Everybody loves a media circus and the trial of Rafael Giovanni is no exception. If he was famous before, in the days following the shooting, now he's all people are talking about, and all the tabloids want to focus on. The complications presented at some of the early hearings by Jaka, regarding the identity of the Black Scourge and Rafael's alleged reaction have only made the story more appealing to the millions watching.

They've also caused the trial to drag out for months as facts are checked, evidence is poured over, and the jury becomes only more split on the issue. In the meantime, the holidays fly by, and one of the most terrible winters in years blankets Chicago in blizzards.

This log covers any work and non-work related shenanigans the Knights have while staying in Chicago, immediately following the last log and continuing for the next couple months. This will be the Knight's last time in Chicago before the trial: after which they plan to return to the castle to fully Knight Violet and Elena and decide where to head next.

[ silence is fine with her. it means she doesn't have to pretend she's okay for someone else's sake. and that's really nice. but she's not going to be the one to break it. instead she just shifts her hand across the bed to take his. ]

[he takes her hand, and begins to feel a little better ... maybe ... but not to the point where he wants to talk about what happened last night. (spoiler: it was the thing.) so the silence will ensue for awhile longer. he also has yet to burrow under the covers, so he'll work on that now.]

[ eventually the silence breaks with: ] Titanic. [ jeopardy is on. ]

Oh hey, you got it right. [he musters a small clap for her.] I'd be awful at this game.

That's because you have a life, whereas I need to just get some cats and call it quits because I'm just prolonging defeat here.

No, it's because I come from a different world. [sigh.] What kind of cats would you get?

The feline kind? [ she knows shit about cats. ]

I was thinking about color. [so does he, okay.]

Black. I could call them my little Scourges. I'm sure no one would be personally insulted by that. [ and she also doesn't sound like she would care if they were. ]

[that is SO INAPPROPRIATE but it earns a snort of laughter from him. for the first time in a million years.] Can one have socks? I like when they have socks.

Yeah, one can have socks, just for you.

Good. [but now the laughter time is over, and he leans his head against her shoulder.] But you have a life, you know. Things are just ... awful right now. For everyone.

I know. Why do you think I hide in here. No one needs my... they don't need this on top of everything else.

I know. [he knows because he spends half of his time doing the same thing. that was his pep talk; he made his best effort.] I think — I think Myri and I may have broken up.

[ oh look, proof that her issues are superfluous. frankly, violet is not actually surprised. but she doesn't say that, choosing instead to brush a kiss against finnick's hair. ] I'm sorry.

[he shakes his head.] It was just ... too much, I guess. She didn't like who I was anymore. [it's not an accusation; he just sounds defeated. he doesn't know how to be the person she first met again.]

Do you like who you are? [ the way she says it isn't rude, she doesn't mean "well can you blame her?" but she knows that no one actually can blame myri. depression is hard to deal with when you haven't experienced it first hand, especially when you haven't experienced it to the degree that vi and finnick are struggling to get through. it's not even easy to deal with when you have had experience with it. she doesn't know how the fuck luthir has stuck by her when she can't even summon the energy to be happy to see him, almost ever. it must be horrible for anyone to deal with them, demoralizing. ]

Not really. But I don't know how to be any other way. [he releases a pent-up breath that's almost a sigh but not really.]

You don't have to be. There's nothing... it's not like you can help this. There isn't a bandaid we can put over this, we're not going to wake up one day like oh, okay, I'm done now. It's just going to suck, until it doesn't. And even then it's still going to suck. But then we can start trying to make up for how much we've pushed people away, which is... also going to suck.

[he burrows deeper under the covers with a groan — personally he can't stand how much this sucks. like he said before, it's all too much.] I was going to ask her to marry me. Not right now, just — eventually.

And you're just going to take that off the table now?

Why would she marry me if she can't stand to be around me?

Right now. You said eventually. You guys can still have that.

Maybe. [he wants to believe it, but he can't get his hopes up too high, either.]

[ that was the extent of her ability to be useful. it was a good solid effort that died after three seconds. she's just tired and while she knows where finnick is coming from, she can barely focus on her own relationship, much less someone else's. which makes trying ten times harder, to the point where it's starting to physically hurt, figuring out what she's supposed to say to finnick and myri. ] It's messy right now. Don't make rash decisions.
