. ]

Wow. [Somehow that is more impressive to Lissa than the other stories, probably because she knows Franklin from history class and she can put those lessons toward imagining him with the knights.] I'm having difficulty deciding if l think he was in the Dragon's Hoard or the Dragon's Tongue.

The former. The only Dragon's Hoard member to ascend to Dragon's Claw, so far.

Guy did spend a lot of time in Europe playing 'ambassador' when he wasn't schmoozing up the ladies.

I guess him and Wynn were pretty good pals. As much as Wynn ever has pals. I kinda would have liked to see that.

Imagine having had met him, what would you even say?

Well, we're in luck. Far as I know, he was human, and actually is dead, not Shadowkind in hiding.

See, somehow that doesn't seem very lucky to me. [She glances at the painting wistfully.] Maybe all I want in the world is Ben Franklin to call me pretty. All my dreams are dashed.

Well, he'd be dumb not to. If he weren't dead, I mean.

[Lissa smiles, well, grins, at the painting, before she gets ahold of herself and looks back at Max, just regular smiling.]

[Her head cants to the side a little, studying him. She's never been good at reading auras -- Rose's always looked warm and inviting to her even though she knew it was filled with shadows because of her magic. But Max is an enigma to her, she she figures she'd give it a shot, maybe the weird familiarity she felt when she looked at him would help. (Concentrate 18)]

[ as she tries to bring his aura into focus, she'd find it less of a glow and more of a smoky haze that surrounds him: the colors primarily a dark gray and sulfur hue, which reflect a pattern of dark, depressing thoughts, unclear intentions, and the presence of a dark side to his personality, as well as some kind of pain and anger. the colors overwhelm any sort of positive glow whatsoever, although he smiles at her as she stares, eyes friendly. ]

What is it?

[It reminds her of fire. Not the glow or the light because she can't find any, but the way it makes the air around it smudgy, that smell that lingers even after it's out, that pervasive danger telling you not to get too close.

She takes a step closer, blinking a little at his question as she comes back to the present and looks up at his smile, reflexively returning it. It doesn't occur to her not to tell the truth.]

Sometimes if I try hard enough, I can read people's auras. [There's an hint of apology in her tone. She should have asked, she thinks.]

[ the smile falters a bit at the word ] Auras?

[Crap. Her eyes cloud, she shouldn't have said anything.] They're colors, an energy or a life force sort of, that surround people. Like a halo, almost. Most people can't see them.

Yeah, I... know what you mean, actually. [ and he sounds none too happy about the fact. ] I guess I was just surprised you -- [ he stops ]

Whatever you see, I probably don't wanna know, huh.

If it was bad do you think I would still be standing here? [She takes another small step closer to prove a point.]

[ he backs up a step in response, automatically ] Not everybody knows what's good for them.

[lastdragomir]

Obviously. [She backs up in deference to his step back, but her smile slips slightly. That's something Rose would say, one of those aggravating things any Guardian would say, as if Lissa didn't have the intelligence to figure it out on her own.]
