Just like Fred said, at the top of the main staircase is the entrance to an incredibly spacious room, that has gym and weight training equipment on the wall near the door, and then lots of old school training dummies and more at the far end. A glass door enters into a firing range, and another pair of large doors on the farthest wall lead to the armory.

The room's full of the clanging of metal, as Dovan and Luthir fight, sword to axe, across the room, and Fred gathers everyone up on the gym side to explain things.

[Well, this seems pretty lame. But Spike shrugs and goes over to whack the dummy with a sword. Which he does with an attack roll of 16. I'M ASSUMING IT'S NOT THAT HARD TO HIT A DUMMY.]

[nepotism]

[Nope, it's pretty easy. Sword does a d8 of damage, which I'll just roll this time. Either way, Spike's massive strength will help out and he'll knock into the thing with a mighty THWACK that sends it spinning around on its pole. It bobs back and forth and Fred's eyebrows go up.]

Not bad. You've definitely got some kind of form down, though I'm guessing your training was uh, informal? [He doesn't say it in a way that's insulting, just curious.]

[...Spike has no clue what sort of training he's had. So he just shrugs.]

Guess I've picked bits up here and there.

[nepotism]

You wanna try it on something less stationary?

[bigbad]

[He grins.]

Sounds fun. What've you got?

[nepotism]

Me. [He smirks and moves over to heft a sword off the rack.]

[bigbad]

[Spike grins, twirling his sword in his hands.]

Now we're talking.

[nepotism]

[He moves into the center of the circle that's drawn onto the floor, and cracks his neck, looking back at Spike.] You want shields?

[bigbad]

Why? If I wanted to do blunt damage, I'd just punch you.

[...some people do this thing called defending themselves, Spike. Don't worry about it, you've got a billion hp. You'll be fine.]

[nepotism]

I meant... [Wow. Someone with a lower int score than him???]

Never mind. No shields.

[bigbad]

[He needed SOMETHING to be a dump stat, okay?

Spike grins and twirls his sword a bit as he walks to the circle.]

Sounds good. [He lifts his sword, watching the other closely. He's not entirely sure how this goes. He's pretty sure they don't actually want to skewer each other, but he's not very good at doing things halfway. So he'll follow Fred's lead on this one.]

[nepotism]

Alright. [He takes a stance, feet shoulder width apart, knees bent slightly and gestures at Spike] Don't worry about holding back on me. That's what we've got the clerics there for.

C'mon. Try and hit me.

[bigbad]

[Spike nods and lunges at him, with an attack roll of 27. It does 15 damage. Then he steps back a bit, grinning, and waiting for Fred to make his move.]

[The attack leaves a nasty looking cut on Fred, who doesn't seem to even flinch in the face of getting sliced. Instead, he responds by immediately bringing his own sword up to bear, and slamming it against Spike's with so much force that it nearly knocks it out of the vampire's hand, which is apparently what he's aiming for. Spike manages to keep a hold of it, but his arm is knocked to the side and gives Fred plenty of room to send a powerful kick straight into Spike's chest 16 dmg. The kick sends him staggering backwards, but still Spike keeps a grip on the sword.]

[Spike grunts in pain as he stumbles backwards, but he grits his teeth and takes it. Hell, he enjoys it a little bit. He knew he'd like fighting. Even getting hit. He slashes his sword at Fred again, but this time he's a bit less coordinated. He doesn't manage to land a hit.]

[nepotism]

Wait for an opening. Don't just swing at me whenever. [He can tell Spike just really, really loves hefting that sword around. He clacks his own blade once more against Spike's, to drive his point home, almost hard enough to relieve the vampire of it again] Good grip. [And then he slips past Spike and drives an elbow into his side. Hard. 8 dmg]

[Spike grunts a little and spins around, slamming his fist into the back of Fred's head for nine damage. It's possible he's getting frustrated with the sword, even if he's good at not letting go of it. Punching, though, he's good at.]

[nepotism]

[Fred stumbles half a step from the blow, cranking his head around to keep the back of his head out of Spike's reach again, for one.]

Nice arm. [He sounds generally surprised by the force of the blow. He takes another swing at Spike with the sword, whapping him with the flat of the blade on the hip 4 dmg, and then swinging wide.] But let's see you follow it up with a clean cut.

I like using my fists. [And when he follows up with a pretty big wide miss, it's clear why. Fists are just more fun.]

[nepotism]

Fists can't parry a blade. [He brings his sword up very purposefully, allowing Spike to have the time to deflect]

[bigbad]

[Spike deflects easily and attacks back. It's a 20, it hits, it does 9 damage. He smirks a bit.] Sure they can. Just hurts a bit.

[nepotism]

And wears you down a helluva lot faster than letting the blade take the brunt. [Again, he barely seems to notice the blow landing, bringing a sudden slashing cut up diagonally from left to right. Deflect this, Spike. 8| Oh. 'Cept you don't. 8 dmg]

[bigbad]

[Spike's getting annoyed now. It makes him sloppy. He growls as he makes a very obvious, very sloppy swing. He's aiming to hack at Fred's side, but his attack roll of 15 means... good luck with that.]

[nepotism]

I'm telling you: you're not gonna hit me that way. You might get in a lucky shot or two, but when you come up against anyone actually trained in a swordfight? You're gonna be screwed. [Again, he whirls his blade around, this time smacking the flat of the blade against Spike's hip. It's obvious now that he's pulling his attacks, keeping from doing any damage that's gonna last. 3 hp.]

[Spike growls impatiently and tries to see past the very minor attacks that annoy him more than a real hit would. This time he waits for a moment until he finally sees his opening, then he darts forward quickly, slashing his blade across Fred's collar bone and down his chest with an attack role of 29. It's a damn good hit. 11 damage.]
