The "afterparty" is rumored to be the real main event of the night. A black-tie affair in the lavish, opulent ballroom, it is every new Knight's chance to mingle and meet some of their new brothers in arms. Of course, a couple hours are provided following the ceremony for everyone to change, do hair and makeup, and choose from the vast array of formal attire in the closets of the balcony "dressing rooms" located at the top of spiraled staircases on either side of the ballroom. A separate dressing room exists for men and women, and they include full bathrooms (with, thankfully, very modern plumbing).

The squires are usually among the last to arrive, and the ballroom is full to the brim with a fancy array of people, of all shapes, sizes and species.

Hope you aren't shy. They're all here to meet you.

Feel free to make your own open threads for people to come congratulate your newly pledged knight.

ooc; also if your Knight wants to get all gussied up, you can make a Disguise (Cha) check for how good they were at hair/makeup/stylin', etc! This goes for... any time.

No need to put words in my mouth. I don't think that you take anything lightly. Just looking at you ever proves that.

[She puts a hand against her chest.]

But I, for one, would rather fight for someone that I knew than someone who was good at their job. I can't be the only one.

To know my goals, to know what my Knighthood stands for and understand why, is to know all that matters most to me.

What about before the Knights? It can't be the only thing you've ever cared about.

[She is...the most nosy.]

It isn't. But what happened then served to inform what I have built here. To that end, those things live on.

[ and he looks over at her, the nostalgic air gone ] And this was not always my world. Many things I once valued were placed outside my reach long ago.

[Everyone she's talked to that came through the Veil has forgotten pretty much everything they used to know before coming here.]

[ he nods to her first comment ]

I remember all my life here, and much of it before. Enough to know what was left behind.

[ a thoughtful pause ] They call it the gift of Lethe, the forgetting. It's a gift, because it keeps one from dwelling on what is hypothetically forever outside one's reach.

Sounds like a case of the grass is greener on the other side. Do you wish you'd forgotten?

[She's pretty sure she'd rather have memories, even if they suck.]

[ he shakes his head ] The knowledge I brought with me from that world has only left me more capable of assisting those who share my plight here. I have never found regret to be a particularly fruitful emotion.

[She nods in agreement.]

Kind of puts a damper on the whole 'gift' idea, doesn't it? But you're right, neither have I.

[That's why she tries to do what she thinks is right so she doesn't have to feel regret later. She can't see the future or the past, so dealing with the now and going with her gut is the best she's got.]

There are still those for whom it is a gift. Who would be crippled by the memories of their old life, unable to release them, or find purpose here.

Working through grief is a part of life. It's what makes us who we are. I can tell you right now I know for a fact that there's no way my life was perfect, but I'm sure I left something behind. It happens all the time. Tragedy and death are a part of life, and so is separation. If you can't move past that and do something with your life even when you get handed a bad hand?

[She shrugs her shoulders, not answering her own question.]

Our lives in this world are certain to bring their own tragedies.

[She gives him a sideways smile, shaking her head.]

How optimistic.

Realistic. I've lived long enough to know that no man escapes sorrow in his time - but also to know that that itself is hardly cause to despair. Out of our difficulties, we learn who we truly are.

Exactly why your Gift of Lethe is no gift.

[Because without her memories, she knows even less about herself, and that's worse than the anything that could be in her memories instead.]

But I shouldn't be taking it out on you, so I'm sorry. It's just frustrating.

There is little reason to call it my Gift. It is a universal constant, put in place by the gods or some other great power for purposes we can only speculate upon. It affects you as much as it does I.

[She waves that thought away.]

Right. Nevermind. You get my point.

[She huffs out a breath.]

You know, I never bought that. Destiny or greater purpose or whatever.

Call it what you will. The idea doesn't take away our free will in accepting or denying it.

[Her lips turn up into an amused grin.]

You really do have an answer for everything, don't you.

It comes with having lived long enough to have been faced with most questions many a time.

Well, considering you don't look old enough to even be my age, is it rude to ask how long you have lived?

That depends on how you mean.

It wasn't always a Knightly Order in the manner it is now. It wasn't until after the turn of the first millennium that it ceased to be an organized underground effort under the guise of a monastic order.

That group had its root in, oh... 580 A.D.? Give or take.
