Everybody loves a media circus and the trial of Rafael Giovanni is no exception. If he was famous before, in the days following the shooting, now he's all people are talking about, and all the tabloids want to focus on. The complications presented at some of the early hearings by Jaka, regarding the identity of the Black Scourge and Rafael's alleged reaction have only made the story more appealing to the millions watching.

They've also caused the trial to drag out for months as facts are checked, evidence is poured over, and the jury becomes only more split on the issue. In the meantime, the holidays fly by, and one of the most terrible winters in years blankets Chicago in blizzards.

This log covers any work and non-work related shenanigans the Knights have while staying in Chicago, immediately following the last log and continuing for the next couple months. This will be the Knight's last time in Chicago before the trial: after which they plan to return to the castle to fully Knight Violet and Elena and decide where to head next.

[ occasionally, jaka has to swing by for lawyer-y lawyer things still, and then he tends to make himself comfortable in the living room, as he's doing right now, chillaxing on the sofa with one leg crossed over the other, enjoying a cigarette inside. yep. making your hotel room smell like smoke, you're welcome.

right now, he seems distracted by something on the news, a report about the drow house baenre here in chicago... who live and work out of a gigantic building in mid-town - where they were found slaughtered this morning, in various states of mutilated and decapitated throughout its many floors. the newscaster goes on to explain that months ago, baenre was investigated by the police after they received a warrant to search their home due to evidence that suggested they were keeping dangerous Shadowkind monsters on the premises and using them as attack dogs. many of these creatures were found, along with illegal drow drugs, illicit magical artifacts and more, that sent many members of house baenre to do hard time, drastically cutting their numbers.

jaka watches all of this with the tiniest, most self-satisfied smirk ever on his face. ]

[ francesca stops short in the doorway to the kitchen behind him, a little too stunned/horrified to actually move any further, because a) she's always uncomfortable encountering him alone, and b) the news story and jaka's reaction are both quite disturbing ]

No need to lurk in the shadows, you know. [ yeah he heard you, gurl ]

[ ha ha that's a good one. anyway, watch her push down her fear like a boss (bluff 56) and stride confidently in to the room, where she'll still stand, crossing her arms coldly ] I'd call it a tragedy, but I find little need for embellishment.

Particularly given the way they targeted so many of your dear friends here, I imagine.

[ she snorts derisively at some or all of that statement, her tone still indifferent ] Yes, what a coincidence.

Perhaps it's a sign that things are looking our way.

It's wonderful when these things work out for everybody.

Such an ambitious endeavor, it'd be a pity were you not successful ... Rafael's case, that is. [ yeah not really, though ]

I've taken an interest in all angles of the case. Why wouldn't I?

It doesn't seem... strange to you, those he's chosen to ally with? [ her voice holds a certain amount of disdain, as would be appropriate when referring to non-drow ]

Desperate times yield the most desperate of measures.

The situation must be very desperate indeed.

Desperate for what? What is it exactly he wants?

I find it difficult to imagine you haven't any theories of your own.

[she arches an eyebrow, understanding the game, but willing to share, regardless ] Only speculation, but I assume the specific breed he's been targeting serves some sort of purpose, if only as a provisional measure.

Unless he has no control over who they're exploiting.

Offspring of the gods are a valuable commodity. [ he considers this, swirling his drink ] Depending on the god.

I suppose they are powerful, should they choose to embrace their heritage. Well, assuming they have a choice.

And yet, that also invites other deities into the fold, ones which might take a specific interest in his goals. [ pointed look at jaka for half a second before her face shifts back to casual, and she moves to light a cigarette of her own, as if to show she now considers this conversation worth continuing ]
