Everybody loves a media circus and the trial of Rafael Giovanni is no exception. If he was famous before, in the days following the shooting, now he's all people are talking about, and all the tabloids want to focus on. The complications presented at some of the early hearings by Jaka, regarding the identity of the Black Scourge and Rafael's alleged reaction have only made the story more appealing to the millions watching.

They've also caused the trial to drag out for months as facts are checked, evidence is poured over, and the jury becomes only more split on the issue. In the meantime, the holidays fly by, and one of the most terrible winters in years blankets Chicago in blizzards.

This log covers any work and non-work related shenanigans the Knights have while staying in Chicago, immediately following the last log and continuing for the next couple months. This will be the Knight's last time in Chicago before the trial: after which they plan to return to the castle to fully Knight Violet and Elena and decide where to head next.

[ rafael tries the window, which is closed, but unlocked ] Would he have reason to...?

To jump out the window? [ seriously? ] Even if he had reason, it wouldn't do anything to him.

[romanticidal]

He can die, carina. [ he sounds deeply disturbed now, after everything des told him and... ] Come, we should look for him.

[slay]

All right. Well, I'm not rappelling out the window. He can jump, I'll take the elevator. [ she gestures back out the door, and moves to exit the suite. ]

[romanticidal]

[ raf lingers a moment, trying to see down to the street out the window, but finally scurries after her, catching up at the elevator door ] Perhaps it is nothing, but... I would rather know, if he did something foolish.

[slay]

I'd like to call your worries unfounded, but the last time something like this happened ... [ does she need to fill in the blanks? she punches the elevator button for the ground floor. ] We found you on a bridge. [ so, yeah, not. and now that they have to wait anyway - ] What do you mean he can die? He said he was immortal!

[romanticidal]

Immortal meaning he comes back, Buffy.

[slay]

[ long silence.

she hits the door open button to stop them on whatever floor they're at and books it out of the elevator, heading for the stairs because at this point she's 100% sure she'll be quicker that way (dex 19). ]

[romanticidal]

[ with a dex of 20, raf easily keeps pace with her as they book it down the steps and out a side door into the cold air and slush of the chicago streets. distant honking echoes all around them and rafael looks up. ] Which way?

[slay]

I don't - [ where would someone go if they splatted ???? she glances around the area, hurrying towards the side of the building that has their window on it (search 17). ]

[romanticidal]

[ raf trails behind her, looking everywhere but there's nothing at all right under his window... or anywhere else around that they can see. ] I will take that as a good sign, no?

[slay]

Not quite. [ she looks back at him, shaking her head. ] Because if he didn't jump, then where is he?

You thought I jumped?

[OH LOOK IT'S DES, looking mildly perturbed that he apparently wandered up on the wrong end of this conversation. And he has a hot dog. Yes, while you're fretting, he's eating. It's the Des way.]

[romanticidal]

[ and rafael... jumps. ahahaha. at the sound of des' voice. he whirls around, brow furrowed. ] You-- How did you--?

[slay]

It made more sense than "a ghost threw my beer bottle."

[Des rolls his eyes so hard they almost vanish into his skull.] I got a visit from the Grays.

[That would sound more ominous if he didn't say it around a mouth full of hot dog. Give him a second.] I don't recommend throwing shit at them when you refuse to talk to them, either. They thought I was gonna wake the entire hotel, so they dragged me out to the park just to tell me I did something stupid at the trial.

[He finishes his hot dog.] Which is moot, considering they got what they wanted, but they don't want me emotionally damaging their merchandise, apparently.

... They teleported you?

[ she's just trying to keep up at this point because WHAT. ]

[nothingsodivine]

Yeah. [Des wipes his hands on his jeans like a classy bastard.] Not exactly First Class, either. Chalk that up to something else they do without my permission.

[He points to his head, meaning... that freaky demon-seeing whammy they put on him. STILL MAD ABOUT THAT, BTW.

He eyes Buffy steadily and then smirks, though it's more shit-eating than actually amused. A week ago she nearly punched him to death- he's allowed to be a dick at her expense.] Were you worried, Blondie?

[romanticidal]

[ rafael reaches over to lightly brush the back of buffy's arm ] We might have known they were powerful magic users, to have come at so opportune a time, and known so much of us. This is... good, is it not? That they may be powerful enough to make a difference in the trial.

[slay]

[ buffy rolls her eyes, ready to snipe at des for that question, but rafael's touch calms her. she looks over at him, and her expression steadily turns incredulous. ]

... You're just now realizing this? You broke the seal not thinking they could make a difference? [ RAFAEL WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN. ]

Whether or not that's gonna be a good thing overall remains to be seen.

[Actual lineface.]

[ LE SHRUG ] We had only their word and our belief to go on. Now we have more proof that our faith was well placed. [ except for des' insistence otherwise but look at rafael choosing to ignore that. right in front of him. ]

[slay]

Right. Our belief, and the fact that they routinely appeared out of nowhere. [ WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN, RAFAEL. ] Let's - You know what, forget it. Des is alive, the Grays are handy, we can go back to cleaning out the sty you've built for yourself. [ she turns away, because this feels like an elaborate hoax to get her to talk to des at this point and fuck no. ]

[Des sees Buffy's refusal to acknowledge him for what it is and frowns. (Wis 17)]

Are you really still pissed at me? I figured letting you break my face made us square.

[ LOOK, BUFFY, YOU JUST ACTED SURPRISED THAT THEY COULD TELEPORT PEOPLE. DON'T BLAME HIM. ]
