Everybody loves a media circus and the trial of Rafael Giovanni is no exception. If he was famous before, in the days following the shooting, now he's all people are talking about, and all the tabloids want to focus on. The complications presented at some of the early hearings by Jaka, regarding the identity of the Black Scourge and Rafael's alleged reaction have only made the story more appealing to the millions watching.

They've also caused the trial to drag out for months as facts are checked, evidence is poured over, and the jury becomes only more split on the issue. In the meantime, the holidays fly by, and one of the most terrible winters in years blankets Chicago in blizzards.

This log covers any work and non-work related shenanigans the Knights have while staying in Chicago, immediately following the last log and continuing for the next couple months. This will be the Knight's last time in Chicago before the trial: after which they plan to return to the castle to fully Knight Violet and Elena and decide where to head next.

[Spike's grin is all the admittance he'll give that yeah, it's pretty fun. Look, he doesn't do the eating people part of vampire and still thinks it's stupid as fuck that he can turn into animals, but being sneaky and using his super creepy vampire senses? Fun.

It's not the trial I'm talking about. [Or it sort of is. Yeah, the backhanded sneakiness was bad, and he clearly should have talked to them first so they could have pointed out that he's a dumbass. But what's worse is how badly he hurt Buffy and the other people who care about him. That's the betrayal Spike means.] Part I don't get is why. If you really don't give a bloody damn about us, why pretend to care?

[surprisingly honest considering Des's habitual shirtiness.] But you're acting like I went up on that stand to hurt you all and that couldn't be farther from from the truth.

[bigbad]

[Spike shook his head.] No. You went on that stand without giving a damn if it'd hurt us or not. That's worse. [At least if he were trying to hurt them, it would mean he cared. Somewhere inside him.]

Hurt them how? How does that hurt them, you neanderthal? [He laughs bitterly.] Because I went in for the shock? Jade is dead. The only option anyone had besides my idea was putting your faith in a bunch of shady bastards, and trust me when I say that is gonna hurt this team more than what I did. [He pokes Spike aggressively in the chest.] No one gets to judge me.

I'll judge you all I want. [DON'T TELL HIM WHAT HE CAN'T DO. He pokes Des right back.] Think I bloody care how awful your idea was? You might've saved the trial and I'd still be pissed. Wouldn't change the fact that going behind our backs wasn't bloody right. I'm beginning to see why you don't have friends.

Going behind each others' backs is about the only thing this team's good at. You wanna talk "not right," why don't you talk to your gal Buffy.

[annnd he is just over this conversation and is gonna step around Spike and try to escape.]

She's not my gal, and if this is about the Greys, at least Rafael's choice was just about him. Seeing as it probably also got your arse out of the fire without costing you anything, you should probably be thanking him.

It's not just about him. He basically gave those bastards permission to waltz into all our lives, so long as he's hanging around. Do you think that's the last deal they're gonna make? Next time it'll be Buffy. Or Elena. Or Myri. You really want those sons of bitches getting their claws on her? You saw that one guy who was all over her when Jade died.

[He takes a step back.] As for me, I just kickstarted a fight with Iscariot that was gonna happen, regardless of what I did. Rafael didn't help me. He just made sure I didn't have to go willingly.

And next time we won't take the deal. End of story. [Spike shrugs.] Yeah, I'd've liked it if they consulted us, but you're the last bloody person to call anyone out on doing things behind other people's backs.

Like I said. The worst I did was drag a dead girl through the mud.

[Every time he says that, his heart breaks a little more. Reducing Jade to "just a dead girl." But that's what she is here on earth. Everything that matters about Jade is back in the Gates of the Moon with her mother and nothing on earth can touch her now except the problems of two men she still loves.]

You're gonna find out that's not much of a crime in comparison. [He attempts to go by again.] Are we done?
