The trial of Rafael Giovanni looms on the horizon, as summer gives way to fall, the chill in the air creating a definite atmosphere of foreboding as the date grows closer. It's not merely Rafael's freedom on the line after all - but also Des', thanks to the deal he struck with Iscariot. While Francesca and Val'drin work to uncover the secret of the mysterious hourglass artifact, lawyer Jaka Teken'Duis uses his ... unique legal powers to work towards a "Temporary Insanity" case for Rafael. The Knights, unhappy about the potential ramifications of such a plea, continue to seek any evidence they can to show Rafael was actually innocent, and place conspiracy charges back on Chad Becksworth and his ilk for what transpired. Not everything they learn, however, is what they were hoping to find...

Others wage more personal battles, as the coming autumn signals the encroaching winter, and Luthir and Violet's time draws shorter to find a way to stop her nightmares, lest they kill her. Elena plays a dangerous game, working to uncover more of her nature by training her doppelganger powers - with the enemy.

This log covers any work and non-work related shenanigans the Knights have while staying in Chicago, immediately following the three mission logs and continuing for four months. This will be the Knight's last time in Chicago before the trial: after which they plan to return to the castle to fully Knight Violet and Dawn and decide where to head next.

Make your own threads, don't fuss about tag order, feel free to threadjack multiple people into one thread for hang-outs, ask me if you want a certain scene with an NPC, etc. forever whatever. There will be a few group scenes, which I'll alert everyone to on Plurk. They may not all be posted immediately, so keep an eye on this post for new threads as time goes by. As sappy as it is, the whole interaction has caused her to think about the first time she met Elena- poor little dear drowning in a puddle.]

[Success! The memory had her grinning pretty quickly, eyes fluttering open.]

At least I give memorable first impressions.

Of course you did. [She pulls back and brushes back Elena's hair fondly before sitting back and getting back to business.] What's it like? Seeing someone else's thoughts.

I don't really see them, I hear them. It's kind of like I'm listening in on a conversation that someone is having with themselves.

[Thus why it feels like she's intruding when she does it.]

I'm pretty sure if I tried it on Rafael, I would be hearing Italian.

Oh, that would be... confusing. I wonder if anyone here could teach you a few other languages? For all the travel we do.

It might be a good idea, for the future. At least some basics, anyway. Certain important key words.

I'm sure Gar could find you some books. She helped me with my reading when I first started on the mission.

[Elena nods. She knows that Gar would probably jump at the chance to teach her things.]

I'll ask her, see what she thinks would be the best place to start.

Good. [She smiles again, feeling pleased to have been helpful in all this.] How are otherwise? Finding all this out must have been... overwhelming.

Scary. Mostly scary.

[Because after the inital 'holy crap i'm a monster' phase came the 'people won't want to be near me' phase, which was so much worse.]

And when I get scared, I do dumb things like go off on my own to figure it out.

[It's strange just how similar they are, really.]

Did I ever tell you much about my life before I came here? There was a man who hunted me, called me a monster, a demon. I spent years running from him. It's the only way I stayed alive.

We do what we need to do in order to survive. Never apologize for that. But what I want you to remember is that you don't need to be afraid of us. Least of all, me.

[Elena's face is deadly serious, because she instantly wants to murder anyone that would ever do that to her friend.]

How could anyone ever think you were a monster?

[Seriously, wtf. One conversation would have anyone thinking differently.

But she nods, seeing the parallel here.]

I was afraid because I didn't want anyone to be afraid of me.

We only fear what we do not understand. I know why you did what you did, Elena. I know how easy it is to move without thinking because you don't think you have another option. But I would have listened. And I think you know that, deep down.

We can't change what happened. But I don't want you to ever be afraid to talk to me.

I know you would have, I don't even have to think about it.

[It had never been about listening.]

I didn't want to burden you. And I didn't want anyone to try and convince me to not see it through. Or for anyone to put themselves in danger because of me.

[Myri nods, because she understands that much of it.]

No more secrets, though? Can you promise me that?

I promise.

[She holds a hand up, just the smallest finger extended.]

I'll even pinky swear.

[That will earn Elena another bright grin. You're the best, Elena. Myri hooks her pinky around her squire's.]

[Pinky swears ftw.]

You know I love you, right? You're like...my family here.

I know. [She responds immediately.] And I love you as well, so much. I was so terrified when Wynn asked me to be your mentor, you know. I didn't know if I could do it. But now? I can't imagine it any other way.

I think you were the only one.

[Who thought she couldn't do it.]

I never doubted you for a second.

We both managed to find our way, I like to think. [She blushes a little at the compliment.]

It helped to have a squire so easy to guide.

[She reaches out, takes her hand, and gives it a gentle squeeze.]

So we're both awesome. I guess I can handle that.

[Myri squeezes back.]

Seems like a perfect match, if you ask me.
